Horrible. That whole 2007 team will always have a special place in my heart.

I hope his kids get through this ok.

Not sure how many other Sox players caught more shit here on SoSH, or became running punch lines to various jokes than Julio Lugo, but damn, this is fucking sad. RIP Julio.

45? Damn. Makes you question your own mortality.

Thanks for your .962 OPS in the 2007 WS, Julio. RIP.

Tomorrow would have been his birthday.

Shocking, shocking news... Wow..

He also looked really healthy (not out of shape as a lot of ex players)

Wow, that is really awful. RIP Lugo... I loved that 2007 team, and though he did get a lot of shit, he was a major contributor in that postseason.

Just another reminder that people can carry heart defects (or other ailments) their whole lives without knowing or showing any signs of it until one day, poof. Doesn't matter how in or out of shape the person might be. Still sucks to see someone go so young.

He never lived up to the expectations of what in retrospect was not that big of a contract, but he had his moments in a Red Sox uniform, and of course contributed to a ring. RIP

RIP.

Is he the first Sox WS champ from this era to pass away?

That sucks.

Nearly 1300 hits in the big leagues and he hit .385 in the World Series in 2007.

Boston traded him for Chris Duncan, who sadly has also passed away in 2019 from brain cancer.

Frank Castillo appeared for the 04 Sox, but doubt anyone would consider him part of the team. Lugo is the first of the modern Red Sox players to appear in the WS for the Sox who has passed, as far as I can tell.

Well shit, this is just terrible. I too always remember his winning hit and his excitement in the Mother's Day game. Choosing my avatar as a picture of his presentation as a Red Sox was kind of random, but I always had a funny little affection for him, and it's so strange to think that he's gone.

He also scored the winning run on Manny's ALDS bomb against the Angels. I always remember him spreading his arms like wings as he came around third base (visible briefly around the :10 mark in the video, and more fully at :55). Guy seemed to just have a lot of joy to be there.

Thanks for this one. I'll always remember the joyous wing spreading of the runner rounding third, but would have struggled to remember it was Lugo doing it.

RIP. Just way, way too young.

Somewhere we have a 10-year old's t-shirt with Lugo's and Lars Anderson's autographs. (maybe 2011 ST?)

Damn shame....so young. Very sad.

I will never forget Lugo just BUSTING down the line on The Mother's Day Miracle game, and pure joy at first base....

For all the flak Lugo received-- no one can ever say he didn't give a shit. The guy nearly jumped out of the park rounding first as the winning run scored. In a game in mid-may after signing a nice contract.

He played to win the game, even if he flailed at a few sliders that we thought he coulda laid off.

RIP Julio .. you played the game the right way.
