This makes no sense
It absolutely makes no sense.... Because we don't have but a fraction of the information BB does. As always, the lesson is... let things play out and we will see what BB does next. We HAVE to have a backup, and obviously BB knows this.

If you like 2018 better than 2017, take the 2017 first and trade it back into 2018 for a first plus...
If there truly was a 1st on the table, it's weird.

But we just don't know what we don't know. Maybe there were contract negotiations and they fell apart. Maybe they are looking at another deal (because of Hightower or Hogan or whatever) that will make it impossible to franchise him next year under the cap and that was their plan, and now they can't.

Really interesting (odd?) timing, especially after tossing Brissett back.

Perhaps there was something going on with Brady's future in offseason which has now passed?

Perhaps this is part of a sequence that nets them an impact defender?

Perhaps being willing to pay Jimmy G was always a bluff and this was last chance to cash him in (but then, why not around the draft last year? Could offers really have been lower than for, say Trubisky?)

Really surprised at all this.

WTF? They could have had 2 firsts, or at least a first and a second from Cleveland in April. And not even a LB, but a pick?

Here
So, given Cleveland’s meh draft offer, I get this move, just not so much the Brissett move.

I forget who but someone lost a bet to me and owes the Jimmy Fund money. JG was never bringing back a first, never mind multiple firsts.

Or they send someone like Burkhead or Lewis to a RB needy team then send that pick to a team for defensive help.
This post from the potential trade thread could use a little love right now.

Maybe.

Here's your current backup QB: http://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/8411727/old-dominion-monarchs-taylor-heinicke-throws-division-record-730-yards

Taylor Heinicke threw for a Division I-record 730 yards on Saturday as Old Dominion rallied to beat New Hampshire 64-61 in the Colonial Athletic Association opener for both teams.

Heinicke set school records for completions (55), attempts (79), and passing yards (730) as New Hampshire (2-2), an FCS school, dominated the CAA's top-ranked defense throughout the first three quarters, taking a 54-38 lead into the fourth.

Yeah, or maybe the reason we were all going "what the hell is going on here" over the off season is that all of the supposed trades that Belichick was passing up were bullshit rumors?

If they aren't going to franchise him, this really is the last chance to get value for him. There may well be no more to it than that.

Even if a 1st was on the table they took a wait and see approach on Brady who is 1. playing well and 2. clearly intending to stick around. Now they know perhaps Gillmore isn't a long term plus and can retain Butler.

Wait, get info, possibly lose 5-20 draft position spots as SF 2 will be high.

The timing is obviously confusing, but this might be a sign that they do not see G as some world beater -- IOW Brady drops the team is dead with G or with random QB.

Who knows how accurate that was? Jimmy G is a great backup but he's going to be due a significant raise, that clearly factored into their thinking. That and Brady's apparent lifetime supply of avocados.

I'm honestly fascinated to see how he plays in SF.
I am as well. I have field passes to the SF game this Sunday. I will try to report back what I see.

It should be close to a first round pick.

If Brady goes down, they are effectively conceding any possibility of repeating. Now that may not be much of a concession, but with Jimmy G there was always the hope, even if unrealistic.

(Hoyer, by the way, has had an abysmal year, so please don’t bring him up as anything other than a back-up who might get you through a couple games).

This.

Very hard to "game thread" the NFL trade deadline. And I am absolutely guilty as charged as well. Thanks for the perspective, BaseballJones.

Um, ok.

I would have preferred the 12 pick and another second or two...
To be more clear, you have no idea that this was real.

I'm sure BB turned down a first plus then said fuck it and took a second 3 months later.

With the bye, the team has 2 weeks to come up with potential backup replacements not already with the team.

Obviously, the rumors before the season were all bullshit.

I guess the best news from all this, is the Pats get to have Brady as the starting QB for the next couple of years (without having to pay the backup tens of millions of dollars).

wow this was kraft telling bill b u are never getting of brady pure and silper welp krik couins to denver
Or bill just realized he is still the best or one of the top 2 QBs in football and if they can protect him, no reason to think he won't be for a while longer

C'mon ... you think that trading a backup for multiple firsts plus a player could have been made up?

Once Brady is cooked by next season (unless he’s the first in the history of ever to defy Father Time), hopefully they can magically snag a decent stopgap in the 2018 draft. Just a monumentally dumb move, but then again I’m not Belichick so I’m probably horrifically wrong.

It’ll be nice to see Jimmy G actually get a chance somewhere, though, despite the fact that he was the best chance at life after Brady. ¯\(°_O)/¯

The last 38 times this board has unanimously hated a deal (starting w Nomar and ending with Jamie Collins), team won title. Cue the duckboats.

Kaepernick is far and away the best guy out there not currently on a roster. Will be interesting.
As a Niners fan I'm stoked by finally having a legit QB, but I think Bill would mold Kap into a great QB and he should be the move.

In fact it wasn’t, as I cited to on the next page.

As someone who mentioned Hoyer earlier, OF COURSE if he came back in the deal it would be as a stopgap back-up. As in...for a catastrophic injury to Brady. We have nobody behind TB12 right now and Hoyer knows the system.

Weren't they being offered more in the offseason when Schefter remained adamant Jimmy wouldn't be traded? Strange.
Ian R says no, just a 2nd +. We'll see what other reports are, since there were definitely reports last year of multiple 1s on the table. Maybe we'll never know?

Kaepernick is far and away the best guy out there not currently on a roster. Will be interesting.
Pretty damn good QB just sitting there and waiting for a chance. But alas he’s blackballed for his views.
Yep. This is a test. Most all of the NFL has failed it. Will BB/Kraft?

Signing Kaep would be hysterical, but he’d have to be willing to take like 1.5 mil for half a season.

I don't get this from the Niners' perspective. Why rent JG for a year and give up a high draft pick when they can finish the year 2-14, draft Darnold and keep their second rounder.

How much does a top 5 pick make this year compared to what JG will likely be due?

It's painful to look back on all the virtual ink that was spilled here to try explain Belichick's motives for not doing deals that was never on the table.

I think it would be spectacular if Belichick signed Kaepernick tomorrow. The press conference alone would be worth all the ESPN blathering.

"Coach, are you worried about Kaepernick's politics?" "I'm just here to coach football"

"Coach, do you think he will kneel pre-game during the anthem" "I'm not Nostradumus, I can't predict the future. I'm just worried about today's practice"

"Coach, will this be a distraction?" "Will what be a distraction?"
