UGH, a few odd bounces on those rebounds. During the game it's so annoying. It felt like JB gaffed a few of those??? But I may be wrong, it was hard to tell from ABC's camera angles.
...
Yeah, I watched replays on those--nearly all were really, really bad failures of effort and attention to boxing out by guys in the area. It was lazy as hell, and not at all a bad bounce thing.

Agreed, the bad bounce is a lame excuse, just trying to get past the sting of the loss.

The box out is a pet peeve, but its endemic across the NBA. Only a few dudes really do it. When you find them (AB) those players are usually great bench pieces (since no one pays them)

I do think JB mentioned it in PG interviews, hopefully its a learning lesson?

It's not the boxout per se: it was more guys being flat-footed near the ball. I've suspected for awhile that boxing out is slightly overrated in a 3-point league, because the bounces are really long and weird. The key is being active and energetic in the area.

I loved watching JB play last night - especially on the defensive end. I couldn't quite tell for sure, but it almost looked to me like JB clapped at Harden while defending him if as if to say "C'mon, try and get by me!"

It was a frustrating loss, because I thought they were the better team for most of the night, but just really stunk it up in the 3rd. Not to scapegoat him, because that isn't fair, but replace Wannamaker with Kemba and I think they win that game. Agan, not blaming BW, just the talent difference is quite large with having one of our All-Stars out. Also, for as much as I like Smart, and he had quite a few amazing plays last night, I'm getting tired of the drive into the lane and throw up a crazy shot from 5-8' away thing he's been doing.

Also I’m going to go out on a limb and guess that Marcus shooting 15 threes isn’t maximizing the Celtics offense.

JB challenged Harden exactly as you say. He's got spirit, that's for sure.

I'm getting a little frustrated with Marcus these last few games. He can be a very frustrating player because he'll make some unbelievable plays (coming up with a steal when you absolutely have to have one, or making some super clutch shot) but then I feel like he'll also make a number of boneheaded plays (shooting a pull up 3 from 4 feet behind the arc, or some crazy drive where he looks like a linebacker trying to put the ball over the goal line and fouls out). For as great as he can be on defense, I feel like he sometimes really leaves his guy amazingly alone to go help out someone else which results in wide open 3s. He's an emotional guy, and really brings out lots of emotions from the fans as well :)

I appreciate Brown being vigilant about corona. Contrasting with a report today a Red Sox player thought corona was a hoax.

https://theathletic.com/1673215/2020/03/12/celtics-unknown-coronavirus-quarantine/
Before Rudy Gobert’s positive test for COVID-19 shook the sporting world and hastened the need for more urgency around the virus, Jaylen Brown had already started calling for more awareness of the illness. During a Wednesday night Instagram Live session, Brown stressed a desire to use his platform to emphasize the seriousness of the outbreak.

Brown said he had seen a lot of young people joking about the coronavirus or sharing memes about it online. He wanted to preach that this virus is no joking matter, that it is significant, heavy and poised to rattle the country.

“I want people to have the awareness of what’s going on,” Brown said. “This isn’t just a joke, this isn’t a conspiracy theory. This is for real. People will be affected by it. You might not see it now, but (soon) you might start seeing the effects. We’ve got all these people that might be getting sick, etc., and our health care, there’s only so many hospitals. So we might not be able to help and treat everybody. So washing your hands, spreading awareness as much as you can, is great. Also being considerate, limiting your amount of contact with people, staying at home if it’s possible. Because you might be carrying it or know somebody who is. And the less people you come in contact with the better.”

Dunc'd on had their "best contracts in the league" show eaerlier this week. They were excluding max guys and rookie scale guys.
Jaylen Brown was #1 on both their lists. Marcus Smart was top 5

It's especially interesting since neither of them liked the deal at the time, and had obviously poor rationales, even without hindsight.

