The man, the legend, the Finals MVP, deserves a new thread for a new year and a new mood.

As per usual, he is fueled by disrespect, which at the present time is composed of Derrick White getting picked to replace Kawhi on Team USA over him. He of course tweeted that it's effectively Nike trying to block him from the marketing opportunity that the Olympics provides. Here is some analysis to that effect:

View: https://youtu.be/5bz-YgVpq6M?si=q6f8IoH8SL96GaEz

He has a long long track record now of using the off-season to address a weakness of his and get better at something. Last summer it was his ball security on the dribble and finishing with his left. The year before, on-ball defense. This year - who knows?

All I can say is, I'm glad he's under contract for another 4 years.

Fwiw, I'd say that Jaylen's beef is not with the White selection as much as it's with the belief that he was just excluded from the team for politics (founded or unfounded). Making it a juxtaposition with Derrick is unfair.

And honestly while I feel for him, chip-on-shoulder Jaylen is a bad man. The world is on notice...again.

Fwiw, I'd take him over Booker, Edwards, and Haliburton because defense and physicality of FIBA rules play, but it is what it is.

I asked Jaylen Brown if he believes Nike played a role in him being left off Team USA. He said he does, but doesn’t want to comment beyond that. Brown also talked to White to congratulate him on being named to Team USA and said they’re good.

Jaylen Brown asked by @GwashburnGlobe if being left off of Team USA further motivates him: “Absolutely. I'm super fired up. I got all the motivation in the world. I love it, honestly."

Full interview(I think), he's happy DWhite made the team, called him to let him know that, and he's ready to get back to work. I think in 20 years we are going to realize how lucky we were to watch two stars who aren't satisfied with one, want to put in the work and be better every year and will(most likely) never be content.

We're also probably going to appreciate that Jaylen doesn't get pushed around, speaks out when he thinks something is off, and shines some light on things that happen behind the scenes in the NBA. He's not really taking any shit. Might be a lonely road for him sometimes, but it's admirable. And I think his teammates appreciate it, especially those that he's now bonded with given the championship. Yeah, he could probably lighten up sometimes, but they understand this is who he is.

Full agree. He seems to be the kind of player who thrives on this sort of thing. And the kind of man who believes fiercely in his ideas and beliefs.
Given which, the style and voice he adopts when speaking publicly (in interviews and so on) is striking. He speaks softly, carefully, thoughtfully. And smolders with conviction. It's kind of hypnotizing.

20 years? What about 20 minutes? :)

As for USA Bball snub, if I were in charge, there are two reasons I would have picked JB over DW. First, I think JB's on-ball defense is more impactful than DWhite. You can ask JB to just go shut down someone for a few minutes - I mean that's what he did for the Cs all year.

But more importantly, USA BBall is going to need JB in 4 years. I think DW is the kind of player who will played every time he is called but at the next Olympics, USA BBall is going to need every great wing it can find as I presume LBJ, Kawhi, KD, and Jrue (and Steph) either won't be playing or won't be playing much.

Apropos of nothing: I like Jaylen with the short beard.

With both JB and JT, I don't think I've ever seen them more comfortable in their own skins. I was sort of skeptical that the championship would change them, but I'd swear they just carry themselves differently now, like a huge load is off their shoulders. I'm so fired up for next season.

I've a nagging suspicion this thread is gonna become "What's He Gonna Say Now?" at some point.
If you worked at Nike, you're already saying that now. Someone who has the confidence to speak his own mind frankly will step on some landmines along the way. He already has in the past. It's the bad that comes with the good.

Yeah. They give zero fucks. The have stepped completely out of their shells and took flight. That process was going on all year, but grabbing that ring does it.

If he hashed it over with DWhite, which I always assumed he did, then good for him.

It's clear that "sneaker politics" played a decent sized role in him not getting the call. I mean, watch that Grant Hill interview. He pretty much says it without saying it

Bontemps said on a podcast (Barrett's podcast) that while in most cases, it's hard to repeat because of the added pressure, he thinks the Cs will likely find things easier this season - because of all of the pressure that's been lifted off of them.

