Stastny to VGK is a bit of a curveball. Everyone thought he was on his way back to WPG after their salary dump yesterday.

B’s needs at this point are LHD and top 6 RW. Wonder if they take a run at de Haan in UFA and then go trade route (Skinner?) for the wing.

Tavares update from Staple....Isles likely out with the 8-year deal being off the table. You never totally know with Lou though. Tavares believed to have rejected a 1-year max deal offer yesterday, probably from the Leafs.

UGH, brutal, we are going to have our hands full with the Leafs and Bolts in our division going forward.

The @MapleLeafs have agreed to terms with free agent forward John Tavares on a seven-year contract. The annual average value of the contract is $11 million. #TMLtalk
Their cap is going to be problematic in a couple of years.
Their defense still sucks, so a top-heavy roster with a bad defense is a questionable team building approach.

As a (insufferable) Leafs fan I’m ecstatic about this. The cap is certainly going to be a problem. This means one of Nylander/Marner will eventually be traded to fix the D.

So they’ll win (and lose) a lot of 7-5 games. I know the modern nhl favors speed and offense over defense, but you need to have some defense.

Regardless, one of the easts best teams just got a lot better without fixing their Achilles heel. We’ll see how it works out I guess.

I would have too. That’s a bummer.

Lots of holes left to fill here.

Now that is a good old fashioned overpay

edit: Seeing the consensus is the other way around... I felt the same when Hanifin moved to CGY, thought that was a great trade for the Flames. Might well be wrong

What is St. Louis thinking?
As a Blues fan, I'm over the moon. Berglund's contract is an albatross, Sobotka is not the player he was before his KHL stint, and they kept their core forward prospects of Thomas, Kyrou, and Kostin. A team weighed down with 3 different 3rd lines went out and got a 1C and managed to shed salary.

Yep I’m thrilled. They wanted Thomas.

Seems like they are finally at the end game here. They said at the deadline they would be making a contract offer to Karlsson on 7/1. They said they did just that on 7/1 and here we are a day later with him shopping around for a new deal.

I guess they are trying to do right by their franchise player, but I feel like they are doing this backwards. They should work out a trade and then go to the player to work out an extension. They lose all leverage if he works out a deal on his own and demands that’s where he goes and will end up with pennies on the dollar.

I wonder if the Avs would consider Karlsson for the Sens draft pick.

That's a cap floor move. Islanders gonna islander. Unfortunately it gives the leads an extra $2mil in next year's crunch.
