Kirk and Callahan: Done

Did anyone else catch the caller yesterday who was busting Gerry's chops about wearing a hat on the show and mentioned his hair plugs? Apparently Gerry's getting a hair transplant and is wearing a hat until it's complete. He even said something to the effect of when the time is right I'll announce it and mentioned a doctors name. Guess he got tired of being called the Forehead in Fatty & The Forehead.

I see "Kirk Minihane calls for someone else's firing for completely unfirable offense" has become your official gimmick, Kirk. First the kid at the Globe, then Jenny Dell, now Haggerty (who I am not a fan of either). Can't wait until you touch some third rail on the radio and have people calling for your head.

A valid criticism, but so is Minhane's take on fat Joe, "My theory on Haggerty is the same as it has been for three years -- he's lazy, not very bright, incredibly insecure with a touch of delusion. Not one of the great combinations."  Perfect, and he didn't even have to take a cheap shot at the pork-chop sideburns.

What did Haggerty do?

Has Minihane ever actually orked at a newspaper?
Did Callahan defend Haggerty in any way?  I ask because Callahan worked (works?) at newspapers and knows how this could happen. (Look up "More Mush from the Wimp"). That said, Haggerty's "I was tired" explanation suggests that *he* thinks *he* did something wrong rather than blame a breakdown in the process. Unless he's gallantly trying to spare some editor.

From what I heard this morning, Callahan made no excuses for Haggerty.  All three were making fun of him and his article, Minihane being the most vociferous of course.

As for Haggerty, he's not sparing any editors when he says that he hit send and assumed it would be edited if necessary.  Sure he's not naming names, but he's also passing the buck.  The question is whether he posted it directly to the site and hoped an editor would catch it and fix what needed fixing, or if he submitted it to an editor and they posted it as is.  In either case though, "I was tired" is a weak excuse.

You're right. I hadnt paid close enough attention and missed the "I thought someone else would get it" part.

It is a weak excuse.  He covers night games all season.  I wonder if there's a kernel of truth..."I prepared it with the placeholders and then passed out. And when I woke up I forgot it wasn't ready and hit send."

That was my first thought too (the placeholder thing).  But no one has suggested it that I've seen/heard, and Haggerty isn't offering that reasoning either.  It would make perfect sense.  I wonder if that is the case, is Haggerty afraid to reveal the "insider" secret of beat writers (that they sometimes pre-write their articles and fill in the details later)?

If Haggerty is so damn tired, what was he doing on Toucher and Rich the next morning?  Is that part of his job with CSNNE, or is he just picking up an extra $75 and/or a gift certificate to Eastern Clothing for fat dorks?  I understand that he has to be on air after the games to give us his "hot takes,"  but he should cut down on all the other crap until he learns to become a professional journalist.  As Finn pointed out, Haggerty is a shameless self-promoter.  Screw him.

Exactly eleven years ago, Bob Ryan went nuts on Joumana Kidd during a Celts-Nets playoff series.  He took full responsibility, admitting it on the fact that he had stretched himself too thin because of taking on too much auxiliary work, specifically being a regular on the, then, new ESPN show, "Around the Horn."  Ryan placed the blame on himself for not concentrating on his full-time job with the Globe.  He didn't blame his editor for not softening the tone of his column.  He didn't blame it on being too tired.  He blamed himself. He took a 30 day suspension from the Globe with a proper sense of resignation.  And, at that time, Ryan had 30 years of being an exceptional reporter/columnist in this town, and we all would have given a pass.  Compare Ryan's conduct vs that of a worthless slug like Haggerty.

ETA:  Ryan's most offensive statements toward Joumana was on Bob Lobel's Sunday Sports Extra show, where Lobel was questioning Ryan about a column he wrote critical of Ms. Kidd for attending the game at the Garden.  Ryan said something the fact that "Someone should just smack her."  Lobel offered Ryan a chance to take it back.  Ryan declined.

If he was hammered, he's a fast drinker.  He was on TV until midnight (showing no real signs of having had a few) and the original story posted around 2AM.

Not to defend Haggerty who I think is a hack but you don't see how those 2 situations are completely unrelated? Incoherent blabbering vs. going after a player's wife and saying she should be smacked? Also, he didn't appear on T&R. They were trying to call him all morning and he called in at 10 right as the show was ending. So that lends more credence to the tired theory. Again, Haggerty sucks and I can't see how that was allowed to go up but this situation is more of a joke than anything

They are hardly identical, but both lapses may have been caused by doing too much, whether work or play.  In Ryan's case it was because of over committing, and I suspect it's the case with Haggerty.  Haggs should have taken the hit immediately.  He should have just simply stated that there was no excuse for submitting a jumbled piece of crap.  Now I'm speculating on whether he was over-worked or wanted to make last call at the Hotel Bar to see if they'd serve the 13 year old girls.  Bottom line, if he's so damn tired, give him a week off and tell him to get his work approach in order so it never happens again.  Many of us have been tired and had to work under difficult deadlines.  I've submitted work that wasn't my best, but never crap like that.

I think you are overlooking something.  This wasn't "submitting crap" in the sense of what Nick Cafardo intentionally turns out on a regular basis.  This was, in all likelhood, a procedural fuckup that resulting in the submission of crap/unfinished work. Obviously just a guess, but i think there is a close-to-zero chance that what appeared in the original piece was, at any time, what Haggerty intended ultimately to appear "in print," so to speak. Ryan, OTOH, fully intended his comment to appear.

