No one has reported this yet besides a DET beat writer, but she says it's done:

Certainly not ready to be announced yet from NY's side:

Yep, done deal.

So...why? Doesn't seem like much of a return for a pretty solid reliever.
Yeah, definitely seems like he's selling a bit low, he just was quoted as saying there are many balls in the air, so maybe there's an accompanying move (Gardner for MLB-ready pitching?). As it is, though, all of those relievers on the 40 man roster are going to get a shot in spring training to stick, I probably should start a dedicated bullpen thread.

Again, and this is what I believe, if we really are looking for the Yankees to really contend for a championship in 2017 and beyond, selling off bullpen pieces is the smart thing to do. I could be very wrong about this in the end, I admit.
It just doesn't seem like the return is particularly interesting. Why not wait until the trade deadline?

Some thoughts on Twitter that Cashman may take those DET prospects and use them in another deal tonight. I don't think he's done with moves today.

So our pen is now Miller and Betances and scrubs, and Miller might be traded too.

If they're doing a mini blow up, maybe they can get something for Tex and let Bird play. (i can dream, can't I?)

Or maybe Shreve told them he figured it out or something.

Saw Cash on MLB a few hours ago, said "Sorry Charlie" about Bird not being in the majors next year. Then said the owners won't let him "blow it up" aka tear down and rebuild.

This seems as close as he's come unless he has something brewing.

This trade baffles me. Maybe the Yakees see something special in one of these guys, but they look like AAA rotation depth.

Wilson is replaceable, and if Lindgren is healthy he may well be better, but there just doesn't seem to be much value in this deal for the Yanks, especially with the crazy prices relievers are getting in FA

I thought this was an interesting insight to a head-scratching trade:

Mark Feinsand ‏@FeinsandNYDN 18m18 minutes ago
Cashman on Cessa and Green: "They both have big arms ... I think they're both close. And I think they both have upside and will get better."

Mark Feinsand ‏@FeinsandNYDN 22m22 minutes ago
Cashman: "It's an area I needed to address." Wilson also entering arbitration "money-making" years.

Cashman said adding two young starters at Triple-A with a combined 12 years of control was the reason for the Wilson trade.

I kind of agree with this, although it is true that NY is thin at potential starters in the high minors after trading Greene and Phelps and Warren in the past two offseasons.

I think it may also have something to do with the Rule 5 draft tomorrow (I have no idea how, especially since I think Cessa needs to be protected and so they don't gain a 40 man spot), but also all the quotes post-deal from Cashman on Twitter seem like there will be more moves coming tonight.

I am totally guessing here, but WAS signed both Shawn Kelley and Yusmeiro Petit today. Drew Storen is a FA after this year and clearly not happy in WAS, I wonder if Cashman is trying to get him on the cheap, which would also solve the problem of NY's pen being too lefthanded.

I think you might be on to something. How high is WAS on Taylor's potential? They might have some interest in Gardner too. Those pieces don't match up by themselves, but could be the basis for some discussion.

Justin Wilson had a damn good year:
74 games
9.7 K/9
2.9 BB/9
0.4 HR/9

FIP 2.69
xFIP 3.12
xFIP- 77

As of now I am happy with this trade from a Boston standpoint.

Yeah, I think Cashman might think he's selling high, but it's a bit hard to understand in a vacuum, especially since selling high generally involves a better return than this seems to be.

You have to feel real good about your ability to put together a bullpen if you're trading away a 27 year old hard throwing left-hander.

They do have a ton of lefties behind him, not just Miller closing, but Shreve, Lindgren, Pazos, Tyler Webb all move up one in line after this. At some point you need to stop just protecting promising relievers on the 40 man and see if they can actually help you in more than the yo-yo last guy role. As you say, though, it's definitely aggressive, decidedly un-Yankee-like.

It didn't take many actual games for this deal to look a lot better than it did at the time. Shreve and Barbato have made it so I haven't seen a single person longing for Wilson since the season started, and Cessa and Chad Green (1.32 in 3 starts in AAA so far) who they got from DET have both shown signs of promise so far.

Wilson has done very well for DET so far also, but a lot happier with this now than I was when it happened. Thank you Based Cashman.
