Baltimore has position player Stevie Wilkerson trying to close it, he has gotten Goodwin and Calhoun to start the inning.

1-2-3, a position player has gotten a save for the first time since... (someone will tweet out whatever Elias says)

His pitches were being clocked in the mid-fifties, presumably by a sun dial.

there was a close call at the plate for the winning run in the 15th that went the Orioles' way, too close to overturn. that and using their starter for tomorrow, but giving up 5 runs in 2 innings, had to be painful.

Geez, I had time to make breakfast by the time those pitches came to the plate. Amazing that was 1-2-3. This is why I love baseball.

1963, Willie Smith x2 for the Tigers, although that’s retroactively applied, hence my note above.

As a baseball word, save goes back to 1952 as one who finished games (but didn’t win them) for the Dodgers, Pirates, Cardinals. Jim Holtzman probably recorded this in The Sporting News 56 years ago, but MLB didn’t really do much with it, unlike the Fireman of the Year Award, around the same time.

DeGrom was pitching a day game today, so 7 IP 0 R 9K's

He's now (in 51 games) down to a 1.90 career ERA in day games, which is the all-time leader by a considerable margin (this tweet was as of last year, I don't think anyone there has improved since then :) )

Career ERA in day games, since 1913: 1. Jacob deGrom, 1.99 2. Mellie Wolfgang, 2.15 3. Joe Wood, 2.22 4. Eddie Cicotte, 2.22 5. Tom Hughes, 2.24 6. Bill James, 2.27 7. Babe Ruth, 2.28

The Orioles win!
Os are 8-10 in July, putting a crimp on their rebuilding plans.

Let's just take a moment to admire the long-term uselessness of Chris Davis. Over his last 1,000 at-bats he's put up a line of .185/.267/.347. He has hit 44 home runs over that time but struck out in 42% of his at-bats. During which the Orioles have paid him $53.5M for his contributions.

*
Speaking of which, it is amazing that Davis is not even the worst player on the Os by WAA. That would be Richie Martin who is -2.1 WAA (Davis is -1.8) and has an OPS+ of 41.

He's #1 in OOPS.

Giants win again. Sandoval hit a game-winning HR in the 11th. he will get lustily booed at Fenway in September.

The losing pitcher giving up that bomb was... Logan Allen, a lefty part of the Kimbrel deal and I think the piece many people were upset DD gave up. he has a 6.75 ERA as a rookie out of the pen, and a 1.767 WHIP that went up a bit with tonight's game.

Nelson Cruz hit another HR last night, giving him 26 on the year and an OPS+ of 156. It's amazing that nobody wanted this guy. Approaching 400 HR (currently 386) despite not becoming a full time player until he was 28, it's not crazy to wonder if he could have reached 500 with an earlier start -- 155 career minor league HR and 297/369/536 over 3106 minor appearances. He does have the PED connection which might keep him out of the HOF anyway but still, one of the more underappreciated players of the past decade.

Craig Kimbrel, bottom of the 10th at Miller Park, 3-2 lead, with Yelich, Saladino, Hiura up. Cubs 1 game ahead in the division over the Brewers.

HR, BB, HR. fly the L, tied standings.

STL is still a game ahead of both, but yeah. Give that man an extension! :)

Edit: 94.8 average on the FB for Kimbrel tonight, yikes.

oh, I forgot the Cards have been playing well this month. that's going to be a close division.

that was my main takeaway watching Kimbrel, he was sitting 94-96 on the FB and still missing location instead of 97-99.

Kimbrel is a disaster and anyone who saw him at the end of last year shouldn't be surprised. I'm glad the Sox didn't re-sign him.

10.2 IP, 8 ER, 8 BB, 14 K, 4 HR
6.75 ERA/8 FIP

The Hera home run trajectory should be proof the balls are juiced this year

Yesterday Rays were winning by 7 in the 6th and the bullpen blew it by the 9th and they lost in extras. Today Rays were losing by 7 in the 6th and it’s now tied 9-9 going into the 9th.

And Rays score in top of 9th and win 10-9. Blow a 7 run lead in the 6th and lose 10-9 on one day, come back from a 7 run deficit in the 6th and win 10-9 the next day. Sometimes the universe wants you to be a .500 team.

I don't recall ever seeing a pitcher do this before/during a manager pulling him.
Maybe we should start calling him "Boom-Boom" Bauer.

"One day in Philadelphia in tiny old Baker Bowl, where Casey (Stengel) had once played right field for the Phillies in front of that high tin fence, the Dodger manager went out to the mound to remove the pitcher, a burly right-hander who was then generally known as Walter Beck. In right field for the Dodgers that afternoon was Hack Wilson, who after several years of starring and drinking with the Cubs had been traded in 1932 to Brooklyn, where after one good season he mostly concentrated on drinking... Hack was exhausted from chasing baseballs hit by the Phils off the tin fence behind him, and...leaned over with his hands on his knees, his head down, his eyes closed. On the mound Beck argued with Stengel. He didn't want to be taken out...'No!' said the pitcher and turned and flung (the ball) into right field, over Wilson's head and against the tin wall. The startled Wilson, his head still down, heard it boom against the tin, thought it was another base hit and leaped into action. He raced back, fielded the ball off the wall, turned and threw a perfect strike into second base. Walter Beck was Boom-Boom Beck after that." - Author Robert W. Creamer in Stengel: His Life and Times (Simon and Schuster, 1984)

That's awesome. Hadn't heard that one before. Might need to buy a new book

Diaz gives up Syndergaard's W at the White Sox, 2-2 in the bottom of the 9th now. BB, K, wild pitch, HBP, wild pitch, sacrifice fly, No hits, tie game, still a runner on second. Mets!

Engel bails out Diaz by swinging through a high inside FB nowhere near the zone otherwise it would have been bases loaded. Diaz's ERA up to 5.05 now, 25 pitch inning. Onto the 10th...

Kimbrel poised to blow another one. Cubs up 2-0, men now on 2 and 3 with one out.

Edit - he got out of it. Cubs win and tie the Cards for the division lead.
