Same.

We just traded the future.
They weren’t gonna franchise him and Brady’s the best QB in the league with no signs of slowing. If you think Brady goes 3-4 more years, what choice was there?

I highly doubt the Patriots sign Kaepernick. They bring in players to workout all the time. Granted, bringing in Kaepernick for a workout before today would have drawn a lot of attention, and therefore if they had interest in him perhaps there's an argument that can be made that they did not want to bring him in for a workout due to the ensuing circus it would have created. However, I don't see them signing a player who hasn't been on a field since last December without a workout.

I believe this is the first shoe to drop, and that the pick they acquired may be used in a package to bring in a player before the deadline tomorrow. Maybe a linebacker or a DE.

I think part of the issue with Kaep is you'd need to completely redo the offense on the fly if Brady goes down because they are about as polar opposite as QBs can get. Granted, they did the same with Jacoby for 2 games last year, and I'm sure McDaniels could come up with some interesting wrinkles with a guy as mobile as Kaep, but let's just pray for TB12's health...
Which means pray for Solder, Thuney, Andrews, Mason, Cannon, and Waddle’s health.

Need Jimmy gone to get a Brady extension/restructure done. Maybe there's a benefit doing it now as opposed to after the season. There was no way Jimmy was staying unless Brady retired at the end of this season. I would still keep him though in case Brady gets hurt.
If Jimmy’s as good as we all thought, and thats the case, you trade the 41-year-old in the off-season to a team looking for a stopgap to keep them in contention.

I love 12, but he’s 40. This makes zero sense unless Jimmy’s looked awful behind the scenes.

Consider these factors
--Pats were never going to have 2 big money contracts at QB.
--Brady showing no signs of decline.
--Pats need desperately to restock the top end talent on the roster.
--SF needs a QB

You add them up and this makes sense. If Pats keep the pick, they'll get a 1st round talent for a player that had no impact on the current team besides handling a clipboard. I'll take that deal any day.

Crazy notion: might the Pats throw the Vikings a 5th for Teddy Bridgewater? I remember New England brought him in when he was a super-touted draft prospect they had zero need for, "just because".

What this tells you for certain in that Giselle is not in charge of when Tom retires and he isn't anytime soon (save some bad injury)

This is a weird weird turn of events. For all the reasons already mentioned in the thread...

That said, Kaepernick being available is a serious mental exercise in BB thought processes. On one hand, BB will take someone with a reputation under the premise that he can contribute or be cut loose. He's got a history here with Dillon, Moss, etc. On the other hand, he avoid players who are will be a distraction like the plague. Ocho came here and reverted to being the athlete formerly known as Johnson. Martellus came here and basically kept things quite while be harmlessly entertaining for the media. Is Kaepernick capable of turning off the noise and just playing football?

Damn the possibilities are endless.

To those saying Kaepernick is the best QB available - he may not be the best QB available to the Pats given Hoyer is now free. But if the Patriots wanted him - why wasn't he included in the trade? Can they sign him to a minimum contract that is less than what SF was paying him?

Seriously, mental gymnastics enough here to cause a headache...

Love it.
I'll love it even more if BB picks up hoyer for free since the 49ers might cut him now.

Just a question about the mechanics of such things: If it indeed will be Hoyer, why go through the release portion of the deal, instead of just adding him to the deal?

Salary cap?

There’s nothing that suggests he has 3-4 more years. We’ll be lucky if he’s league-average at 42/43. This is a baffling and insane move when you’ve onsider how difficult it is to find a long-term quality starter in the NFL.

I’m guessing it was part of the deal to some degree. They’d agree to release Hoyer. If we traded for Hoyer we’d have to take the current contract. If they cut him, they pay him the buyout and we can sign him for scrap money. Having said that, its an uneducated guess. Clarity should come on that soon.
That's interesting. Also, Pats don't have very much cap space left.

Vikings still consider Teddy their starter of the future if he can get healthy.

I’m not sure there’s a Brady restructure left right now. They’re gonna have to start paying him like a real elite QB, which is one of the reasons franchising Jimmy wasn’t going to work.

