I don't understand not picking either 2 US or 2 Canadian sites. I guess players can crossover fine, but what about management/refs/anyone else that needs to be able to travel? Eventually people are going to have to cross for the scf.

I'd love it if they didn't end up picking Toronto. All NHL Radio could talk about (other than the Sabres disfunction) was whether or not it would be OK for the Leafs to have their own dressing room.

They really should have picked Toronto and Vancouver, so Canadian people would know what it feels like to win a Stanley Cup in their country.

I know most of us think Dan Carcillo was kind of a garbage dude, but is anyone tracking this class action suit he filed against the CHL?

If any of this is true, there's a lot of people who need to be in prison, or worse.

I'm not sure how reliable Hockey Insiders is, but it's also been on CBC, ESPN, and NBC, among other sites. Sorry if this isn't the place for this.

At this point, I've stopped seeing him as a garbage dude. Those types of literal trauma, especially against children, can cause serious behavioral and social problems for a lifetime. Fighting back, and doing so publicly takes a whole bunch of courage, and I have nothing but respect for him for pursuing the changes he is.

My opinion of Carcillo has definitely changed. The allegations in the lawsuit are disturbing and I have no reason to not believe them. There is no doubt locker room culture is at best unwelcoming and uncomfortable to many. It undoubtedly drives many players from a sport even when it doesn't reach the extremes that Carcillo details. Hopefully yaks is a reckoning that helps drive meaningful change.

The league is ramping up phase 2. Starting today, the small group workout limits are expanding from 6 players to 12 players.

Lebrun has a piece up on the Athletic about the Hub’s. Nothing is finalized but it does seem to be that they are leaning Vegas and Vancouver with Edmonton and Toronto still closest in pursuit, with Chicago and LA long shots. Apparently the cases spike in Nevada hasn’t cooled them off Vegas and they are at least saying that they think Vegas can create the tightest bubble. IIRC, the Park MGM is the resort closest to T-Mobile arena. Are they going to shut that whole thing down, casino and all, to everyone outside of the NHL? Sure, a resort like that would have all the amenities they need, but how are they going to prevent players and staff who are there for 2-3 months from talking a walk down the strip and going to a restaurant or casino outside the bubble? I also feel like if they do takeover the Park MGM they’d be putting a lot of the casino and resort workers out of work for the duration of the tournament. That’s got to be a huge financial burden.

Edmonton is trailing Vancouver because of the living arraignments. Apparently in Edmonton they’d have to use 3 hotels...which aren’t of the same quality. They need ~600 rooms at the start for the 12 teams since teams are limited to a hub party of 50. Vancouver has a 500 room hotel 400 yards from the arena so they can get almost everyone in there for the play-in.

He doesn’t have much on Toronto’s bid but the league is worried about the Toronto bubble being too loose. The only thing it really has going is being in the Eastern time zone.

They like LA’s ability to create a bubble around the Staples Center but the players have tax concerns. Chicago doesn’t have an ideal infrastructure around the United Center. I’ve never been there, but it seems the hotels they need aren’t all that close.

Regarding Chicago, the area around the United Center is hit or miss without a ton of hotels. So they would likely need to stay somewhere either closer to the city or further out in the suburbs. Both of which seem less than ideal.

Park MGM hasn’t reopened and MGM doesn’t plan to until occupancy picks up at their other properties. This would actually bring more people back to work just to support the NHL which is why Vegas has always made sense. Not to mention T Mobile area which is partially owned and operated by... you guessed it... MGM Resorts. No brainer.

The only thing that actually makes sense from a health perpsective is not to do it in the US at all.

Or anywhere at all.

I just don't get this. The 2019-2020 season is ruined. Doing this, in addition to putting people's health at risk, delays next season as well.

Yeah, I should have prefaced with "if they are really going to do this."

New Zealand could work.

And all the sports leagues are doing this for one reason only. $$$$
I think that's the main reason but not the only reason.
There is a huge demand for live sports in the US, and it really could help provide some level of happiness. "Normalcy" doesn't just mean returning to restaurants and movie theaters. As someone who is used to watching live sports daily, I can say with certainty that my life will be better if sports come back this year. I also won't feel so claustrophobic staying home most of the time.

And $$$$$$$

I don’t think next season was starting until January regardless. They need the TV revenue in August or September or they could be in serious financial peril.

2020 HOF Class:

Jarome Iginla, Marian Hossa, Doug Wilson, Kevin Lowe, Kim St. Pierre, Ken Holland as a builder.

Edit: Had to do a double take on Lowe. Apparently in as a player?

I don't understand how Hossa is eligible despite being under contract with an NHL team.

Is it only 3 years in the NHL after last game, not 5? He played last in 2017. I don't think the under contract part matters.

Hossa made 3 straight Cups with 3 different teams. Definition of a hired gun, but he was a great one. 525 goals says it all.

The guy signed 2 unrestricted free agent contracts with a new team in 20 years. How is that the “definition of a hired gun?”

I've never been to Edmonton, but I don't see how they have the infrastructure or hotel rooms for so many teams.

There are no fans, so there is no need to play the games in the evening local time. Also, I assume the schedules will involve multiple games in one arena per day anyway.

Vancouver is out as hub city. Team announced today. So are Pittsburg, Columbus, Dallas and Minnesota.

Las Vegas, LA, Chicago, Toronto and Edmonton remain.

It’s going to be Vegas and Toronto. They should just announce it.
I really don't think it'll be Toronto. Way too easy for everyone to break the bubble there.

Im betting on Vegas and Edmonton

Edmonton makes a ton of sense. There's nothing to do in that part of the city, and there are a slew of hotels in the area. That arena is gorgeous to boot

So we can expect Carey Price and Tomas Tatar to come down with “corona-type” symptoms the night before the qualifying round.

This system is beyond fucked up. Detroit was the worst team of the salary cap era and they pick #4. Now a generational talent like Lafreniere will end up in Pittsburgh or Chicago or somewhere.
