Because it didn't.

Still not so hot from the right side. A little more seasoning will take care of that. He is going to be something to watch for years to come.

Did you hear me DD? For.Years.To.Come!

Austin
Moncada's first home run wasn't as crushed as his second, but it was to the opposite field, which is always nice to see.

I wonder if the plan right now is to keep him at 2nd as Pedroia insurance given he has missed a ton of games the last 3 yrs and is going on 33. Perhaps worst case he isn't needed and can sub for Dustin a lot in Sept?

They probably would have to transition him to another position very, very soon if they were going to use him anywhere else this year. His defense has always been behind his bat. Still would be nice for him to have some flexibility to help this team down the stretch beyond more than just 2B.

Not to distract from Moncada excitement, but why are there like 25 people at Hadlock? Were there rain delays that scared people off?

I doubt it. The Redsox don't seem to really care about that sort of thing. Xander didn't get much time at 3b before being called up in 2013 and playing the position for the WS stretch run. Mookie Betts moved from 2b to the OF with very little games played, although he played there in HS. Plus it isn't like if they move him to 3b now he'll suddenly forget how to play 2b. I'd bet money Mookie Betts could still play a decent 2b, too. It's good to be versatile.

I'd guess the only reason Moncada is still playing 2b is because it has been Redsox philosophy forever to keep a player at the toughest position possible until they prove they can't play it. If a need arises at the Major League level and they feel a player is ready to perform, that is when they change their positions. (see Bogaerts, Betts) They have shown they would be comfortable playing someone like Moncada at 3b/LF after he had maybe 5-6 games played in the minors without incident. It's not a big deal. I think we overrate how hard a time players have transitioning to new positions that are easier. Sure Hanley Ramirez happens sometimes, but it's the abnormality. Even he is doing ok at 1b.

I'd guess there is like a 20% chance Moncada would get more than a cup of coffee this year, and if he did, there was an injury on the field or the team traded Travis Shaw. Plus I think if he were called up this year, he'd probably split time in the OF and 2b/3b. But with the Hill acquisition and Chris Young coming back, and with Hernandez in AAA who is more than serviceable, where would he get time?

Going for the trifecta. Luis Alexander Basabe in the 2nd half .342/.407.605 in 86 plate appearances. 8bb/18k

In the last 12 games: 53 PA, .444/.537/.733 with 8bb/8k. 3 2bs, 2 3bs, 2 Hrs, 6/8 in SB. The strike out numbers are way down in July, hopefully that is the results of an adjustment.

Since June 1st: 146 PA, .320/.390/.547 15bb/33k. 11 doubles, 3 triples, 4 HRs and 9/11 in SB.

He really, really had an abysmal May. OPS by Month: .743, .498!, .809, and 1.118 so far in July. For the year, his OPS is now .781. The strikeouts are a real concern but it's easy to see why the scouts think he is the better Basabe despite the other one having an amazing season of his own. Alexander is just the better athlete, more power, more speed. Alejandro has the better approach and bat control. Alexander has a 27% strikeout rate and 9.2% walk rate for the year. If he can cut that k rate down to 20-22%, he's flying up some list. If not, he'll wash out in Portland. He has some serious potential, though.

Michael Chavis in the 2nd half: .208/.313/.347. 25 strikeouts in 81 PA. Considering he had 11 strikeouts in his first 91 PA of the year, I'd guess the injury changed his approach somehow. 28 of those 91 PA were after his injury those, and he only had 1 strikeout in those 28 plate appearances. At one point we (myself included) thought he was close to promotion but I'm not sure. Maybe he gets 20 at bats to end the season in Salem. His July .255/.367/.451 with 8bb/18k in 59 PA. Hopefully he can get back to whatever he was doing earlier this year, because this version of Chavis won't make it out of Portland. And yeah, I know that is a nice slash line in July, but have fun sustaining that with a 30.5% strikeout rate. He's another guy with some serious potential too.

side not: I realize they aren't in Portland. I'm saying with those strikeout rates they have currently, they'd probably peak there. Maybe get some time in AAA a la Sean Coyle.

I am wonder if Moncada throws a wrinkle in the EE question. If Moncada and AB keep racking, I don't see how they don't break camp with the sox in 2017.

What wrinkle?

That the redsox have enough offense so you don't need to spend the big bucks on EE? No such thing as too much offense.
I guess you could argue that the money should go on pitching instead, but there isn't going to be much quality pitching available as FA anyway in the next year or two is there?

Devers post-ASB:

96AB:
.365/.408/.625 (OPS 1.033)

Yeah, I think he's adjusted to Hi-A.

Since his 2HR game, Moncada has gone 1/20 with 12K
Not worried, there was once a young promising switch hitter who struck out a lot. He went on to become one of the greatest players of all time. His name was Mickey Mantle.

Moncada will be a super stud in time, bank on it

“@PawSox: Henry Owens done after 5 impressive innings allowing 2 runs on 5 hits & 2 walks with 9 strikeouts. 100 pitches (63 strikes) #PawSox down 2-1”

Jose Sermo hit 3 HRs for Greenville. He's a 25 year old so nothing to see there.

Also Dubon is looking like the player we wanted D. Marrero to be.

The Moncada bomb was a laser to right hitting lefty.

Of course, the Dogs can't pitch a lick and gave up 8 runs in the 6th.

Dante Bichette Jr hit an oppo 3-run jack as part of the damage.

His second start back in AAA the real Brian Johnson seems to have returned: 6 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K. Only 82 pitches, 67% strikes.