Or bill just realized he is still the best or one of the top 2 QBs in football and if they can protect him, no reason to think he won't be for a while longer
that is underatable but beyond 2018 can brady be the same qb jimmy g wouild had kept u top 5 even after brady is gone because if u have no qb like denver does the best u can do is 7-9 8-8 even so waiting utill march was the best move this is saying gilmore was a bad move because now u will fran butler and will he want to be in ne past 2018

Yes. His vet status means that if he's cut he doesn't have to go on waivers so he's free to sign anywhere.
Thanks. Makes sense now. And without putting him in the deal means the Pats aren't responsible for any part of the contract he signed with SF, true?

Shrewd. Now Pats sign Kaep who agrees to drop his suit if every team that didn't sign him is forced to forfeit a first rounder. 49ers finish dead last and we own the first two picks in the draft.

I kinda figured BB would find a way to land the top three picks (or at least three of the top five), but I'm okay with this.

Oddly makes sense to me. They kept him for eight games into the regular season - eight valuable games of insurance and were able to move him for what (apparently) they would have gotten for him eight games ago.

Maximizes value to the team. Twas. Ever. Thus.

There's absolutely no way of proving that. If Bill thought Jimmy G was Tom Brady 2.0, he wouldn't have traded him.

I don't get this from the Niners' perspective. Why rent JG for a year and give up a high draft pick when they can finish the year 2-14, draft Darnold and keep their second rounder.

How much does a top 5 pick make this year compared to what JG will likely be due?
I don't follow CFB closely but apparently Darnold's stock is dropping a bit. And Niners have tons of cap room, won't be good for another year or two, so I think the logic here would be if you really think a guy is the guy, it's worth it. Plus no guarantee you get the pick.

Yeah, what paulinmyrbeach said -- he's got $6 million left on his contract. Presumably, the Patriots didn't want to pay that much. Or they don't want him.

What's going to be even greater is when Brady wins SB MVP #5, retires, and BB signs JG to a long term deal in the offseason...

Ok, I don't actually think that'll happen but, at this point, who the hell knows

I can’t pin the tweet but someone just posted (blue check) that cutting Hoyer means the Pats don’t have to take on the prorated portion ($3M) contract. Can sign him for minimum.

I get it, “In BB we trust.” Any other analysis = no point.

Saying with certainty Brady will be league average in 2 years ignores way to much information. Hell, he should be league average now and he isn't. He is the best QB in the league right now and showing zero signs of anything different. Posting over and over that the team mortgaged the future does nothing here. Want to analyze? Do so with evidence based info and draw conclusions.

Drewdawg, move along. Engaging H78 and baiting isn't helping anything.

More cap room when? Probably less cap room this year. Someone will replace Jimmy on the 53 (almost certainly a new QB) who will be more highly paid than he was.

Next year, theoretically if you think they were going to sign him but they never were (as we now know).

Much, much, much rather have Kaepernick than Hoyer.
This is a joke right? Both are questionable at best as NFL starters. One is surrounded by media controversy and has no experience in your system. The other has years of experience with your offense. And without the benefit of training camp and preseason games you’d choose Kaepernick? That’s just plain old stupid.
If you think they should pick kap for moral or righteous reasons than fine I guess. But from a football point of view that’s just stupid.

This case was made many times this offseason. It makes complete logical sense. If I was running the Pats as a Front Office Football franchise, this is what I would do.

The flaw in this plan is, and always has been, that Tom Brady is a special case. He’s had the greatest career in NFL history. Bob Kraft considers him a son. The Patriots simply weren’t going to shove him out the door when he was still playing well. Never mind after another MVP caliber season where he’s the teams most indispensable player. Add in that BB has a somewhat short shelf life as coach, and it just was never going to happen. If they weren’t moving on from Brady after this year, there weren’t good options for keeping Jimmy G.

Still somewhat arguable whether the difference between a second round pick and a comp pick is worth giving up eight games worth of injury insurance given the importance of the position.

one of them sucks wild ass, the other had a better QBR in his last season than like half the starters in the league today. your politics are showing.

Yes, it's a joke. I frequently perfect my stand-up routines on sports message boards.

One has actual physical tools, lead his team to a Super Bowl, and is still young enough to have some upside. The other is 32-years-old and has shown, over and over, to be horrendously mediocre at best and is most adept as positioning a team for the #1 pick.

I don't give a rat's ass about the "media controversy" and I can't see why Bill would. It's not like Kaep is a DV offender or something actually horrible.

And Kaepernick (theoretically) wouldn't be starting and would be prepared by the coaches. Hoyer has shown you what he is.