If I'm wrong, and Haggerty "thought he was being funny" or somesuch, then yeah, throw the book at him.

Both incidents were the result of carelessness brought about by fatigue, brought about, I suspect, by spreading oneself too thin... not acting responsibly on behalf of your principal employer.  After the fact, Ryan took responsibility, Haggerty tried to make a joke about it.  And Ryan had a 30 year history, while Haggs does not.  One is a grown-up, the other is a fool.

At that level of abstraction, you are correct. But at some level -- and I think this reaches that level -- such abstraction  makes analysis meaningless. There is a fundamental difference between the negligent failure to update the story/fill in the blanks/hitting 'send' without proofreading and saying -- even as a joke or just figuratively -- that the victim of a spouse's punch should get hit.

Haggerty should have handled it better, but unless he screwed up on purpose or because, for example, he was drunk, then a suspension or similar punishment is uncalled for.

I agree with your post, at least in the abstract.  Understand that when I first posted the comparison between Ryan and Haggs, I had "mis-rembered" the facts of the Ryan incident -- I thought he'd gone over the line in a column.  In fact, he had gone right up to the edge in his column (probably after work by an editor) but still had it in his craw when he sat down with Lobel.  I then looked it up "on the google," and added the correct account down below.  So the connection (why wasn't it caught by an editor) was lessened.

But there still remains a similarity, at least to me.  And that's how sports journalism has gotten so careless and screwed up the last decade or two.  A sportswriter can write for a newspaper, a web-site, blog, twitter, appear on 98.5, WEEI, Sports Tonight, NESN, etc) and they're so busy running around picking up extra money, that they don't have time to do their job, so they just work on coming up with sound-byte crap, that they don't do any reporting.  And Haggs is the #1 example in my book, and when screws up, it doesn't really matter to him.

And as for Haggerty being drunk... Sports reporters have legendary history of being drunks and don't make the kind of careless mistake Haggs made.

A lot of things, but crap like this, for starters: http://deadspin.com/5933659/the-red-sox-are-losing-because-john-lackey-likes-to-double-fist-beers-writes-moron

I love the Haggs quote, "But for whatever reason, the underachieving righty needs to travel with the team even though he won't be throwing even one measly pitch for them."

Nick Cafardo is a lazy, slob, but he never writes sh t like this. So I can just ignore Nick as harmless, but Haggs is just full-out vermin.

ETA:  In the deadspin link, notice the quote "Like John Lackey, who apparently needs to travel with the team and work with trainer Mike Reinold while recovering from Tommy John surgery – a fairly standard rehab that literally thousands of pitchers have come back from stronger-than-ever over the last 30 years."

TJ surgeries number in the low hundreds... I think like 250 over 30 years.  So either Haggs has no idea about TJ and is off by a factor of 10, OR he was trying to use exaggeration for emphasis, but is such an illiterate moron he doesn't know the idea between "literally" and "figuratively."  Moron.

Well he writes for CNNSE, a television network, so doing all of those TV spots throughout the day are part of his job. And this being a huge playoff series so this is essentially what they hire him for. They aren't going to give him time off now to rest or anything.

And I still don't understand the relation to the Bob Ryan incident. I love Ryan and could not care less about Haggerty but one personally attacked a player and his family on multiple occasions and the other wrote gibberish in the middle of the night.

I think Haggs clearly messed up, his editors or editing process failed him, and he got embarrassed nationally but it's pretty much a victimless crime. No harm no foul. Let's laugh at him and move on

Frank Jobe did more than 1000 Tommy John surgeries himself. There have been more than 250 done when you count pros and amateurs both. http://mlbreports.com/tj-surgery/

I would never call for his job or anything, but if I were his boss I'd be pretty pissed off about it.  If he was really expecting an editor to work with that copy, then effectively he was punting the article so an editor could rewrite it for him.  It's not like he had a typo or some minor non-sequitur, he had complete garbage all over the place.

The placeholder idea makes sense, but they're denying it so I'm not sure why I should think that's what it was.

Haggs referred to "literally thousands of pitchers have come back stronger than ever."  Not all of the names in your link were pitchers (i.e. Carl Crawford) and the reference also has to be to pros or top amateurs to know if they "came back stronger than ever."  Then again I may not know what Haggs was referring to.  I've misplaced my "Moron to English" dictionary.

WEEI kept it up.  I was listening to the tail end of Mutt and Merloni and they had DJ Bean on the show to talk Bruins, and they asked him about Haggerty.  Quietly ripped him a new one, mentioning that no other reporting holds him in very high regard, and I think dropped Bradford's name as one of those in accord.  Also touched on the fabricated Chara quote.... the one about courage.  A newspaper reporter making up a quote would get him suspended, minimum.

That segment has yet to be posted on the WEEI site, so I couldn't give exact quotes.

I caught about 5 minutes of the show this morning, just when they first broached the Michael Sam topic.  Immediately, Callahan was bemoaning how unfair it was that Don Jones was fined and disciplined by the Dolphins for his tweet...for his "opinion".  *click*

Of course he ridiculed people who brought up the First Amendment to defend Sterling. This is different however, because Gerry is still clinging to the social acceptance of homophobia as it takes it's final breaths.

Before I checked out, I did hear him add the caveat that Jones can't and won't be arrested for what he said, so he shouldn't be disciplined. So he acknowledges the First Amendment doesn't apply, but is going to go ahead and try to apply it anyway.
