Quite hefty, but I am excited he'll stick around. If circumstances beyond control (Hayward breaking, mostly) flubbed the legit title chances, at least there will be some excitement to watch the team grow around the Jays. Jaylen drew the worst draw last year and was basically the only player ever punished for poor play by Stevens, and he responded by totally simplifying his game and trying to work around the roster issues, often looking like the only non-Marcus who gave a shit last year.

Also makes it likely that they need to move one of Kemba or Hayward in the next couple years.

Applying the "how would I feel if it went the other way?" test to this...I feel good. This is more tradeable than a full max if things go meh, Jaylen won't feel pressure to get his shots, and he they were likely looking at matching a max in the summer.

Worth a reminder that Jaylen turns 23 this week. I have a feeling we'll end up loving this contract, and this core group is going to be a lot of fun to root for again. Sign me up.

I like this. I don’t know how long this means he will be with the Celtics but I am happy for him that he got his payday. Maybe he could have gotten more in free agency but I like that he and Danny worked this out.

Yep, I think Danny knows the business well enough to say that the Celts saved $15 mil by signing Jaylen now. He was getting maxed next offseason.

Glad to have Jaylen back. He's just starting to come into his prime.

I watch markets all day long and I have zero confidence that I am able to accurately characterize a professional sports contract as value, fair or an overpay. I am highly suspicious of those outside of NBA front office types who think they have a good handle on a players value given the lack of data about league/team cap projections as well as specific information about how a team looks at player.

That said, given Browns role, this seems like a fair deal for all involved. Jaylen gets some comfort and the team gets a player contract that looks moveable if need be. Brown also strikes me as a player a team should pay up for given his skillset as well as what appears to be a strong work ethic & grounded approach to his career.

Celtics have multi-year control over the team’s best 4 players. Really happy with this deal.

I'm happy about this. I realize it's not a direct parallel given that Jaylen would have been a RFA in the offseason, but after the Kyrie stuff, it's nice to feel like an important piece is locked up for the sake of future roster construction. I also feel more certain than others that Jaylen, barring injury, will breakout this season. I'm sure this will prompt a lot of inane conversations about what a max (or near max contract) is "worth" in the contemporary NBA, which I think some want to define as All-Star appearances or points per game or other traditional metrics, but I think a lot of excellent players making a lot of money elude that kind of categorization (Jrue Holiday and old friend Al Horford come to mind immediately. Not putting Jaylen on their level or anything). This season already had a good vibe, and this just makes it better.

The caveat here is that we generally DO have a feel for whether a contract is an asset, even mildly, at the time it’s signed. By that standard, since Jaylen would likely bring back minor assets if he were traded tomorrow on this deal, it’s a good contract.

I agree that we don’t know the more important thing: how the Celtics evaluate his upside/work ethic. We do, however, know that they tend to evaluate NBA players well, and also have been reluctant to pay up on extensions. Those factors indicate that Danny et al think very highly of Brown, and there’s a decent chance they’re right.

It’s good to be realistic about the limits of our knowledge, but it’s just as important to catalogue what we can know/infer (with error bars of course).

Yup. This is market value and a no-braner of a deal for the Celtics.

He resigned today as well
Sad to see Sabonis stepping down.

Whoa. So much for the 4/80 offer that was floated around previously - no wonder Danny came out and publicly said that reporting was inaccurate. Agreed with basically everyone else here that this seems a "fair" contract - teams certainly seem to be taking the approach the past few years of locking up impending RFAs a year early when they know they will get max or almost-max deals.

Seems like a slight overpay to me, but with the money already allocated to kemba smart and hayward (and tatum soon), they were never going to be under the cap anyway so whether he got 4-115 or 4-100 doesn't really matter to the team.

Who knows what's fair? But Brown is a two-way player with no health issues. He wanted to just go out there this year and ball. Well, now he can.

I don't understand how a guy who is a below average starter at best gets $26m a year. Granted I'm not as big a basketball fan as I was a decade ago. Jaylen Brown was 162 out of 183 starters in BPM last year, 139th in ws/48, 117th in per.

Obviously some of this is projection, but this is a massive amount of money to a guy that can't shoot and has yet to really live up to his draft status.

Agree with this and the previous post. One has to think that Danny foresees an unforeseen massive improvement.

Twitter is laughing at this contract and they should. Huge overpay.
Twitter. Is there anything it doesn't get right?

Seriously, though...I would have waited to see something from him this year first. So far it takes a lot of growth projection to think he's even a borderline star.

I like the deal. It does price in some growth, but it is reasonable to expect growth from Jaylen. I think he brings a lot of 'hidden' value in his ability to play 3 positions, along with his ability to defend, hit spot up threes, and sometimes get to the rim.

At most it is a mild overpay, and one the Celtics will be able to recover from if need be. It's not a Wiggins deal.

Glad to see it done. Brings back memories of the Bradley and Crowder "overpays", especially the part about how the career .462/.365 guy is a bad shooter.

We're on to Philly.

I defer to those who may have more expertise in these matters but looking at contract in isolation is one thing though I still believe most on this board are ill equipped to accurately evaluate it properly.

More to the point, we don't know how the Cs view not only their cap situation going forward but also how the NBAs overall finances will look over the term of a deal.

For example, the Celtics probably know what sort of FA replacements are likely available over the next few years and how they compare to Brown's expected production. And they likely have a feel for which ones would actually consider Boston as a destination.

I think all we can safely assume is that Ainge is comfortable with this price given all the variables. He may well be wrong and this may be an overpay. However, even if no GM is above making mistakes, the Celtics recent track record as well as the fact that they have way more information than the public makes those fans who are critical look a bit hot takey.

It's pure wishcasting. I like Jaylen quite a bit but overpaying for non-stars is how you ruin your cap. See, current Red Sox.
Meh, it's an 80% max deal with some incentives. At his current floor that's easily tradable.

I think it's a perfectly reasonable deal. Right around market rate looking at other deals for his draft class (Hield, Siakam, Murray) considering his age and performance to date. Twitter hates it because PPG!@!@!!, The smarter basketball guys on Twitter seem to think it's reasonable, not a discount, but not some massive overpay

No team or player option:
Yahoo Sources: Jaylen Brown’s four-year extension with Boston does not contain a team option or player option.

I don't know if it will turn out to be a good deal or not. But people tend to undervalue defense, and Brown is a good defender.