Bet the over on the season totals (despite KP being out until December)!

Free throws is probably one of the 'easiest' things for him to work on this Summer. Playmaking would be something that would add to his game, but seems a little more difficult to work on that in the offseason as it's not as much an individual skill.

I feel like every single glimpse we got of him in practice during the playoffs was of him working on his free throw shooting, typically with multiple coaches yelling at him to try and distract him. For better or worse, I think he's well aware that it's his most obvious avenue of improvement. Anecdotally it seems like 90% of his misses are short, but even if that's true, I don't know if it's helpful for him to be aware of.

Honestly at this point I'd settle for him remaining around 70-75% (not a liability, but definitely leaving points on the board) as opposed to the Westbrook path (who somehow went from 82% from 09-17 to 69% from 18-24). As long as it doesn't dull his aggressiveness, I'm ok with it.

Recent developments with JB make it increasingly unlikely that Klutch will be lining up to rep him. And he could have had it all...

I think improving free throw percentage makes very little difference in the grand scheme, the real issue is if it starts ticking down to the point where it becomes a good strategy to foul in general, which isn’t a thing until you start getting down to like 60%

Back in the water for JB:

View: https://twitter.com/FCHWPO/status/1825270736497324417

Normally I'd say that a guy who has played for 8 years (and among active players has played more playoff games than everyone still in their 20s, other than Tatum) has already hit his ceiling and the best we can hope for his a long plateau, but I'm optimistic the best is yet to come. Aside from the excellent playoff run, he averaged 26/6/3 after the all-star break (on a .593 TS%, better than any full season he's ever hard) with easily the best defense of his career. Any talk about him having surpassed Tatum in these playoffs is pure nonsense, but I'll be honest - I can see a path for that to actually happen, in a way that hasn't been possible probably since before the bubble. More than anyone else on the roster, I'm very excited to see how he looks when they come back in the fall.

Also, JB had this to say about his water workouts, according to this: View: https://bleacherreport.com/articles/10132360-celtics-jaylen-brown-shares-viral-photos-of-underwater-workout-before-nba-season
Super smart to me as I presume the water really saves wear and tear on joints and other parts of the body while maximizing aerobic ability.

After helping lead the Celtics to their first NBA championship since 2008, Brown spoke to YouTuber KT The Arch Degree in June and discussed how underwater training has benefitted him:
"The more I've embedded myself in water, the more I've seen my body transform in the last couple of years," Brown said at the 18:40 mark. "I've just gotten more athletic, I've gotten faster, I've gotten bigger and stronger and I credit it a lot to improving my relationships with the water."
Brown went on to reveal that he's done workouts that are typically reserved for the Navy SEALs, like swimming laps in a 10-foot pool while wearing a 50-pound vest.

One reason I'm really, really excited to watch the games next year is that Jaylen made a real level-up in being a 1B playmaker, not just a play finisher.

He's going to get a lot more of those reps this season, and it's going to be fun to watch him develop more consistency there.

Yep. It was fun watching him do it in the second half of last year + the playoffs. His "on the move" gravity is substantial, and he seems to have unlocked it bigtime. More of the same please. Continuing to build on his cardio and explosiveness in the pool should only build on that orbital gravity (trademark pending) that he has already.

It would be really helpful in getting Tatum more easy/open looks.

Thanks for sharing @wade boggs chicken dinner

Watching Brown hound Luka and pick his pocket again and again is glorious. There are a couple of clips of JB blocking Kyrie's shots which bring me joy as well.

I liked how all of the clips were super short. They captured how quickly possessions change when strong defensive play is a consistent focus.

I also loved that the Celtics were in the lead or tied for all but two of the clips. It was a truly dominant playoff run and I like reminders of that.

Can't complain about the lids and to be fair, balling isn't the only thing he knows.
