My first binkie in this forum, Joe Gunkel, is now off to the Sons of Mark Belanger. I'd been wanting to start something on Jordan Procyshen anyway, and with the trade, I thought the time had come. So...

From milb.com:

  • Full Name: Jordan Procyshen
  • Age: 22 (March 11, 1993)
  • Birthplace: Calgary, AB, Canada
  • Bats/Throws: L/R Ht: 5' 10" Wt: 185
  • Draft: Round 14 (2014, BOS)
  • School: Northern Kentucky

The "school" reference is a little misleading - "Pro" spent only one year at Northern Kentucky after two at a Juco in Colorado. As is noted above, he's a Canadian (from Calgary - here's a link to his local paper's coverage of his draft experience), so he hasn't had the same amount of time on the diamond that people from warmer climates would have at his age. He does come across as someone who really, really likes baseball - his Twitter feed is really bland, and consists mostly of Sox organization retweets, but a fair number of the tweets he originates are along the lines of "love this game!"

Sox Prospects doesn't have a lot on him: "Canadian catcher with a stocky build. Showed good home run power in college."

Pro has done pretty well in his brief minor league career. He started in Lowell last year, where (per Baseball Reference) he played 19 games, with a .339 OBP, a .315 slugging percentage (three doubles, no homers), and 7 walks against 6 Ks. He was promoted to Greenville late in the season, and appeared in nine games, with a double, a home run, three walks and 8 Ks in 33 plate appearances. So far this year in Greenville, Jordan has 150 plate appearances. He's hitting .277 with a .365 OBP and .346 slugging (six doubles, one home run), 23 Ks and 13 walks. Defensively, in 33 games, he's committed 8 errors (!), been charged with two passed balls, and thrown out 16 of 45 runners attempting to steal (36%).

If any of you folks in/around Greenville can add some in-person observations, I'd appreciate knowing more!

Wow Mwonow! I was looking to start a thread on a prospect and had just about decided on Procyshen. Thanks for starting it and I leave this one up to you.

He seems interesting when you look at just the numbers offensively. I doubt he will stick at catcher as, if, he moves up.

Time for an upgrade - Jordan's now ALL STAR Pro!

From Cuzitt's minor league report:

The Drive’s fantastic start to the season was rewarded with a shocking eight representatives to the South Atlantic League All-Star game. Catcher Jordan Procyshen, third baseman Rafael Devers, shortstop Javier Guerra and outfielder Derek Miller were all named starters. Catcher Ben Moore and infielder Mauricio Dubonrounded out the six everyday players named to the team. Mario Alcantara and Michael Kopech were named to the pitching staff for the South squad.

Link, though I suspect everyone in this forum has read the piece: http://sonsofsamhorn.com/baseball/teams/al-east/boston-red-sox/minor-league-report-612-cannons-of-the-outfield/

After seeing Toothy's new bit on Adam Lau, I felt a little sheepish. Time for a Pro update!

When we last checked in - midway through the 2015 season - pro was an All Star in Greenville. He then moved onto Salem for the back half of 2015 - and struggled to a .209 average (.309 OBP, and just .243 SLG). He was better in 2016 with a 249/304/376 slash. Promoted to Portland this year, Pro will get to work with some of the Sox more interesting ml pitchers, especially in the bullpen, which includes Williams Jerez, Jake Cosart and Luis Ysla (all mentioned in the Bullpen thread) and others who get talked about here, including Trey Ball, Teddy Stankiewicz and Ty Buttery.

Like a lot of people, I expected Pro to get lapped by Austin Rei, but so far, the two seem to be viewed pretty equivalently: Pro is currently #53 on the SoxProspects list, and Rei is #54.

Interesting article on Sox catching prospects on MassLive: http://www.masslive.com/redsox/index.ssf/2018/04/boston_red_sox_prospects_2018.html?et_rid=1847465927&s_campaign=108stitches:newsletter

It mentions five prospects, but not Pro. It does mention Austin Rei, who appears to have the big half of a platoon in Portland (6 games started, vs. 2 for Pro). The piece also talks about Jhon Nunez, who's in Salem, saying "look for this guy to move to Double A quickly."

Seems like Pro is getting passed by other prospects...

Yes--thanks much for the link! I was disappointed when he was released this summer. I'll be interested to see if there's a place in coaching for him at whatever point his playing days are over.
