Kirk and Callahan: Done

It's so amusing to see how over the top reactionary Callahan is with every topic, not just politics. This morning he literally said that JBJ is the Red Sox best player, compared it to leaving Kevin Garnett off the Celtics opening day lineup. Safe bet he didn't know Bradley existed a month ago.

A month ago he thought Jeremy Hazelbaker was better.

That opinion was formed after watching him in the batting cages on the back fields once.  And his biggest argument for JBJ being "ready" is based on the "maturity" he showed during a 5-10 minute interview with them.  This show has a ton of weak points, but it is at its absolute worst when they get their claws into an idea and refuse to let go or back down no matter how weak or baseless their point of view might be.

100 percent this. Callahan kept talking about how you need to have Bradley "in the middle of your lineup." Apparently 8th is in the middle of the lineup now.

D&C have hired producer Chris Curtis, formerly of TSH.

John Dennis and Gerry Callahan are such agreeable chaps who aren't completely adverse to change, so I'm sure all of Mr. Curtis' suggestions are going to be heeded and used quietly and without any pushback.

Great move for Curtis.

I've probably listened to more of D&C over the past two/three months than I have the previous two/three years.

It's not that the show is any better.  I think the dynamic between Dennis and "Minifield" is immensely fascinating, though.  They've demoted Minihane to the flash booth, so Dennis can literally turn his back to him, and he leaves the room during interviews.  I can't wait to see what's next.

On an unrelated note, I've tired a bit of T&R's sports talk.  It's not good, especially when it comes to baseball.  (Which is fine, but when one show is interviewing Ken Rosenthal and JBJ, and the other show is talking with Joe Haggerty about John Lackey double fisting beers, I'll choose the former.)

This. Im with you on this 100%. When I flipped over from the sports hub this morning Dennis was mocking Minihane because he thought JBJ should start in the minors...i could handle that, in part because i enjoy the dynamic. But then the subject changed to ripping JD Drew's passion (can they let this go?). I had to change the channel. It turned me off for the rest of the morning.  WEEI has a huge opportunity to get listeners during the baseball season if the sox stay competitive. I enjoy T&R but Wallach doesn't cover up their lack of baseball knowledge.

Rich makes the show go.  When he's not there Fred sucks.  A lot of uninformed rants that are really tiring.  But I switch to D&C this morning and they're interviewing Brad Faxon..... Old white guy radio at its worst. (I say this as an old white guy). Once the B's are in the playoffs, I'll be T&R all the time.  But until then..... No place to go.

I mean, this is very weird.  They've spent the past half hour talking about all of the people who Minihane hates, and trying to bait him into talking trash about everyone on the station.

Oh, and Dino's mentioned about six times that Salk doesn't follow him on Twitter.

I'm telling you guys, D&C is MUST LISTEN radio now.  They get more spiteful each day.

Such a Catch-22 though. If one, such as I, wants to see them crash, then I can't tune in to listen to the process, lest the ratings bump keep them afloat.

Unless you are an Arbitron diary or PPM holder, you can't affect ratings one iota by listening/not listening on a radio...they can't detect when you have your radio tuned to them or TSH or any other station.

Listening online or through a mobile device is a different story, though. I imagine they can track the number of people tuned to the stream.

Though I do listen online, I was speaking a bit more abstractly than my language let on. If people are tuning in to see the train wreck, the train wreck won't happen.

This is the most compelling radio D&C has had in years. Wouldn't shock me if JD and Kirk came to blows soon.

Good point about the catch 22 though. The desperation is what makes it work. Without that we're just back to regular old "getting shit on every book by T&R" D&C

I caught about 1 minute of them this morning, long enough to hear them rip on the Drew family and complain that the only reason they'll slot Stephen Drew into the starting lineup when he's back is that they're paying him a lot of money.

"If they both made a million dollars a year, Iglesias would start".

No, but another question...does anyone know why Dennis was putting "Pls Rt" or "RT PLEASE" after every one of his twitter posts yesterday?

Because he wanted the (mis)information he was tweeting to be disseminated broadly and immediately.  And he probably wanted his twitter handle attached to it for "credit" as well.

I heard it via someone on Facebook so I offer no vouching for what was actually said.

Apparently Callahan was going on and on about how he knew the kids on the Post cover were guilty, something about their eyes and the way they looked.

Like I said, I did not hear it and while I have little respect for Callahan I don't want to go casting stones unnecessarily.

The little bit I caught of the show this morning included his talking about looking into someone's eyes, but it seemed to me that he was being a bit sarcastic.  One of Callahan's main talking points in support of JBJ opening the season on the big league roster was how he'd "looked into his eyes" during a spring training interview and saw a big league ready ball player.  It's become a bit of a running joke.  When he said the thing about looking into the guy's eyes this morning, he was also looking over at Minihane with one of those "inside joke" kind of smirks on his face.

But I also believe what I heard was them talking about the "beard guy", one of the people that had been singled out by the internet vigilante patrol.  They were mocking the internet community that was implicating him as a suspect.

They were also going nuts with the NY Post photos, but I turned it off pretty quickly when I saw they seemed to be buying into that particular witchhunt.

That is what I was thinking, but was really hoping it was not the case. Not surprising, unfortunately.

NESN studio is in watertown in the area that's locked down and NESN employees aren't allowed in, probably related to that

After listening to the WBZ feed on TSH for about 20 minutes, I turned on EEI for a few minutes to see what they had to say (I was interested in perspective) and within a minute they were taking callers. One guy from Walpole said he knows a guy who was Polish and he said there was some sort of Polish Boy Scouts who were training to take back their country from the Russians in the 80s and made the connection that these guys may be similar.

I clicked off after that so to be fair I'm not sure what kind of analysis they were offering before or after that, but they were taking this dude seriously. So from what I heard, they weren't Stern on 9/11, in other words they weren't that great.

After watching the news since 5:30 and hearing WBZ on TSH I decided to listen to my Ipod the rest of the drive in.  I didn't even give D&C a chance because I knew it would be as you typed.

I listened for 20 minutes because the radio was stil on WEEI from the game last night. Had no idea anything went down till I heard it there. Gerry's conspiracy-fueled bloodlust is really disconcerting.  Hiding the perps' nationalities because authorities "wanted" them to be white. Take #2 alive so we can torture him and find out who his friends are. Lots of "thems" and what "we" should do to "them."  It was just a matter of time before the xenophobes and false flaggers came crawling out. In the time I was there, Dennis, at least, tried to recap the actual facts that were known.

Callahan thinks that the world is one extended episode of "24". To him there is only good and bad, us and them, black and white. He is quite literally the last person that should be on the airwaves, even if it is a sixth-place station.

I listened for a few minutes.  My favorite part was when Dino kept saying, "Watertown is locked down.  So I guess that means I can't get my oil changed at LEXUS of Watertown today, huh?  Does this means LEXUS of Watertown is closed?  LEXUS of Watertown, my car dealer, is right there."

Because, you know, he owns a Lexus.  He makes a lot of money, just in case you forgot that over the past week.

Gerry is a bad guy and this is evil.  I don't care about his talents with other co-hosts.  He doesn't belong on the radio.  You owe a broader responsbility to the community in circumstances like these.

But that's their demographic, the Fox crowd.  I'm only glad that that Steve and Freddie no longer have a platform for similar nonsense in the afternoon, with a wink and nod from Ordway.

And this is what is wrong with the station. At 6-10 there's no room for callers and commentary. We get enough of that online. Last thing I wanted to hear this morning was D&C's opinion on anything. If T&R were on, I wouldn't have been happy at all either.
