Ferrell plays the "animated buffoon" really well, but Madden was only animated, far from a buffoon. It'll be interesting to see whether Ricky Bobby can pull this off.

EDIT: I read the other day that right after the game in which Darryl Stingley was injured, Madden (who of course was the opposing coach that day) went to the hospital and visited him and was surprised to see that no one from the Pats was coming to visit Stingley before they left to return to New England. So, Madden called someone from the Pats, and the team's charter plane, which was getting ready for take-off, turned around and returned to the gate.

If you were told beforehand that Heath Ledger was cast to play the Joker or Christian Bale was going to be Dick Cheney, you'd think those were ridiculous choices as well. This has the makings of a tremendous makeup/dramatic effort if done well.

David O. Russell has an excellent track record including period pieces that require huge makeup efforts like American Hustle, I trust this effort on the face of it.

It appears that the Ferrell/O. Russell Madden project is different from the Brady/Gavin O'Connor miniseries linked back in February. The Ferrell project would focus specifically on the creation of the Madden game while the Brady project would be about Madden's whole life. Hard to tell if there's a market for two Madden projects, so it might come down to whichever gets into production first.