Essentially it boiled down to them saying "why not wait until FA and make him earn it?", when really the question should always have been "is Jaylen Brown a neutral+ asset at $27M/year and a $115M+ cap?" If the answer is yes, then you have extremely capped downside and full exposure to the upside.

Ainge got a great deal because he asked the correct question, not because he had a crystal ball. Duncan, in particular, has always liked Jaylen, but didn't approach this question correctly (imo).

The funny final twist: if corona fucks the salary cap hard, the deal won't be much better than maxing him would have been.

I didn't catch this when I first listened and posted, but t is crazy that perhaps the best 5 contracts in the league are found on just two teams. IND with Warren, Sabonis, Turner. BOS with Jaylen, Smart.

Actually, if they had not limited it to contracts with more then one more year to run, Theis would have been on the list as well.

During the Smart free agency I assumed he was gone. I thought that some franchise would overpay for a culture changer. I thought that some coach would be screaming at their front office to get him. I was gobsmacked that New Orleans, Sacramento or the Knicks didn’t step in with an offer that Ainge wouldn’t match. It seemed so obvious to me.
Guess his three-point percentage wasn’t good enough.

I think what's tough about Smart as a FA is that its rare for a non-star without a ring to be a significant culture changer for a new franchise. So, I think teams rightly do not place as much value on that for their own teams as he might have for the Celtics (where he 'grew up' and has a leader voice already).

The simple fact is that teams don’t pay near-max rates for clubhouse guys. They pay those guys MLE wages. Even now Marcus’ value isn’t to young teams, it’s to contenders. And they usually don’t have enough cap room to add high end roleplayers unless those guys are ring-chasing and willing to sign for MLE money.

I think that is right, but to be fair, both those things weren't exactly viewed as home runs at the time
I think the Jaylen one was clearly a good deal at the time for reasons I mentioned above. He could have only very marginal progress this year from last and still been a neutral value at that amount.

Agree that Smart was a lot closer, and it took his 3-ball improving to make it a win.

They didn't like the Smart extension or the Brown pick, as I recall...
100% true. I remember listening to the podcast and being shocked at how little both of them thought of Smart. I've found that Duncan is very good at analyzing contracts and the relation to the salary cap but incredibly poor at scouting talent/putting together realistic trade packages

At least they are willing to admit mistakes. They both appreciate Smart and Brown now. (Brown more then Smart) Duncan also seems to not be able to take past (off-court) performance into account. Hence his prediction that the Celtics defense would crater after Al Horford left, without noticing that BS had been crafting top 10 defenses long before Al showed up.

Great article in the Globe about Jaylens trainer during quarantine, his grandfather.

https://www.bostonglobe.com/2020/05/18/sports/jaylen-browns-quarantine-trainer-is-his-78-year-old-grandfather-who-sparred-with-ali/
Willie Brown, who turns 79 in August, did a tour in Vietnam with the Marines in 1963. Afterward, he worked as a truck driver, but really just used that job as an entryway to his true love: boxing. He dreamed of becoming a professional fighter but worried he could not make it a living. So as he crisscrossed the Midwest and the East Coast driving his truck, he offered his services as a sparring partner wherever he went.

Jaylen drove to Atlanta to lead a peaceful protest. I love and will root for this man whether or not he is a Celtic for life, which of course I hope he is.

Jaylen is awesome. Such a great character and the skills are catching up to his character as well. Rooting for guys like him is what makes sports fun for me.

Meanwhile, probably worth a separate thread but god forbid a guy like MJ step up and join in stuff like this. All we have are athletes who post some thoughts and prayers on twitter but don’t do much else. Guys like Jaylen who walk the walk are too few and far between.

Just imagine if you’d have guys with greater visibility and following like MJ leading the charge as well. LeBron, to his credit, seems to be more active on this front. But I really wish MJ would step up for once here. When he talks, people listen, as we just saw with that documentary. This goes the same for famous white athletes as well.

Do any of the big box stores that are open currently carry Jaylen Brown jerseys? I am overdue for one.
