It'll be interesting to see what the Jays do with Bowden Francis, the guy they called up in Manoah's place. Francis looked pretty meh the last couple of years, but apparently figured some things out in winter league this offseason that has helped his stuff play up. He was in the running for a bullpen spot in spring training before he got injured, but has been starting in the minors and was up to 70+ pitches so he could conceivably slide into Manoah's spot.

On the bright side, deGrom has survived 29.1 more innings in a Rangers uniform than Corey Kluber did.

The weirdest part of that contract is the mutual option year for his age 40 season.

deGrom is ~35 years old but has only thrown 1356 innings. So maybe he pitches into his mid-40's if the TJ goes well?

10 years, 2 CY Youngs but only 84 career wins, too.

Another defeat for the “injuries are random” crowd. DeGrom getting hurt is like the least shocking news ever. Guys about to turn 35, wonder how much he even has left.

Can’t imagine that contract has any insurance coverage either. Or maybe they do at super high premiums or something.

The deal was structured in a way to give the Rangers some insurance in case deGrom dealt with injuries in the early stages of the contract. It states that, if from 2023 to 2026, deGrom pitcher had Tommy John surgery on his right elbow or any right elbow or shoulder injury that caused him to be on the injured list for a period of 130 consecutive days during the season or 186 days in a row during a service period, the sixth year in 2028 would be a $20 million team option. Given that deGrom will be out for at least 12 months, the organization will now have this option.

If deGrom avoided surgery, that would’ve been a $37 million player option. The 2028 option can revert back to a player option if deGrom pitches 160 innings, has a Top 5 Cy Young Award finishes, and ends the season healthy.

The video of deGrom talking about the injury is tough to watch. I know some fans won’t feel too bad because he’s uber rich, but he’s crying and obviously devastated by everything.

Cleveland has released starting catcher Mike Zunino. Bo Naylor is being promoted and expected to get the bulk of the playing time behind the plate for the rest of the year. In the past month, the Guardians have released their oldest position player (Zunino, 32) and oldest pitcher (Zach Plesac, 28). The oldest member of the team is now Josh Bell at 30 years and 10 months. He's one month older than Jose Ramirez. Cam Gallagher is the only other 30-year-old on the team. The oldest pitcher is 28-year-old Cal Quantrill.

In bad news, Triston McKenzie was scratched from his start tonight because of elbow pain and went to get an MRI instead. The team doesn't seem to be giving any hint as to how worrisome this might be. McKenzie has only made two starts this year since returning from a back/shoulder muscle strain.

The Pirates are promoting 2021 No. 1 overall pick Henry Davis to the majors. Drafted as a catcher, he's expected to see time in RF and behind the plate. / Post-Gazette / mlbtr

This is awesome. Love seeing teams like the Pirates try to improve through the year instead of holding him back for next year and the potential RotY draft boons. The Oakland situation sucks, but having teams like Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Miami, Minnesota and Arizona at least in the competition for playoff spots makes the sport better.

Shout out because Davis is a local boy (two years ahead of my girls in HS). I called them to watch on TV but only one could be bothered to watch, as baseball is not a big sport here.

Text: The Cardinals will host the Giants in a Negro Leagues tribute at Rickwood Field in Birmingham, AL next June, airing on Fox.

Rickwood Field is the oldest professional baseball park in the US, and was home of the Birmingham Barons, and, notably for this event, the Birmingham Black Barons of the Negro League. This should be a pretty awesome event.

That's going to be much cooler than the Field of Dreams. MLB sent out a survey last year asking about locations to have games and I put Rickwood in as my top choice. I imagine I wasn't alone on that.

They say it's going to be a celebration of Willie Mays. As unlikely as it is to happen, it would be awesome if he could possibly attend.

Will former Barons star Michael Jordan attend as a fan, or will he pass so he doesn't take away media attention away?

That’s terrific. Somewhere I have a BBB hat from a Negro League tribute game, I think at Shea.

Wtf are they smoking in the replay room? You have multiple angles and slo-mo, how do you screw that up?

Wtf if the catcher can't do that, are they going to outlaw the first baseman putting their foot on the bag next? He was as invisible as possible while awaiting the ball: standing up fairly straight, behind the front of the plate, legs apart so the runner could slide to either side of the plate. Seemed textbook to me.

Manfred really is not a talker.

https://theathletic.com/4630312/2023/06/21/rob-manfred-astros-cheating-scandal-immunity/?source=emp_shared_article

Three years later, MLB commissioner Rob Manfred thinks that perhaps he should have tried to suspend Houston Astros players after all.

In a wide-ranging interview with TIME, the commissioner said that he would like a do-over on “some of the decisions surrounding the Houston situation,” referring to the Astros’ electronic sign-stealing scandal.

And Rob Manfred can once again go fuck himself: https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/37905435/rob-manfred-protest-lags-decade-worth-inaction

Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred says one big turnout by Oakland Athletics fans doesn't change "a decade worth of inaction" as he defended earlier comments about the "reverse boycott" held in protest of the team's proposed move to Las Vegas.
Oh gee, why would the fans not be deliriously excited over attending games at a shithole stadium with a bottom 5 payroll every season? Just say the quiet part out loud Rob, 'The fans didn't go for our continued extortion attempts to publicly fund a stadium, so screw 'em.'

I can’t believe that Id be looking at the days of Bud Selig and wish that he was still commissioner. At least he liked baseball.

Once Manfred is out, the amount of shit that he’s done to ruin baseball as a whole is going to be a mile long.

What are your feelings about putting a game, top 3 rivalry, in a 1/3 empty stadium in non-baseball market on national tv?
