San Diego is going to be the 2011 Eagles of baseball. That team has to have 0 shot of winning the world series without Soto, 0 shot with, but hey, go nuts I guess.

I'm not even sure they're a playoff team.

They're firmly in the wildcard right now, and the combination of acquiring Soto and getting Tatis back would certainly make them a threat. They've got a pretty solid rotation.

So SD is going to spend about 100m on three players? Or let Soto walk in two years?

Machado can opt out after next season. He would be turning down a 5/160 deal by opting out but he can probably get more than that if he has another season like this one next year.

Miami (oh, Miami!)
Since San Diego's trade for Soto et al., and the emptying of their farm system's top prospects, they've gone (as of Aug 3):
6-9. (The Sox have gone 6-8 FWIW)

Soto's done well (.909 OPS), but Josh Bell isn't hitting at all (.418 OPS), nor is Drury (.674 OPS), and Hader's been lit up in his limited appearances (8.10 ERA.)

Don't forget Tatis Jr. getting suspended 80 games for taking PEDs to treat a rash. The lesson is never try.

Well, they still have the wildcard spot, and with only one team close to them at the moment have good odds of getting into the post season. But if they were hoping their acquisitions would move them up in the standings or challenge for the division lead, that hasn't happened yet.

The Padres just try so hard. I don’t know AJ Preller personally or anything like that, but based on everything he’s done since San Diego hired him, it’s as though he’s on some obsessive quest to get the Padres - one of the sport’s true sad sacks - to be taken seriously and take down the Dodgers and Giants in the process.

I mean, that’s his job, right? He is super aggressive, unusually so, but otherwise I don’t really get this post.

Yeah, but he takes it to another level. And - so far! - he has so little to show for it.

But yeah, you’re also correct.

I mean, I'd rather be a Padres fan than a Rockies or Marlins or A's fan.

At least the Preller tries to improve his team.
Well sure. It’s also possible I am just envious because I miss the days when the Red Sox operated like this. (Well, not like this, but when we had something to talk about more exciting than Eric Hosmer and Tommy Pham.) (Please do not start talking about any of the Red Sox’ recent moves in reply to this post.) I probably would have described Theo Epstein as similarly obsessive at one point.

I do wonder if there is a plan beyond GET ALL THE PLAYERS, and he’s definitely made some extremely questionable moves, but I’m sure the Sons of Sean Burroughs are pleased on the whole.

Shit happens and not every player is going to work out, but I like front offices that take big swings and tries to improve their teams with stars.

Soto was a last second scratch tonight -- the rest of the team had already taken the field -- due to back tightness.

So, what’s up with Soto? 223/389/359 with SD. Overall, this year he’s got a 456 slugging. Hard hit, line drive, EV all down the last few years. Any reason for concern?

My theory remains that he is too selective and that prevents him from collecting as many extra base hits as he probably should.

Moved from the Machado thread:

I just haven’t really seen the MFY’s actually really show commitment to positional players. They tend to get hyped then traded (either after a year or two or prior to a ML promotion).
Judge, Gleyber, Sanchez. If they have guys they like enough, they commit to them.

And we’re talking about Soto here- he’ll be young. Jon Abbey’s “Stanton and Judge” defense isn’t convincing- Stanton hasn’t been what they had hoped, Judge will be 33 and likely battling injuries and performance decline. It’s not wild at all to see a fit. Sure, about 6 other teams would be in hard on him but if NY wants him, they’ll beat the others.
The current version of NY will go after premium FAs if and only if they think they are an essential fit and a huge upgrade from their other potential options, internal and external: Cole, Judge, Rodon. They don't go after premium FAs at positions where they have prospects that they love, like Correa/Turner/Seager etc. with middle infielders the last two seasons, as they are trying to give Peraza and Volpe a shot.

So NY's OF prospects? They have four they really like: Dominguez, Spencer Jones, Pereira and the newly signed 17 year old Brando Mayea. If these guys don't continue to progress by the time Soto is a FA, then it's a bit more possible, but even then Soto isn't a great fit for NY. His power isn't really to RF, he is not a good defender and would have to play NY's large LF, at a time when Cashman has really emphasized team and individual defense. If we were talking deals in the 6/150 or 8/200 range, I could still maybe see it, but Soto is going to get $500M+ from a team that values him more than NY.

Miami (oh, Miami!)
With the news of SD extending Machado, this trade becomes even more interesting. SD has two years of control of Soto left.

- Hold, play and lose to FA? That's a 3 year window for most of their minor league depth. One year is already gone.

- Play, then trade to recoup minor talent? That's a two year window (or less) with one year already gone.

- Play and sign to epic contract?

In that last bucket we have to consider: View: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1hUvYNZODpusJEJQm41EPUDHXi-fSWtWmxY54X4OW3Q4/edit#gid=1520401900
