Shit. The Phils just took LHP Matt Imhof out of Cal Poly. I was hoping he'd stick until the Sox pick.

Hmmm. I had an aunt maried to an Imhof. There were only 1,163 occurences of that surname listed in the 2000 Census so I might have to do some digging.

If the Sox go with a college bat here, hopefully it's Indiana 1B Sam Travis. But I suspect it'll be a HS arm.

This guy's a line drive monster and a walk machine. Great fucking pick.

I dunno. It's not official until Nick J Faleris gives his seal of approval

Another MA player taken: Isan Diaz, 2B from Springfield Central HS, goes to the Cards.

Kendall Rogers @KendallRogersPG
@RedSox fans will love #Indiana 1B Sam Travis. Blue collar type of player with big-time raw power.

Hopefully Greenville. I think he can handle that level out of the gate.

Since I know very little about this sort of thing - once he signs, how quickly would he report?

Would the expected development path of such a player see him in AA by 2015 and AAA in 2016 - with a chance to make the majors any time after that?

So we drafted John Valentin, Craig Hansen and Kevin Youkilis?  :buddy:

That would actually be a great draft (and Kopech isn't actually much like Hansen, other than being tall, thin and a right-handed pitcher.)

If it's Greenville he'd report pretty much immediately. Maybe to Fort Myers first for orientation, but they'll get him on an affiliate ASAP. If it's one of the short-season teams (Gulf Coast or Lowell), they start play about a week after the draft.

For college hitters (non-catchers) drafted this early, a path of three years (or sooner) is desirable. Three to four years is generally acceptable depending on their upside and whether or not they're blocked at the big club. Barring injury, any longer than that is usually a red flag. Teams really want these guys in a lineup and starting to produce by the time they're 24 -- 25 at the latest. That's why 2010 1st rounder Kolbrin Vitek was a complete bust. He couldn't hack any level about A-ball, and was merely adequate at high-A Salem, so his career came to an end this spring.

I just hope Travis doesn't suffer from the "hitters from colleges in Indiana drafted by the Red Sox" jinx (Vitek was a Ball State product).

Just caught up on the thread and I'm excited about the day one picks.  Chavis is intriguing and seems like a really solid bet at #26, the movement on Kopech's pitches is just ridiculous (and Mayo predicted the Sox grabbing him, though he had it at 26, not 33) and Sam Travis reminds me a bit of Kevin Youkilis with that swing, which is definitely a good thing.  I like seeing two players with good hit tools grabbed early this year, and love the reports of Shaw having plus power.

Can't wait to see what the Sox do with day 2.

Is day 2 over the phone or is that day 3?

I'm going to start the new draftees threads here due to general interest then move them over to the minor league forums in a bit.

Trace Loehr (NW's top prospect) is expected to go early in day 2.  Hopefully round 3 or 4.  Committed to Oregon State, but I think could sign.

I mention him because we don't get a ton of great prospects out of Oregon, let alone, my alma mater. So I am rooting for him.   I watched him play a number of times this season...dynamic kid that works his tail off.  Fastest kid I have ever seen play baseball.  I talked to scouts about him and his speed, in particular the scout that signed Jacoby, and he basically said this kid is not quite Jacoby, but not far off at all.

Rounds 3 thru 10 are today. Live stream here (no TV coverage on MLBN).

The Astros have the day's first pick (#75). The Sox' 3rd round pick is #103. Then they'll get #134, #164, #194, #224, #254, #284 and #314.

Yeah, he'd be a nice pickup if he's there. BA's profile:

The lefthanded hitter is an energetic, high-intensity gamer with tools and instincts. Scouts who like Loehr believe he could develop into an above-average hitter with his bat-to-ball skills, compact stroke and advanced approach. His line-drive stroke will likely limit him to below-average power, though he has a chance to have high doubles production. An average runner, Loehr’s speed plays at plus on the field and out of the box. His speed has a chance to be an asset on the bases with a quick first step and instincts. His above-average lateral range, body control and sure hands are a defensive asset. Loehr has an average arm that plays up because of a quick release and gives him a chance to stay at short, and he could be an above-average defender at second, his most likely long-term destination. The 5-foot-10, 180-pounder has an athletic build with present strength and room to fill out further.

On the college side, Arkansas 2B Brian Anderson (who has also played 3B & OF) had a down season for the Hogs, mostly from poor strike zone management, but he's got first-round tools including a power bat and a ridiculous arm. I love his swing mechanics (he bats RH), and his versatility coupled with a recovered plate approach would make him an ideal roster asset able to play 3 infield spots and both OF corners. But since he's a bit of a "we can fix him" gamble whose shortcomings are health-related, I doubt he lasts into double-digit picks.

I'm also a fan of Pepperdine's Aaron Brown, who's got projection as both an OF and an LHP. He throws strikes with his FB (rides around 90 but hits 93), has a really nice mid-80s slider, and a decent change. Like Anderson, he's got a sweet stroke with solid power (albeit from the left side) and a great arm that would easily carry in Fenway's RF, but needs to work on chasing off-speed stuff (the bane of 99.999997% of power-hitting prospects).

Four college players off the board to start the day. Houston nabs CS-Fullerton 3B J.D. Davis, MIA takes Anderson, the White Sox grab Oregon State lefty Jace Fry, and the Cubs pick VaTech catcher Mark Zagunis.

EDIT - Make it five straight, as the Twins take RHP Mike Cederoth of SDSU (great tools, lots of work to do).

EDIT - I guess none of these clubs want to invest any more development time than is absolutely necessary. Six in a row as Kentucky CF Austin Cousino heads to Seattle.

Part of me would love to see one NFL Draft that moves as quickly as MLB ... just to see Kiper's hair combust

Maybe Arkansas RHP Chris Oliver will survive until #103. He's rail-thin at 6-4, 180, but throws 97. Future reliever.

Fwiw. Was talking to Tanner English' dad last night. He had no idea where he's going but said the Sox had shown the strongest interest. We'll see as the day develops.

Wasn't suggesting taking Tanner with 103, just wanted drop in and update that. At my son's graduation so I can't follow that close.

The 3rd round concludes with 7 straight college players, who comprised 21 of the 30 picks in the round.

Oliver goes to the Phils at #112 (7th pick of round 4). So now they've got two of my binkies.

Gotta love a kid who's only just learning to pitch. He's obviously got the physical tools if he can throw 98, he's got a simple delivery and you don't have to worry about undoing bad habits. The Sox basically have a lump of incredibly high quality clay here. Can't wait to see how he develops.
