Trade season is kicking into gear. The Tampa Bay Rays are acquiring catcher Christian Bethancourt from the Oakland A's for AAA outfielder Cal Stevenson and Class A right-hander Christian Fernandez, sources familiar with the trade tell ESPN.

Nolan Jones is enjoying his first 24 hours in the bigs… debut rbi double last night + a single. This afternoon he hits one 457 feet and they needed a fishing net to retrieve his first MLB home run from the waterfall in KC.

Atlanta and Kansas City are finalizing a trade that will send center-field prospect Drew Waters, right-handed pitching prospect Andrew Hoffmann and a third minor leaguer to the Royals for the 35th pick in Sunday's draft, which has a $2.2 million slot value, sources tell ESPN.

So … when did trading amateur draft picks become a thing?

I can’t recall one traded before this so one assumes the new CBA?

Speaking of KC trade news, how much truth is there to the Benintendi to MFY rumor?

The competitive balance picks (believe 35th is in that range) have always been tradeable.
True, and this is a competitive balance pick. The Royals explicitly state that in their tweet about the trade.

The picks are a relatively new thing, introduced to the draft in the 2012 CBA. There's only a max of 20 such picks each year (10 smallest market + 10 lowest revenue teams, there's usually overlap and teams can only get one). The picks can only be traded once, so the Braves can't flip that pick to someone else. Only the original team can trade it.

I didn't realize Drew Waters' stock had fallen that hard. Seems like just yesterday he was precisely what you would hope for in that part of the draft. Now they have to package him for a nameless, faceless wish.

He's rule 5 eligible this offseason / 40 man roster crunch, too. Red Sox might have some similar looking trades this month.

That is a lot of key guys for them. Definitely the biggest chunk of unvaccinated we have seen on one team.
In terms of quality and importance to the lineup, you may be right. The Reds (Drury, Mahle, Almora, Kuhnel) and Twins (Kepler, Pagan, Theilbar, Megill) also put four on the restricted list when they traveled to Toronto earlier in the season, so it's a tie for most unvaxxed players. As far as I can tell, only three teams (of 12) so far have not had to leave anyone behind while traveling to play the Jays: Rangers, Astros, Yankees.

Royals players Whit Merrifield, Andrew Benintendi, Hunter Dozier, Cam Gallagher, MJ Melendez, Brady Singer, Brad Keller, Kyle Isbel, Michael A. Taylor and Dylan Coleman will be placed on the restricted list for the four-game series in Toronto, per manager Mike Matheny.

The article I just read said the Royals can promote players for the series who can be moved on and off the 40 man roster while being exempt from the usual requirements (waiver process, etc). My understanding was that only applied to roster moves to replace players who were out due to COVID protocol, not for unvaxxed players on Toronto trips. Was I wrong? Has it changed? Is this a special rule for Kansas City just so they can still field a 26-man roster? It's insane they have 2.5x more ineligible players than any other team that's played in Toronto so far.

You were mistaken. The COVID restricted list players can be replaced using the same protocols as the COVID IL. The rules are set up to not punish teams for things out of their control, like a player contracting the virus or a player choosing not to be vaccinated.

The Red Sox, for example, brought up Yolmer Sanchez to replace Jarren Duran during their last trip to Toronto, then returned him to Worcester after the series. They did the same to bring up John Schreiber to replace Crawford (or Houck, take your pick) during the first Toronto series. He was returned to Worcester then selected to the 40-man for real a week later.

Frick’s Asterisk is not entirely wrong. The ability to promote (and, more pertinently, demote) players as COVID replacements without consideration to their 40-man roster status is at the discretion of the MLB Commissioner’s Office. The Phillies placed four players on the Restricted List prior to this week’s series in Toronto but were not allowed a COVID replacement for Aaron Nola, with the Commissioner’s Office citing that Nola’s next scheduled turn would not fall during the Blue Jays series.

Royals get 3 pitching prospects, no one in the top 18 from the MFY

Chandler Champlain, Beck Way and TJ Sikkema are the prospects

Sikkema, a lefty, is No. 19, and the right-handed Way is No. 21.

I like the Yankees acquiring him. But I am not sure how much more the Royals could have gotten for a two month rental of a guy with 3 homers all year and a questionable vaccination status (though he is expected to get vaxxed.)

If one of these guys makes it to the big leagues, it's probably worth it.

The Mets now have four members of the 2016 Indians. Cleveland has two. Hopefully they'll have Carlos Carrasco for the playoffs though.

Philip Diehl was a 27th round pick in 2016 by the Yankees who was a fringe rule 5 protect in 2019. Instead NY moved him to COL for Mike Tauchman who had a spectacularly promising 2019 (2.9 bWAR in 296 PAs) before fizzling just as fast, but still Cashman managed to trade him to SF for three years of Wandy Peralta, through 2023.

That's an incredible deal for Atlanta. They buy all of his prime for a $20M AAV and he's only 35 when the contract ends, I'd bet at least 7 of those years will be equal to or beat the value of the contract.

Atlanta signs all of their guys to sweetheart deals. It’s amazing. Devers’ agent can’t be too psyched about this deal. Riley seems like a really good comp.

Musgrove has been "worth" about 99 mill the past 5 seasons combined so far - including the partial 2020 season. Seems like a good deal for the Padres. I would think he could have gotten another 20 to 25 mill if he had signed this off-season.
