I'd like Whitlock in the bullpen when he comes back. Assumes Sale or someone else is ready.

Interesting, wonder if Arauz clears waivers? If not, it leaves Jeter Downs as the only IF depth on the 40-man. Downs and Arauz are about the exact same age, and Downs is now at 189/285/350 in 600 AAA plate appearances.

Ultiantely, Arauz isn’t much of a loss and I’m sure they can find a comparable player if they need one. Although it seems like a pitcher or one of the catchers might have been more expendable at this point in time.

Wiscansin, by way of Attleboro
This is going to be a dumb take, but I wish they had more of a plan with Whitlock. They kinda yo-yoed him. I know he came up as a starter. Yankees. Arm troubles. Rule five. Found success. That's incredible.

His management this year is weird. They never decided he was a starter. They just said "we needed a starter".

Could've happened either way, but it seems really fucking happenstance the way this year happened for the guy. Hope it's minor.

Every move was out of necessity. Not necessarily long term success. At least the way it seems to me.

Also, could be the wrong thread if not appropriate. Move accordingly.

I have a hard time believing that his injury has fuck-all to do with how they've used him.

They didn't yo-yo him at all. They had six potential starters to open the season and he was chosen as the odd man out. Then when chucklehead Houck couldn't travel to Toronto, they swapped them. Whitlock has been a starter ever since. He made four relief appearances over 2.5 weeks (practically a starter's schedule), then he was in the rotation. That's just a yo as far as I can tell. The long term goal all along has been Whitlock in the rotation. I think the only reason for the hesitation at the start of the year was an attempt to control his innings, not because they were unsure of how to use him.

I’m sad only because whoever came up with “Werewolves of London” whenever he made a play provided me with many minutes of SoSH delight.

I wish they could develop better young OF post-Beni that RobRef
Of the five outfielders on SoxProspects.com's top 20, the only one above AA is Duran. And the one at AA just arrived at Portland on Tuesday. Which basically means there are some in the pipeline, they're just not especially close yet. In the meantime, it's retreads like Refsnyder.

Edit to add: In my haste of searching for players listed as outfielders, I overlooked #19 on the list: Ryan Fitzgerald. He's listed as UT. So I guess there are six in the top 20, and two above AA.

Then if Fitzy can play corner Of, why not promote him to 40 instead of RobRef?
Could be any number of reasons. They may think Refsnyder is better (his AAA numbers are better). They may value his major league experience. Or, they many not want to lose Fitzgerald as it is likely they will need this 40-man roster spot for someone else very soon.

I think this is it. Refsnyder is most likely a short-term move. Up as a RHH against a couple LHP, then shipped out again once Duran is eligible to be recalled or when Kike returns from the IL. This sort of thing is exactly why Refsnyder is in the organization.
