D-backs on a L17, the aforementioned L23 on the road and overall 5-40 in their last 45. That's unconscionably bad.

I was about to stop caring until they started caring and brought up Wander, Brujan and Lowe. But I’ll take Wander and call it enough.

DeGrom retired the Braves 1-2-3 in the first which gives him 34 straight first inning batters retired, an expansion era (post-1961) record.

This is fun, he ultimately swings the bat because 2nd and 3rd 2 outs, then fields a comebacker right at him, for any other organization it would be different but for the Mets his season or career feels on the line every 30 seconds.

deGrom is just simply amazing to watch. We are witnessing a pitcher who is playing in a different world than anyone else. 29 consecutive scorelss as of the moment.

The cradle of the game.
David Ross just took Javy Baez out of tonight's game after Baez got doubled up on the bases - because he forgot how many outs there were.

Throwing out last “season,” the best season performance by a pitcher was Pedro in 2000 with an ERA+ of 291. deGrom is currently sitting at a 777. He’s breaking the metric.

Not sure about all of you, but his starts are all must-see.

Ha, just came here to post this. At 72 IP, he has now qualified for BB-Ref's leaderboard, with the following:

0.50 ERA
777 ERA+
0.87 FIP
.514 WHIP
3.4 H/9
14.6 K/9
11.7 K/BB

My word. It's like the 2001-2002 Bonds of pitching (presumably w/o the cheating?)

To qualify for the ERA title you simply need 1 inning per game and deGrom qualifies for that with room to spare. I'm not sure why innings would be an issue since he's currently on pace for 174.

To be fair, Pedro had a 0.99 ERA through his first 91.1 innings of 2000, in a completely different offensive era than the one we were in. Those 91.1 innings also came through June 14 before he had a rough stretch that jacked his ERA up.

edit: The league in 2000 hit .270/.345/.437. The league, so far this year, is hitting .239/.313/.400.

Scherzer was dealing against the Phillies when Girardi asks the umps to check him for sticky substances in the middle of the fourth, after a strikeout. It's apparently the third time that Scherzer was checked in the game. Scherzer drops his hat, glove and untucks his shirt, inviting the inspection.

Words are exchanged between Girardi, Scherzer and Davey Martinez.

Scherzer ends the 5th with his 8th k of the night. Walks off and stares over at the Phil's dugout. Girardi, apparently respecting the game, leaps out of the dugout yelling let's go, and gets tossed for being an idiot.

Kevin Long, who coached for Girardi in NY, was screaming obscenities at Girardi from the WAS dugout, and that’s who Girardi was yelling back at, not Scherzer. There’s a Jomboy breakdown of it because of course there is:

Whether he was yelling at Long or Scherzer, the fact is that Girardi is a complete ass. One can only hope that someone takes him up the next time he issues an empty challenge and hits him so hard he can’t eat ice cream.

He was yelling back at Long who was screaming 'fuck you!' across the field at him, he was using his name. And I'm not sure how you're so sure about the outcome of a theoretical fight between two 50-something former player/current coaches, but ok.

Kershaw, talking about this situation, had an interesting idea that mgrs should have to use one of their replay challenges to ask the ump to check for sticky stuff.

Nothing I said precludes a finding that Kevin Long is also an ass.

Girardi is still a sanctimonious asshole. Has been at every stop in his managerial career.

Girardi is a fucking asshole. He is indefensible. Reds is right, he's just an asshole.

What he did yesterday was petty and ridiculous. Further, he got the response he was looking for because he's a troll and trolls get fed, but he made a mockery of himself. He deserved to be told fuck you. Sometimes, people earn it.

Schwarber just hit his 9th HR in 10 games. A 3 run shot on the second pitch from reliever Bradley to make it 5-5. The starter Valasquez had K’d him twice.

Bryce Harper has10 rbi on his 10 HRs this year.

Nationals just battered the Phillies pitcher (David Hale) for 6 runs in the 6th, culminating in a grand slam to take an 11-9 lead.

Hale being checked by umps as he left the mound is the cherry on the shadenfreude sundae.

This is exactly right. I watched that game and it was a complete joke. Girardi should have to manage in a clown suit for the next month as penance for that performance.

This seems hard to believe:

This Nationals-Phillies game is the first game in MLB history where both teams hit a 3-run home run and a grand slam.

I feel like a guy who gets his lunch should be exempted from the search. If he is cheating, it's clearly not working.

Nola struck out Conforto to tie Seaver's record (10 straight Ks) and then gave up a double to Alonso.

Giants vs A's is awesome tonight. Tyler Rogers is something else.

Also, I found out the Giants still bring Jon Miller in for late innings, which is pretty awesome.

Josh Naylor just had a NSFL/Dak injury in the Indians game.

that’s all I am going to say. I’m not going to post the replay here for obvious reasons
