Zach Greinke is insane and is definitely going to be a free agent after the year if he doesn't blow his arm out in the next 2 months.
43 2/3 scoreless innings in a row and counting (it doesn't count but it should be noted that Trout did score off of him during the AS game).  The guy is a beast-master.

We head to the eighteenth inning in St. Louis, after Jhonny Peralta is caught stealing to end the seventeenth.

Still 1-1.

You really need to read that new Molly Knight book. Dude is insane with his prep.

I appreciate what he's doing, but I also didn't realize how awkward he is, even after hearing about his anxiety issues and such.

Yikes, David Peralta was hit in the head (helmet, in the earhole) by a Jose Fernandez fastball. He thankfully got up on his own and walked off under his own power.

MLB Network showed it live. Pretty scary for a minute. Fernandez was pretty upset he hit him. Fortunately he got the head turned in time and the helmet took it. Could have been much worse.

And the Dbags continue to be Dbags and "retaliate" for Fernandez hitting Peralta. This is just beyond stupid.

The Cubs' bullpen is going to be what prevents them from making the playoffs this year.  They just gave up a four-spot in the 9th to lose the lead.

Edit:  Kris Bryant with the 2-run walk-off.

Shields rapidly approaching Sabathia/Verlander territory, Duda just hit one about 8000 feet to center off him.

?? He's been fine, outside of that one pitch.

I posted that in the first inning, but he's got pretty lousy road numbers this year, also lefties have been killing him. Do you think any other team would take on his contract right now? It's questionable at least.

You're right, his numbers against LHH are troubling. His road FIP/xFIP do indicate that his crappy ERA is high though, he's been pitching about the same on the road, he's just not getting lucky.

Not sure about the contract though, but given the choice of the 3 contracts, I'd probably take on Shields over Verlander & CC.

Oh, no question, I just said he was approaching that territory. I overstated a bit in the wake of Duda's 450+ foot HR and the bad things I've been reading about Shields lately, but it is a game thread. :)

The Mets are about to lose a terrible one as Familia comes back from a 20 minute rain delay to surrender two out singles to Norris and Kemp before Upton blasts a 3-run homer to give the Padres an 8-7 lead.  The Mets led this game 7-1 entering the seventh inning.

Crazy game between SD and the Mets this afternoon. It started with the backdrop of the Gomez deal having fallen through (Flores didn't start and has yet to play) as well as SD knowing there's a good chance a bunch of their players will be moved by tomorrow. The Mets were up 7-1 after 6, but a Norris grand slam cut it to 7-5 going to the 9th.

Edit: Remagellan filled in the next part while I was typing, but now the even crazier part is that they are back in a rain delay before the bottom of the 9th, they can't get the tarp on the field, the field might be unplayable, this is the last time they're meeting this year, and of course SD's roster may look very different if they make it up at a later date.

Now the game is in a rain delay before the bottom of the 9th and both the field and the weather report looks like crap.  Now what?  I was surprised that they came back to play in the top of the ninth when the game was delayed with 2 outs and no one on and the Mets up 7-5....that would have made sense.

They come back to play in a downpour and Upton hits a 3 run dong....I think the mets might get screwed on this.

Carlos Carrasco is a very good pitcher. Complete game, 2 hits allowed, 1 BB-7K, with only 1 run given. When he's on, he's a top 10 pitcher.

Awesome end to the Mets Nats game with Flores hitting a walk off home run in the 12th inning. One of the most emotional reactions by a team I've seen in a regular season game. What a wild 48 hours for Wilmer and the Mets.

Edit: hyperbole

That Flores HR was one of the most awesome baseball moments of the season.  Good for him, the Mets and their fans.
