In the spirit of ChrisFont9's Yusniel Padrón-Artiles thread, crawling through Baseball-Reference I have just become aware of a Mexican pitcher named Jorge Rodriguez.

Sox Prospects has him as our 37th best prospect. I had never heard of him. Apparently we acquired him as an IFA out of Ciudad Juarez as a 17 year old for $37,500.

The 5'11" left-hander was decent-to-good in the DSL in 2018: 13 starts, 3-1, 3.41 ERA, 8 K/9, 2 BB/9.

But this season, he was the ace of the GCL Red Sox as an 18 year old: his 11 appearances seem to have been half starts, half piggy backs, but he posted a 6-2 record, a 1.91 ERA, an 11.1 K/0, a 1.7 BB/9, and allowed only 35 hits in 47 innings. This earned a promotion to Greenville, where he got into one game and did fine.

He doesn't throw all that hard (Sox Prospects: "Fastball: Sits 88-92 mph with good movement and excellent control."), and doesn't appear to have any particularly remarkable secondary pitches (yet). He'll likely need to gain some velocity as he moves into his early 20s to become a real prospect, but I'm intrigued, and I thought we should keep an eye on him given the paucity of starting pitching in the system.
