We’re on to the off season. Time to get down to business.

First up, it appears the Coyotes and OEL have an agreement on a contract extension. Can’t be signed until 7/1, so things could go off the rails I suppose, but all the insiders are in agreement that this is basically done.

Also, Kovalchuk is on a tour doing visits. First up was a California swing hitting LAK and SJS. I think the Bruins should make a call here, but there could be fit issues. We’ll see where it goes.

Lee’s trial is the day of the draft, appropriately enough. Good thing his role focuses on amateur and youth player development...

Nice move by Chayka, wow

Bergevin has been in “take the keys away from me” mode for years at this point

I don’t hate the move for Montreal in a vaccuum. They sold at such a bad time though. Great deal for Arizona if they’re going to spend above the floor.

I love that Max Domi is now on a team I hate.

Reporting is going around that while is contract was "up," an extension was triggered by winning the cup that he turned down because it was less than what he'd get in free agency. The two sides tried to negotiate, but couldn't.

He’ll be an Islander shortly, I’d imagine.
Yeah, and I wish him the very best with Lou.

Don’t know what the deal is with Leonsis. Have a feeling he was not totally enamored with Grandpa Trotz continuing on. Maybe because he wants to promote an assistant (next hot thing). Maybe because he does not want to pay coaches very much (See Lerners and Washington Nationals).

In any case, he goes out on top. Hope he gets a lot of money and a good platform to build again.

The Bread Man tells CBJ he’s not ready to commit to an extension, so now he is on the trade market. Ah, silly season.

I could see it going to Kopitar as a "he's got to win it once in his career, so let's give it to him" award, but he already has one. Patrice was flat robbed.

Eh, he missed 20 games to injury. Hard to win a major award when you miss that much time. Plus he doesn’t do as much defensive heavy lifting as he has in years past. They don’t hard match him against the other teams top lines any more, nor does he get buried in d zone starts. They should still rename the award the Patrice Bergeron-Cleary award when he hangs the skates up, but I don’t think he was robbed this year.

Couturier has more of a gripe than Bergeron.

How many people actually watched enough Flyers or Kings games to have an opinion on this award?
I watched all of zero Kings games this year.

I honestly have no real opinion on whether or not Bergeron was robbed or not. I mainly wanted to make a silly, hyperbolic post.

And now I'll spin that into a gripe.

I wish the schedules were more balanced so that we could see more west coast/non-division teams. It's one thing in baseball where it's unbalanced but you have 6-7 games each against the AL west teams, but when there's half that many total it gets tougher. Is that selfish? Maybe.

This is correct - a whopping 56.4 dZS% and 3.2 defensive point shares. Hell the fact he scored 31 goals and 76 points with that kind of defensive zone start stat is remarkable.

The biggest gripe should have been the announcement of the actual winner. 2:05 mark has the reveal but the entire thing is brutal.

Wow, that's just brutal. The NHL has never been good at award shows, but that might be the worst I've ever seen.

That dZS% is strictly based on faceoffs, he was even when it comes to shifts started with the puck in the offensive vs defensive zone. Koivu had much more extreme zone usage and much better shot suppression, especially in high danger areas. But Couturier still deserved it over Kopitar

How would someone change when the puck is actually in the d-zone and not just a couple of D going back and forth waiting for a line change and transition opportunity to come up? I guess on when the other team is transitioning but that usually isn't a great time to change, especially for a center.

He's right, trades are hard. Unless you're giving up a star for a second pairing defenseman straight-up.

I'm using hockeyviz' data, which is explained here: http://hockeyviz.com/howto/skaterCard

Yeah you're right, D zone changes are probably extremely rare. But offensive zone changes are not so much, and they do have some meaning

Still in the afterglow of the Cup win, but this move is batshit crazy. Two President's Trophies and one Stanley Cup in four years, and Leonsis/McClellan can't cough up $4m a year to match what Trotz got from the Islanders today? Did they learn nothing from the three or four years of mediocrity after firing Bruce Boudreau? A good coach can make all the difference.

Sounds like Dougie, Ferland and Adam Fox to CAR for Lindholm and Hanifin.

Think the Flames got fleeced if that is the deal

Dougie is a top 10-15 D on a great contract. Great get for CAR. Hanifin needs to take a step or two forward to get into Hamilton’s class. This lines Carolina up to deal Faulk sometime soon.

That's an amazing trade for Carolina since Hanifin and Lindholm were both disgruntled and not close on contracts.

Now, Pacioretty and agent have split. Hmmm. Something is brewing.

Pierre LeBrun tweet says: "Agent Pat Brisson indicates he's parted ways with Max Pacioretty. No longer his agent. No hard feelings but a mutual decision both felt made sense at this time."
