Derek Jeter’s group has bid $1.2 billion for the Miami Marlins and appeared on Monday night to be closing in on a deal, The Post has learned.

While the situation was extremely fluid, Jeter’s group, which includes deep-pocketed Naples, Fla., money manager Bruce Sherman, is now seen as the leading contender to buy the money-losing franchise from New York art dealer Jeffrey Loria, sources close to the talks said.

No sales agreement has yet been presented to MLB for approval, a source said.

Interestingly, NBA great Michael Jordan is among a group of about 15 investors in the Jeter camp, sources said — although the ex-hoopster is said to be kicking in very little cash.

Jeter sees Jordan as a role model in how to become a successful sports executive, a source who knows Jeter said.

Meanwhile, Miami billionaire Jorge Mas is putting the finishing touches on his bid — said to be roughly $1.17 billion, sources said.

No bidder has hit Loria’s $1.3 billion asking price, and it now appears he is willing to accept a slightly lower price.

Wow, I didn't think I could like an ownership group less than the Dolan's, but here we are.

Bruce Sherman is an even bigger reason to hate that ownership group.
I love it when you vaguebook some inside baseball.

My favorite aspect of this saga was when one of the financiers of the Jeter group dropped out with the sour grapes of "Jeter wants to be in control but he has no money."

Um, yeah. He's Derek Fucking Jeter, rich dude. The only reason he's involved at all is because he's famous for being good at baseball, and the only reason you want to own a sports team is to rub elbows with guys like Derek Jeter. Take your gift basket and shut up.

so Jeter/Jordan will beat out Bush/Romney?

what's the story behind this Bruce Sherman guy? seeing some headlines from 2009 about bad bets on media companies leading to his "retirement" from the investing game

Jeb! was part of the Jeter group, but dropped out in late May. Tagg Romney is part of a third group that is not one of the finalists; he had Tom Glavine as part of his group.

Suffice to say that there are a whole lot of former investors in Private Capital Management that were none too thrilled when Bruce made enormous bets on on the US housing market (Bloomberg page 1 holders in Countrywide, Bear Stearns, Lehman etc in '07-'08), and then were left holding the bag as Bruce quietly exited in '09 with a billion dollar payout from Legg Mason. Additional info that I have is not public but speaks to the way that he structured his personal payout that lead to outsized risk taking.

Derek Jeter doesn’t even own the Marlins yet, but he already has informed the team that he plans to fire two special assistants who are in Baseball’s Hall of Fame (Andre Dawson and Tony Perez), the manager who led them to the 2003 World Series championship (Jack McKeon) and the player known as Mr. Marlin (Jeff Conine), according to two MLB sources.

And here’s the twist: Jeter asked Marlins president David Samson to fire those four Marlins luminaries for him, because Jeter didn’t want to do it.

Even more strange: Jeter made the request after telling Samson what he already knew: that Samson would not be returning as team president.

Dawson, Perez, McKeon and Conine all have been serving as special assistants to Samson or owner Jeffrey Loria.

MLB has scheduled a conference call during the first week of October for owners to vote on the Marlins sale, with three-quarters needed for approval. But Jeter and co-owner Bruce Sherman are so confident that they will be approved that Jeter called Samson on Wednesday to initiate several firings.

Jeter also is expected to fire some people on the baseball side of the operation, though it’s believed president/baseball operations Michael Hill will be retained, at least indefinitely if not permanently.

“Sure I’m sad,” McKeon said by phone Friday night after Samson informed him Friday of Jeter’s orders to fire him. “No question you’re sad. I’m disappointed, but you understand. A new regime is coming in and they want their new people in there. You can’t fault them with that.”

In 2003, McKeon replaced Jeff Torborg as Marlins manager on May 11 when the team was 16-26. McKeon went on to guide them to a 75-49 record and a World Series title, which marked the team’s second championship but also represents their most recent playoff appearance – the second-longest postseason drought in baseball behind the Seattle Mariners.

McKeon then managed the team to an 83-79 record each of the next two seasons before Loria made him a special assistant to the owner after the 2005 season.

McKeon returned to the field for 90 games in 2011, taking over for ousted Edwin Rodriguez and managing the team to a 40-50 record.

Since then, McKeon’s duties have included scouting several of the Marlins’ minor league teams, among other assignments.

