Is that Paul contract a good one or an overpay? Seems like the expectation was that he’d sign for around what Goodrow got?

It is roughly the same as Goodrow. Paul got an extra year which lowered the AAV slightly.

Goodrow 6 years $3.6AAV
Paul 7 years $3.15 AAV

Seems like both are overpays, these kind of guys are easily replaceable. I'm not sure you need to lock them up for so long.

Also, from the June Thread because I forgot it was a new month, the Sharks fired all their coaches last night.

Yeesh. Full on cap dump of McDonagh. You gotta wonder if the cap is finally catching up with the lightning. They have Seabrook's LTIR this year and next so they have about $4m left to use up of that this offseason and about $30m next year, but Cirelli, Colton, Cernak and Sergachev to sign. Briesbois is great so we'll see but they have an atrocious prospect pool. McDonagh took all their toughest matchups which will now fall on Sergachev. I don't know that he's up to that. I guess we'll find out.

LeBrun's latest
--JT Miller is on the trade block. The Rangers are among the teams in on him.
--Teams are approaching Calgary about RFA Matthew Tkachuk.
--Teams are also putting their best and final offers out on Alex DeBrinkcat. It most likely will require a package with a first round pick in it.
--Calgary will meet with Johnny Gaudreau's agent over the next few days to see if he's coming back or hitting the market.
--Carolina is expected to be a suitor for Claude Giroux along with Edmonton and Ottawa.

Here's more on the Kaprizov story:

https://theathletic.com/3404266/2022/07/06/kirill-kaprizov-russia-flight/?source=emp_shared_article

There's a lot to unpack. I guess he bought a fake military ID in 2017, which is why he's wanted. Also, there's mandatory military service for Russian men between 18-27. As an athlete, he had an exemption but that expired on 6/30. Apparently in the past they've ignored the military requirement for star athletes, particularly hockey players for CSKA Moscow, for whom Kaprizov did play for but also left for Minnesota amidst pressure to stay.

There's a source quoted that thinks Kaprizov will be fine unless Putin gives the order to keep him in Russia.

Crazy stuff.

Letang signed a 6 year, $36.6M contract with Pittsburgh. He's 35 so he'll make a great Coyote in the last couple years of the deal.

That is not a good contract. It's 35+ and loaded with signing bonus so its buyout proof and LTIR proof.

That's your Pasta floor. Maybe JP Barry thinks his two clients are similar and would be ok with that number for Pasta.

8/ $9.5-10 AAV for Pasta is my guess. That’s be hard to beat on the FA market.
I'm assuming he matches the McAvoy contract as well. Maybe a bit short because of the 2 years age difference but I don't expect less than $9m. I've always seen Rantanen as the floor and Panarin as the ceiling for his deal.

Dubas is a really good GM and he makes some very shrewd moves and takes advantage of where they play really well. and then he trades for Matt Murray. Baffling.

I don't understand the Penguins logic. They're willing to go 6-years for a 35 year old Kris Letang, but won't budge off 3 for a 35 year old Evgeni Malkin?

Wonder if he ends up with NYR as Strome's replacement.

They got it done eventually, but I think it came down to Letang is relatively reliable health-wise and a noted workout freak (and also coming off a career-best season) while Malkin is seemingly always hurt and has a rep for being lazy, plus seems to be mainly a power play specialist at this point.

Sounds like the Devils and Flyers for Gaudreau. Devils have the cap space, but the Flyers may be his preferred landing spot. Word was Flyers were trying to move JVR's $7 million off the books but weren't willing to attach their 1st round pick to him to do so.

I'm shocked Gaudreau wanted out of Calgary given he's said he loves the city. They would have built a statue for him had he stayed.
