Tatum's already good at those shots. So he's unquestionably rejecting Kobe's Unholy Mole.

O dear. That is such a mix of emotions. That.
I will forever blame Bird for talking the Celtics into taking Antoine over Kobe. Boston would have assembled one of the great asshole teams in NBA history with Kobe/Pierce as the centerpieces. That’s a team that would have won some titles.

If they draft Kobe, they don't necessarily end up with Pierce.

I don't think this actually happened. That draft was pretty clearly thought of as going 6 deep with the Celtics getting whichever guy was left at #6, and that is how it turned out.

Depends. Kobe wasn't good enough as a rookie to have affected their tank season much, and I'm not sure that as a second year guy he'd have been good enough to carry them into the playoffs, thus missing Pierce. Seems reasonably llikely that they are picking around the same place and winding up with either Pierce or Dirk anyway.

The Celtics traded up to get Walker. And Bryant was as highly regarded as the non-Iverson guys, but GMs were concerned due to signability issues, so he floated.

That trade was an incredible heist by the Celtics. Moved up in 1996 and picked up what would be the 6th pick in 1997 in exchange for... Eric Montross.

It was a swindle, largely wasted thanks to the Ricktator. They traded Montross and Samaki Walker for #6 and Dallas’ pick the following year. They should have had Bryant out of the deal, alas all they got was ‘Toine.

Indeed. The Ricktator should have stuck with what he knew - college coaching, recruting violations, and sex on restaurant tables.

Tatum is on Bill Simmons' podcast.

Starts slow, but gets good. Talks about what hes working on (strength and shooting 3s off dribble because he doesnt expect as many open shots).

Good listen. Boner inducing, even with some Kobe talk.

I listen to most Simmons podcasts, but that doesn't mean he doesn't drive me nuts. With the Bradley Beal discussion (he was a mentor to JT), all I wanted was for Bill to ask if Jayson had someone he had taken under his wing. Seems like some obvious follow ups that he misses at times.

I am sitting next to Jayson Tatum Jr. and his grandparents (Jayson’s Mom & Dad) as I type this on a flight from NOLA to Boston. That is all.

News to me that he has a girlfriend, nevermind a kid at 19. Would be news to Wikipedia as well.

Interesting scoop, probably explains part of why he's eschewing the party life for now. Especially since his parents had him when they were 19.

Been pretty well reported, including by Tatum himself.

His Mom talked to me the whole flight, couldn’t have been nicer. And she actually engaged me when she saw me reading the Boston Globe sports page on my tablet — “are you a celtics fan?”, and then said, “well guess what this little guy’s name is?”

Unsurprisingly, they LOVE Ainge/Stevens/Wyc. “Best franchise in basketball, they take care of everything for the players and their families.”

His son is a beautiful kid too. He obviously has a white Mom, and his Dad said she was over 6 foot tall. Kid is HUGE for 8 months, and has one brown eye and one blue eye that the doctors said would stay that way.

She asked why I was going to Boston, and I told her my Dad was having surgery, and she asked his name and said she would include him in her prayers tonight.

Last thing — she said “we going to the Finals this year, mark it down.” They seem like wonderful people.

Not sure why it’s relevant, but the baby’s mother is not white.

If some of the people here hadn't figured out yet that Danny was putting together a team of mutant X-Men, just wait until everyone sees Jaylen and Smart next year.

Interesting. I just meant it because the baby is very light skinned and has light brown hair and blue eyes. He looked very much mixed race to me (which my children are).

Mutant. Super powers.

I feel like this is all so clear.

Between this post and you not realizing Shane Larkin was Barry Larkin's kid, methinks you need to brush up on things.

It's almost as if I'm only a casual basketball fan, trying to go up the learning curve on a baseball-centric board. I mean, I posted the Larkin thing in "things you only learned recently", which is a thread deliberately self-mocking at one's own surprising ignorance.

You're now the 4th person to reply to me here adding information I didn't have. Well, the 4th to reply; the others at least added information. While I appreciate the new information, you don't think you're piling on a bit with the insults?

edit: "Hey guys, here's something I didn't know that I should have, wow." "HAHA LOOK AT THE IDIOT WHO DIDN'T KNOW SOMETHING!"

I mean - you speculated on the race of a babies mother, after implying that it was some kind of secret the kid even existed. Why you put all that out there in the first place is beyond me.

It's not like you didn't know he was a good college 3 point shooter or something.

I did not speculate on the race of the baby's mother, nor would I. You're confusing me with another poster. Maybe get your facts straight before going all condescending.

I noted that it was news to me that he had a kid, and news to wikipedia as well. It was also news to this very thread about Jayson Tatum on a Celtics message board that he had a kid. Maybe you guys all knew it and it didn't need to be discussed, but I imagine I'm not the first around here to learn this.

I did not know that Shane Larkin was Barry's kid. Also did not know that Tatum had a kid. Some of us maybe just enjoy watching basketball and don't really feel the need to learn every detail of players personal lives

Did you get Jr's autograph? Probably be worth something in 20 years or so . . . .

Yikes dude, first day on SoSH? It's all good natured.

I learned about the Tatum having a kid stuff while watching Celtics broadcasts--there were some joking interview questions asking if he was tired being a new dad. I learned Shane Larkin's dad was Barry Larking by reading articles when he signed with Boston. This really isn't TMZ level stuff.
