That inspired me to look up Ellsbury's b-ref page. Man...it's unbelievable how much the Yankees paid for him, and other than a solid 2014, how little he gave them. LOL

BTW, how did that guy hit so few doubles? Raw speed alone and a decent batting average would make you think he ought to have hit a lot more. His stellar 2011 aside, which you referenced, he only hit more than 27 doubles ONCE, in 2013, when he hit 31. Meanwhile a lot of guys a lot slower hit a lot more doubles regularly. I don't get it.
Of course, it was an addition by subtraction ploy back then. Get him off the Red Sox and to the Yankees. Unfortunately for them, they overpaid, and the injuries...

Duran is fast, but it seems like the common belief is that he is generationally fast, which is not the case: Statcast has Duran's sprint speed at 29.1 ft/sec, tied for 26th in MLB and a good ft/sec behind the top tier. This could be because Duran seems to move so frantically when he runs, so perhaps he looks faster than he is.

When you endure a season in which your catcher leads the team in stolen bases, it doesn't take much speed to look like the second coming of Willie Mays Hays.

It blows my mind seeing Mike Trout sitting there at #15 on that list at 30 years old. Absolute freak of nature.

I guess Aaron Judge is faster than Mookie, and JBJ?
JBL is not particularly fast, so that's not surprising. Sprint speed is measured when the runner reaches their top speed and doesn't take acceleration into account. So even though Judge might have a faster top speed than Mookie, it may take him longer to get from first to second depending on how many steps it takes him to really get moving.

Judge has giraffe-length legs that once they are moving; they are really gaining ground.

Mookie isn’t particularly fast either. He typically grades out somewhere in the middle of the pack.

But top speed ignores the importance of acceleration. His HP to 1B time if 4.11 in your link is 1st in all of MLB. He’s explosive and twitchy.

Second to Ohtani, but your point stands. He's quick and brings something to the team we haven't seen in some time.

Yeah, right. Sounds like mom or dad smacked him upside the head.

You know what? Good on him. It's very easy these days to get stuck in and not change yourself, no matter what the reasoning. This is a step in that direction.

He’s an idiot for refusing to get it in the first place, but the hardest thing in this world is to change one’s mind. I don’t care if he got it just for the MLB money, good on him for doing so.

For all we know *they* were the problem. But as mentioned in another thread, I really dont care whether its that or a fellow player that caused the change. Hopefully, others follow.

Why do I have a funny feeling that Houck and Sale are not going to follow along? I guess their research has gotten different results.

Putting the team before his beliefs, however questionable. I hope Houck and Sale are taking notes. Much easier to root for him moving forward knowing that he might be a difference maker in huge games.

Good on you, Jarren. Glad he saw the light for whatever reason, as others have said.

Good for Duran. Color me surprised.

Not holding out hope for Houck or Sale, especially if Houck's family is anti-vax as he's suggested.

I wondered if the org is respectfully laying out the facts irrespective of Covid to Duran (and Houck and others), which is that the AL East is so tightly competitive for WC spots that the Sox having to win a play-in game or travel to TOR for the playoffs is high probability. "We hope you are ready to compete and contribute when we need you the most in September etc." Then he has a month or two to let it sink in and prepare himself to be in playoff form, as it were.

It was a bummer this past week in TOR that we didn't have Houck as an option, and I don't think when the games count even more in Sept etc that the Sox can withstand missing their closer as the team is presently constituted.

At least at that point, they'll hopefully have Whitlock in the pen.

I can think of 150 million reasons Sale would have not to do it.

Those reasons don’t apply in the same way to Houck or Duran, yet.

edit- apparently these guys won’t get vaxxed to protect others, they won’t get vaxxed to support the team, but I think Duran correctly surmised that he could be jeopardizing his career in MLB and potentially millions of dollars if he didn’t. It’s nice to see he has his priorities in order.

This. I'm glad he's getting the shot for his own sake and I'm glad he'll be available for the team.

I also think if the Sox keep humming along as they have been that the pen will get fortified with closer-stuff relievers (not closers necessarily) to spread around the strong arms that can get hot.

So they aren't pinning their hopes on any one guy. They may annoint a guy if they are in playoff mode later, but for now what they've been doing pre-Houck and with Barnes toast all season long has worked (Strahm, Schreiber, Diekman, Whitlock as reliever).

Agreed. Now I’m good on keeping him on the major league club when Kiké gets back.

As others have said, whatever the reason, good for him. It's never too late to do the right thing.

Going 1-2 in Toronto wasn't ideal, but it was acceptable.

Now it's on to Chicago and let's win there.

Good on him, whatever or whoever finally got through to him. As mentioned above, hopefully this motivates the other 2 to do the same. I like the kids game a lot, it’s nice to be able to root for him unconditionally.

Probably more like the fan base, media, perhaps a few teammates and the front office.
It’s not the money (read: it’s the money). We’ll take it
With his research now complete Duran has concluded that getting paid > not getting paid and that being adored at the height of his still young career > than being despised.

He said it’s a personal choice. Take him at his word. He did not say it was religious or medical or something his family was forcing him to do. He’s a big enough boy to grow a doofus soup catcher, so any mommy and daddy excuse you want to float for him does not fly.

Good for him! And for me frankly because I love watching him play and did not enjoy feeling torn about him the past couple of months. I wish he had made this decision sooner like all of you but I'm not going to rip him. Judging him for not seeing the light until now will not help anybody. The bottom line is that more see the light.

I hope this isn't too gamethready, but this is one of the worst effort plays I have ever seen.

It is like he is trying to tank his trade value. I think he needs to be benched for a few games for that but what do we do with this guy long term? He needs to get loads of playing time this season to see if he is actually going to be a major league caliber player. If his stats are terrible at the end of the season, we need to look elsewhere and not just hand him a starting job, yea? He is 26 at the beginning of September.

It’s remarkable that a player presumably trying to establish himself in the big leagues would show such an absurd lack of effort like that. I’ve never seen anything like it.

It’s one thing to lose the ball in the air, shit happens. It’s quite another simply stop moving afterwards.

He should be in Worcester by the 8th inning.

He should be in Worcester by tomorrow and out of Massachusetts by August 3.

I know it’s one play, but good gravy and everyone loses the ball in the lights sometimes (especially on this team) but the lack of hustle is appalling.
