You are young, strong, and have tons of support.  Stage 1; you're well on your way to beating this...Be sure to rest during the chemo.  Best wishes, John.

Just got a breaking news text about this ... all the best to JF for the speedy recovery I'm sure he'll make.  Thanks again for 2013.

Just came back from a meeting to see this. Thoughts and prayers to you. John. Kick its butt and don't its name.

The Jimmy Fund telethon is next week. You'll get a donation in your honor, John.

All last year we were obsessed with my husband's prostate cancer. It had a happy ending, using the best surgical techniques available. Farrell will get the best treatment available, and will be back to looking like Superman sooner than later. Early discovery is an amazing gift/accident. Ruth Bader Ginsburg seems to have survived pancreatic cancer, which is usually deadly and took my sister this winter, because it was discovered by a checkup CT scan, which she has to have as follow-up on her treatment for colon cancer before that.
We say that someone is a "cancer" in the clubhouse. Think of that, that's the worst thing you could compare someone to, even worse than Hitler maybe.

It is a bad thing to say.  I hate it the most, actually.

My Mom has lymphoma - a different kind than it seems John has.  Hers is not curable, but grows so slowly that she can treat it with radiation and Rituxan if her regular PET scans show any growth. Nevertheless, when she was first diagnosed 5 years ago, I felt like my world was crashing down.  It's just so goddamned scary to hear the word Cancer.  My Dad also beat prostate cancer, ITP, about 8 years ago now. That one was also terrifying.  And last week, my family buried my beautiful Aunt after she battled for 16 months vs. Pancreatic Cancer.  John, you've got the whole Sox nation, and frankly, the whole world behind you.  Every cancer victim does, because it spares no family.

I was diagnosed with Stage III breast cancer last year. Yes, cancer sucks. And, chemo sucks but it works. Hope Farrell's side effects are mild and that he can rest up for next year.

Wanted to thank Sox Doc for the factual assessment. Makes SoSH what it is. Wish Farrell the best. Lost both parents to C due to late detection. Sounds like he got lucky. Better than being good sometimes.

Thank God for the hernia surgery. Early cancer sucks more than enough, even still. Be well, and become well for good, John.

Gotta say, the best news is Stage 1. I had stage 1 breast cancer in 2000 and here I am 15 years later, as feisty as ever. Make sure you get afternoon naps and healthy food. IMO Chemo is not as bad as people make it out to be.

GO JOHN.

Man, this is sucky news.  I wish we could round up all the cancer and all of ISIS and put them in a room together and hope they wipe each other out, because each of them might be the only thing as shitty as the other.

#1: stay positive. If you think it will beat you, it will.
#2: eat. You'll need the energy and weight.
#3: knock it out of the park buddy!

Lymphoma survivor here. Diagnosed with Hodgkins in '94. Treatment has come a long way since then, but I made it through and so will Farrell. And he'll be stronger for the experience in a bizarre sort of way. Sending good thoughts his and his family's way.

#9's greatest hit was the Jimmy Fund and putting the spotlight on cancer.
No World Series Championships. But how many lives have been changed?
Contributions are what make a a difference.
Makes what was 50-50-> a beatable form of cancer in 2015.

Beat it, John.

“@JMastrodonato: Joe Kelly is a focused dude. Somehow didn’t find out about Farrell’s cancer diagnosis until AFTER he pitched tonight. News came at 430 p.m.”

Best of luck to John with his battle.

I wanted to share a quick story on how much of a stand up guy John is.  I am good friends w/ a long time part-time employee of the Red Sox.  Even though he has been there for 3 championships, the rule w/ the part-timers was they would not get rings. They got some other cool stuff, but no rings.  Anyway, this guy works at the park every game day, has interactions with John, some players, and the media.  John caught wind that he didn't have a ring. Well, my buddy goes into work one day and was told John wants to see him in his office. Thinking he screwed something up, he went in a bit scared.  Turns out John pulled some strings to get him a ring. The one shared by very few members who were part of all 3 championships.

This is the kind of guy who deserves to beat this.

Thanks for sharing that story Tony. I don't think any of us ever questioned whether John was a good guy or not, but that wasn't something he had to do.

Good luck John, I was diagnosed with NHL last September and R-CHOP is easy. The anti-nausea drugs are way stronger than that amount of chemo and there's only a few days per cycle where the fatigue is hard. So lucky they caught it early because they grow so fast it could be stage 3 or 4 and attached to worrying organs by the time the weight loss becomes notable. Still even stage 4 NHLs like mine have over a 90% cure rate and hopefully I'm cured and done with treatment now less than a year later.
