Sonny Gray entered today 2-0 with a 0.71 ERA, but the old Sonny we all know and love is on the mound tonight -- a bad pickoff throw and two wild pitches puts another run on the board, 2-0 Cleveland.

Catching the Pads/Dodgers on MLB TV network right now with the San Diego feed. Fun game and strangely feels good to hear Don Orsillo calling the game.

How the hell did that happen?
He left NY and basically immediately became a top 10 pitcher in MLB, his old Vanderbilt pitching coach is the Reds pitching coach. He had good numbers for NY in road games, he just somehow couldn't handle pitching in Yankee Stadium (and it wasn't the dimensions).

Edit: Also Curt Casali catches a lot of his starts, they were college teammates and both live in Nashville and train together.

It's a cool story. Even more so that it happened once he left the Yankees

Which would be cool but Stanek in 56 straight starts, all opens, of 2.0 IP or less, did this too and is the proper record holder. There’s also not a minimum IP per start qualifier in there; Gray’s second start within this stretch was only 3 IP; it also features a 2.2 last season, a 4.0, and a pair of 4.1s.
I was wondering what the qualifying mark for this would be.

Still, a run of strong pitching, record or not.

What are the chances that Cole will leave the Yankees so he can be a Top 10 pitcher? Sinner than later preferably.

Sonny Gray was a good pitcher with Oakland (114 ERA+) then went to the Yankees and wasn't good (96 ERA+) then left and became really good again with the Reds (166 ERA+).

Great job Sonny, that's what I like to see.

Honestly, the Sonny Gray thing doesn't bother me because I feel weirdly confident that he was never gonna do this as a Yankee. It just wasn't gonna happen. Maybe it could now with empty ballparks, but the guy simply could not deal with pitching in Yankee Stadium (and I normally hate when people trot out the "can't handle NY" cliche).

Lance Lynn is just weird. He was a good but not great pitcher for many years and several teams, and suddenly he's an ace? I'm sure someone has done a deep analytical dive on what he's changed to become so good because it's a crazy story.

Joey Votto has 3 HRs through 8 games after hitting 15 last year and 12 in 2018. Hope he made some sort of adjustment, really only needs one or two great seasons to be a guaranteed HoF guy.

couldn't happen to a nicer guy...

12:59pm: The initial diagnosis is that Osuna requires Tommy John surgery, Mark Berman of FOX 26 reports on Twitter. He’ll go for a second opinion.

If indeed that major reconstruction is required, it could have major ramifications beyond the present season. Osuna is earning $10MM this year (on a full-season basis) and would be due a raise through arbitration for 2021. It’s quite possible that he’d miss all or virtually all of the ensuing season if he requires a UCL reconstruction, so the ’Stros may end up cutting him loose at the end of the season.

Good game to watch today is the Indians/Reds. Shane Bieber has been lights out for Cleveland so far.

…and the Indians lineup makes every guy they face look like Pedro Martinez, so it should be a good pitcher's duel.

Bumgarner with the three worst velocity games of his entire career in his first three starts this season, in the 87-88 MPH range. That 5/85 deal ARI gave him looking like a total washout currently.

Kimbrel gave up a single, K, double in the 9th with a 3 run lead. Ross pulled him right after and those two inherited runners did score, but the Cubs still won. Kimbrel's ERA is 32.40.

Also wild (to me, anyway) was this afternoon's NL East standings, which had the 4-1 Marlins at the top of the list with an .800 winning percentage over the 8-4 Braves (.667), and yet the Marlins were a half game back. Just strange to see the "0.5" in the first row and the " - " below it.

True, though we're now two weeks into the season. I guess the strange thing, really, is the disparity in games played, and the reasons for it.

I know it has only been three starts, but I would love to see Dylan Bundy go to the Angels and become Arrieta 2.0

Start 1- 6.2 IP 3 H 0 BB 1 ER 7 K
Start 2- 6.0 IP 4 H 2 BB 3 ER 8 K
Start 3- 9.0 IP 4 H 0 BB 1 ER 10 K

Toronto tried to put a pitcher in who wasn’t on the active 28 man roster. So just watching the next guy warmup for 10 min...

The Indians score 10 runs on 6 hits in the 7th inning tonight. That's more runs than they've had in any game this year and more hits than they've had in any of their previous 6 games (it also matches the total runs they scored in those 6 games).

Waguespack was optioned at noon today, but then Trent Thornton went on the IL and Waguespack was called up again. Apparently the ump card though did not have Waguespack on it.

Old friend Craig Kimbrel brought in for some confidence work down 12-zip.
Immediately gives up a triple.
Then a walk.
then a single.

Thats 22 earned runs in 23 innings as a Cub total. Halfway through the 3/43mill contract.