McKeon had an agreement with Loria to manage one game next September, which would have allowed him to become the oldest manager in MLB history, surpassing Connie Mack, who managed a game when he was 87 and nine months. But that opportunity now seems unlikely to happen.

stanton is 100% gone this offseason
why do you think that? clearing away loria's team seems pretty standard, i feel like stanton should def be the face of the franchise moving forward. could easily become the best player in franchise history

Any special insights you'd like to share? Or just chicken little running around?
He'd like to reduce payroll by $60 million if he can move Stanton (30-35 if not).

http://nypost.com/2017/09/04/derek-jeters-plan-for-marlins-sounds-ominous/

Seems they will at least try to trade him. Might be tough to find a match that both allows them to dump the salary, and brings in enough talent to sell the move to the fanbase.

They may be willing to deal with some fanbase friction to hit the reset button, of course. It's not like they are starting with a really engaged group of fans to begin with. Might as well rip the band-aid off.

Not sure I buy it, but that's at least a basis for suggesting that Stanton is gone. Not sure why soxhop couldn't have mentioned it.

As an aside, if Jeter really only put in $25 million and is able to recoup his entire investment through salary, I don't know if he's utterly loathsome or a genius. (Or both.)

Yeah, I wouldn't bet the farm on him being traded either. The list of teams with the ability to absorb the payroll and who have the chips is pretty small. Atlanta, Philly, maybe the Dodgers if they don't care about getting back under the threshold. Even the Yankees might be out considering their apparent attempt to get under for the 2018-2019 winter. Though you can't ever count them out and they do still have a lot of prospects they could deal. Maybe something starting with Clint Frazier?

Sox don't have the chips or the cap space. Not that I expect that to keep the speculation on the main board from going crazy...

So I am randomly watching morning TV and steer into the Kutcher 2 and a half men. Candy has coffee with Allen and she hints she wants to fuck him. Allen says 'Didn't you used to date Derek Jeter?' She says 'Yes!' He then shrinks in fear.

The Yankees are trying to get under the cap for next season (which should be pretty easy) and then they should be OK with going back over if needed, I don't think that would affect any pursuit of Stanton. But with Judge already on board and Harper an almost certain FA in one more season, it doesn't seem to make sense for NY to give up prospects for Stanton with his ginormous deal.

Not to go too far down this rabbit-hole, but if they landed Stanton with an AAV about 10 million lower than what Harper is likely to get, they wouldn't need to drop that money on Harper the winter after. Both guys are enormously talented right fielders with some difficulty in staying healthy.

If I had to choose between ~30M for Stanton over 10 years and ~40M for Harper over the same span while sitting on a loaded farm system with an already fairly loaded major league roster that is mostly really young, I think I'd probably lean toward the former over the latter.

The downside there is that if the Yankees want to sign more than Harper that winter, trading for Stanton probably makes that a lot more complicated with the luxury tax implications.

I still think Machado makes a lot more sense for the Yankees than Harper, especially with Judge's breakout.

I liked Jeter as a player, but he does strike me as one of those guys at work who tell you not to worry about your mistake, but then runs and bad mouths you to the boss.

I've always preferred to work with people who were dicks, but honest, straight shooting dicks.

Parting ways with the GM is fine and to be expected. But to then ask the guy to be fired to fire the guys with stature strikes me as a dick move. You're in charge, fine; man up.

if the marlins "rebuild", is stanton the only OF that gets traded? Ozuna is arb eligible this year, I think, so I imagine he gets a pretty significant pay increase after his great season.

I think in this case Jeter did a pretty decent job of pointing out that a rebuild in today's atmosphere doesn't necessarily have to translate into trading off all you best players for prospects and forfeiting any desire to win games on the field. So no, I personally don't think Ozuna goes too.

People keep stressing the surface "franchise player" factor, but this isn't TB having locked up Longoria early or a "we'll just look past the money latter if/when things go south" surrounding scenario we are talking about here. Miami is a team that flirts with sub-$100m payrolls, and even with Stanton blowing it up this season has seen their attendance drop for a 3rd straight year (27th).

In a perfect world sure, they keep and build a huge dice roll future around one guy making roughly 1/3 of their payroll. If their ultimate goal is to stay content at where they are now as a franchise it's probably the safer short term bet as well. I just doubt that's the new ownership's overall mindset going in though. Finding a more practical way to hopefully string together a couple of seasons that result in legitimate WC hopes/appearances can/will do more for that city/franchise then fighting a more uphill and losing battle with the Stanton show in tact ever could imo.

My money would be on Stanton getting traded this winter, and not for straight prospects.
