After winning 14-6 on Wednesday following being called out by a front office member, the Padres got out to a 12-2 lead through 5 tonight.

... And lost 16-13.

I wonder if Don counted the pitcher's wait time as Seattle scored 9 in the seventh

Matt Albers' heroics get the win for the White Sox against the Mets:
Matt Albers entered in the 12th inning as the seventh White Sox pitcher and successfully kept the game tied, 1-1, with a scoreless frame. He returned to the dugout, where Manager Robin Ventura, who once hit a grand slam to win a playoff game for the Mets, told him to grab a bat. Albers did not have one. Nor a helmet.

The husky Albers — perhaps, you could say, a poor man’s version of Bartolo Colon — last made a plate appearance in 2009. His first major league hit was in 2007 against Zach Duke, now a teammate.

Four hours 20 minutes into the game, Albers channeled Colon’s theatrics in the batter’s box. Leading off the 13th with his teammate Dioner Navarro’s bat, Albers drilled Logan Verrett’s 2-2 pitch into the left-center-field gap for a double.

His teammates roared with laughter and slapped the dugout railing. That was only the beginning of the high jinks. With Jose Abreu at the plate, Albers cruised to third base on a wild pitch.

“I was going to slide, and I didn’t see it; it was just a mess,” Albers said. “But I made it.”

He scored on a sacrifice fly, beating an off-target throw by center fielder Juan Lagares, a Gold Glove award winner and the Mets’ best defensive outfielder. Waving home Albers was the former utility player Joe McEwing, now the White Sox’ third-base coach. “They didn’t think I could do it,” Albers said, still somewhat in shock at his athletic feats. “It was pretty funny. Man, I did that — a wild pitch, and I scored on a sac fly.”

Jake Arrieta has 11 Ks through 4 IP against the D-Backs.

Now 12 through 5 IP but he's at 108 pitches, so he might be done.

Chapman in for the 5 out save trying to hold on to a 1 run lead.

Tigers pounding the Blue Jays. Pillar having a rough night, misplayed a single into a triple for Castellanos in the 2nd (he scored on a McCann HR) and made an error in the 6th on another Castellanos single (went to 2nd, scored on a single by Upton). Happ gave up 6 runs in 5 innings; Floyd in the 6th - pulled with 2 out, bases loaded, already 3 runs in - Tigers up 9-0 so far

Machado and Ventura both ejected, Baltimore responds with Trumbo and Davis going back to back in the same inning

Is it just me or did Sal Perez not seem all that interested in wrapping up Machado before he got to his pitcher? I wonder if some of the Royals are sick of Ventura acting like a head case.
Yeah, that was the first thing I noticed. I was in the third row when John Shelby charged Roger Clemens, bat in hand, after he was drilled following the Rocket giving up back-to-back home runs. John Marzano, a high school linebacker, ran Shelby down and tackled him just before he hit the mound.

Also, people named Ventura shouldn't fight.

That was a great brawl. Machado wasted no time in punching Ventura which I have no problem with. He's a loose cannon.
Except that his punch showed that the last fight Machado ever had was likely as a toddler. It was awful. Marciano can critique further but Machado should be suspended for shitty form alone.

He was probably surprised to get to the mound without being restrained and didn't know what to do with himself.

Especially when Machado didn't exactly rush out right away because he was holding his ribs in pain so his charge was realllllly slow.

The punch did it's job. It wasn't a straight-on hit, but it did catch Ventura flush in the face and knocked him down (as he was spinning like a kid on the schoolyard - don't hit me bro! duck/spin/duck). That's why Ventura was so pissed afterwords - he knew he got dropped.

It takes a lot for me to side with the Orioles, but good for Machado in this case.

The Cubs are crushing Andrew Bailey right now. Bryant and Zobrist both have homers this inning.

I wish I knew why Ventura is doing this. He seems hyper prickly even for a pitcher.

Jim Kaat on a mini-rant against "analytics" and he relayed a quote that summed up his feelings, regarding what a manager told his GM: "Stop sending me athletes and start sending me ballplayers."

Well actually, that's EXACTLY what analytics is trying to do--tell you who's really good at actually playing the game (ballplayers) versus who looks the part (athletes).

Big Game James has given up 3 HR in 1IP in his White Sox debut. 6-0.
Pitch counts in this game right now are 79 for Shields (through 2) and 9 for Scherzer (through 1). That seems possibly unprecedented.

This along with his last San Diego start means he's got to be broken or cooked, right? So incredibly glad we were never foolish enough to trade for him.

Edit: another hit to start the 3rd, and he's pulled. Final line: 2+ IP, 6ER on 84 pitches, 8 H, 2 BB, 2 SO, 3 HR.

Nope! That last hit scored. 7 ER.

Machado is a punk who didn't learn from his bat throwing incident. Should have gotten 10 games.
I see nothing wrong with a batter getting 10 games for charging the mound, but only if a pitcher who has made a habit of hitting batters is suspended enough to guarantee missing more than 1 start. I'm sort of stunned that of the two suspensions it's Machado's 4 game and not Ventura's 1 start that has you upset.

While it seems ludicrous that Ventura is only being suspended for 1 start you have to take into consideration he is losing 9 games of pay. Despite only missing one start he definitely is feeling the effects of bing an out of control dumbass on the mound.

Ventura is not the best example since he has a history, but my sense is that pitcher suspension's are only in cases where the batter charges the mound. If batter does not react, MLB ignores, pitcher is not suspended.

Got a good one out in San Francisco with Cueto vs Kershaw. The Giants just tied it up in the bottom of the 6th.
