Carolina made 20 mil in gate money last year and they will owe him 21 over the first calendar year. They don't have the cash. Feels like he's a Hab.

Nah Carolina is fucking stupid.
"Waddell on offer sheet: "It's certainly a surprise, it's a surprise it wasn't more. Literally we got the email at 2:40 today so all people are not fully aware yet."

last week:
Waddell says offer sheet talk is overblown by the media and he's in contact with a lot of GMs and they agree. "There are a lot of things I have to worry about in this job and that's not something I think about for one second."

Between here and everywhere.
Other people smarter than you about this are saying what I'm saying. Rooting for this to happen.
By all means feel free to link these people who are saying that because the Canes only brought in 20 million at the gate last year, they can't pay Aho 21 million next year.

I'd really love to see that.

Edit: Feel free to do this once you're off hold with Felger and Mazz. I'm not in any rush.

So when is the CBA up? Because if teams start losing RFA’s to offer sheets there will surely be a long destructive war, I mean lock out.

If you can fuck with a team that is trying to grab one of your players, why not? May hurt future negotiations down the road if they're trying to work out a trade but it's as much within Waddell's right to screw with Montreal as much as it is within Montreal's right to offer Aho. It's okay for both of them to do so. It's in the CBA and they are exercising their rights.

Montreal is trying to the bonus gambit that Philly pulled on Nashville with Weber with the bonus structure.

Yost has been going on about this for a few days, but the play if you really want to get a player is over pay a mid range guy. This year he’s talking about Lebanc and Kapanen/Johansson before they signed.

Even being offended one team offer sheeted your guy is why we're here in the first place. They should happen often and the other team should make a quick decision and move on and laugh about it.

No that's ok. I don't understand the vitriol by Carolina though. IT'S THE CBA NOT A RETRIBUTION GAME. Stop the Habs from offer sheeting other players? WHO CARES.
I get what you're saying - the guys in GM roles are supposed to be fully rational actors, but at the end of the day there's some value in spite / retribution as well.

Bergevin tried to make Waddell's life more difficult by flexing his financial (and real life, huminahuminahumina) muscle and signing Aho to a financially crippling deal for Carolina. For Bergevin, this was made possible by working in a big market and having the Molsons' money behind him. In addition to the $21m in ~12 months, Carolina now loses the flexibility to trade Aho for a year if they choose to match as well.

If I'm Waddell and I've now got to convince my stingy ass owner to pay Aho both $21m in the next year and $6.95m regardless of a lockout, and I have Bergevin making quotes about how much a player I still have the rights to wants to be in Montreal, I'm going to try and figure out how to fuck him over as much as I possibly can. Putting Montreal's feet to the flames now also deters them from coming after, say, Svechnikov in two summers.

Okay. I'm not arguing that though. I'm arguing against your whining about Waddell potentially exercising his one week to match when IT'S THE CBA!!! Much worse has been done in the NHL before.

Love the trolling and gamesmanship from Waddell and Bergevin. This is the most interesting day of offseason activity that I can remember. More of this please.

B's also get Brendan Gaunce for 1 year, $700k

Looks like line 5 is set with Lindholm, Gaunce, and Ritchie

Seems like a footnote but somewhat significant, Colorado with their oodles of cap space is retaining half of Barrie's deal, so the net cap hit to Toronto should be a wash at worst.

What does that trade say about Krug's trade value? Barrie is as close a comp to Krug as there is in the NHL esp considering the contracts.
Either COL was really all-in on a declining dirty player one bad hit away from a very long suspension or the market for Barrie was very light.
Kerfoot for Kadri would have probably been a fair deal given contract/age. Barrie with 1/2 salary retained was worth the difference between a 3rd and a 6th?

I like that trade for the Leafs but their current model is not sustainable long term. I guess I understand the urgency to try to win now, but that team is not appreciably better than last years version and they will be riiiiighhht at the cap when the move horton to LTIR and sign Kerfoot and Marner. They are at $74.9 mil when Ceci's deal is signed. That leaves $5.1 mil in space plus Horton's LTIR $5.3 mil. They likely still need to move a little more money to get everyone to fit. Hyman is hurt, so Nylander? Assuming they spend $12 mil (i think this is conservative) they will have $63 mil committed to 9 forwards and 1D going into the next year. Dermott, Ceci, Barrie and Muzzin will all be looking for contracts and only Dermott will be an RFA.

I gotta give Dubas credit, he clearly has a plan. You don't make this series of moves without a well thought out plan. I just don't get it yet. Really interesting team. I wish I didn't hate them so much.

You should be so proud. You must be one of those people that think offer sheets are greasy and a snake move by teams. Bruins need to get on offer sheeting Laine right now.

This should be in Laine's hands right now

Why in God's name would they do this when they have RFA's McAvoy, Carlo, and Heinen to take care of and have $10.1 million in cap space? Your offer sheet exceeds the amount of cap space the team currently has without having the 3 RFAs in the fold.

Whether it's wise or not, there's no way the Bruins would be interested in Laine. They just don't value guys who are bad defensively, no matter what they bring offensively. And he's really bad.
