Go to the 15:10 mark on the video, where it's 3rd and 5 and watch the whole sequence. Bettis clearly has faulty memory of those events. LOL

There was an "official" time out for a measurement, but NE never called timeout. And the guy that went over to the sidelines to talk to BB was Ted Johnson, not a NT or whoever Bettis alleged: "“Who normally goes to the sideline on timeouts? The defensive captains, right? They told the nose guard … they pulled him to the sideline. Big 400-pound guy, he don’t want to go to the sideline and come all the way back,” Betts said. “What he want to go to the sideline for? They yelling, made him go to the sideline and I always thought ‘What he going…’ He went all the way to the sideline and back.”"

Beyond "that"...it was a 14 point game with 8 minutes left and then the Pats intercepted a pass with 7:29 left. They then score on an end-around to go up 21 with 2:30 left.

But, yea, it was a 4th down stop (fumble) (that was done by cheating, no less!) midway thru the 1st quarter that ended the game.

There's an alternate universe where the Steelers, not the Patriots are the dominant team of the 21st century. If they had gone 3-0 instead of 0-3 vs New England in conference finals, the Steelers have 6 super bowl appearances and 2-5 wins while the Pats have 6 appearances and 3 wins. Given that the Pats won those 3 games by an average of over 13 ppg it's not that likely, but it's the kind of thing that should stick in their craw.

The other AFC teams that had dominant stretches during the Pats dynasty either had at least one amazing game (Colts), held their own (Ravens) or flat out got the better of the Pats (Broncos) when they faced each other. Except for Pittsburgh. All they get is a week 8 win over a Pats team that ended up getting revenge in January and winning the super bowl anyway (and not like anyone in New England gave a shit, we were less than 100 hours removed from the Sox winning their first World Series). Sour grapes at its best.

I don’t understand why he’s complaining particularly about the 2004 AFCCG. The 2001 AFCCG he went 9 carries for 8 yards and it’s hard to do without the other team cheating unless you really suck

I think it was supposed to be? This highlight package is in HD and actually has good view of the play at :38 seconds into the video:

The right side of the Steelers line actually does a good job blocking down on the left end and the LG Faneca was pulling around to potentially spring a big play, but the FB Kreider whiffs on Rodney and Ted Johnson would have been in a position to make the stop. It ended up being moot because Bettis seemingly ran right into the gap vacated by Faneca and lost the ball.

Loser. The Pats couldn’t figure out a 4th and 1 broken run up the middle? Hell they called that play 10 times on Sunday on 1st down. The fact he got every fact wrong is amazing and on par.

These complaints and the suggestion that the 20 year run of success was somehow illegitimate based on such minor, imagined , and often disproved grievances always remind me of the classic Father Guido Sarducci bit on SNL where he complains about the Vatican just waiving the third proven miracle for an American candidate for sainthood. And then claims that he heard the first two miracles were actually card tricks.

I guess Cowher going on record during the 2018 Super Bowl week about the signals not being a difference at all doesn’t matter. He said at length that they were dumb for not changing things up, but it didn’t really matter the Pats just throttled them.
It’s funny, I was just thinking recently how you don’t hear the cheater stuff out of the Steeler fans anymore, and then this popped up. I live here so I heard it for years, but it seemed like the last few years they had finally accepted that the Pats were indeed great and their bellyaching wasn’t going to change that.

There’s apparently a former Steeler in my neighborhood who decided to do some DIY concrete work on his sidewalk during the height of the pandemic. Now the final product looks like an ersatz skim coat with no expansion gaps. Within a year it was cracking all over the place.

I don’t know which former Steeler it is, I’ve never asked. But in my mind, it’s Jerome Bettis.

I miss hearing announcers wax about what an important cog Bettis was as the graphics teams flashed his 3.6 ypc. Nobody got more out of a shitty nickname and his team’s mystique than that dude.

To be fair, a top close-up magician from 2023 could probably fool people enough to pull off sainthood throughout much of history. Either that, or be burned at the stake. Yeah, on second thought, probably that one.
