Is Stevenson going to see the field again this year or is he stapled to the bench for that fumble in week one?
I don't know how many times it's been said, but apparently it still needs to. He wasn't benched for the fumble. He came right back in the game shortly thereafter. It was then that he got absolutely blown up in pass protection and nearly got Mac Jones knees destroyed. It was THEN that his butt got stapled to the bench.

Well regardless of the reason, it needs to be unstapled with White out and Sony traded away because Bolden sucks, I can't comprehend in what NFL scenario that Bolden is a better option.

Totally agree - but it all comes down to pass pro and they clearly don’t trust Harris, Taylor - hence why Bolden got so much fun last Sunday.

But that experiment needs to end Bc Bolden is a complete 0 in the backfield.

I think the only reason he wasn't cut and dumped on the practice squad was in case someone got hurt. Which has now happened. You might see him again at some point.
I think too much is being made of the benching. They had 5 RBs; you can't keep all 5 active. Harris is the best runner, White the best receiver, Bolden the best STer, that left one slot for Taylor or Stevenson. Stevenson got the nod Week 1 and had some rookie struggles; Taylor got the nod the last two weeks. Neither played very much. Now White's out of the picture and all four figure to be active, and there's opportunity that wasn't there the first three weeks.

I think we also need to give Stevenson at least a little bit of slack. Those were his first snaps at NFL game speed with real NFL players. Those preseason games are really for fringe/first year guys to give max effort to earn a spot, the starters for the most part were probably not playing at max. That fumble was probably the first time he's had grown men trying to actually rip the ball out with no regard for his well being. Same with the shit blitz pick up on Roberts. That was probably the hardest he's ever been hit up to that point. I'm not saying he didn't deserve the benching, he clearly wasn't ready in that moment, but I don't believe that he won't be 10 times more prepared and ready next time he sees the field

I mean the obvious answer is... if you need your RB to make a block (or run a route more complex than a leak out).

I hope they give Taylor, Harris and Stevenson chances, but they are not complete backs, wouldn't be shocked to see them sign someone to the PS then promote him in a week.

It's pretty ironic that the general feeling was they had an embarrassment of riches at the RB position; now 3 games into the season, it's not the case.

Things sure can change in a hurry in the NFL.

They still have a ton of guys who can run.... problem is the passing back role. And while Sony is probably a bit better there, it wasn't really his lane either. Basically we had 5 early down backs and 1 3rd down back. Then the 3rd down back got hurt

True, so needless to say, the guy they could afford to lose the least is the one they lost.

Too bad.

So if they had 4 early down backs on the roster to begin with, what do you think the reasoning was to draft another one?

Was it because they had already decided at the end of the year they were letting Sony walk?

Man this sucks. James White is firmly in the “never needs to pay for a drink” club among Boston athletes. Also seems like a great guy. Hate to see this be the end for him (if it is).

I assume so, also maybe they thought long term Taylor is a 3rd down back, he just isn't ready yet.

Also worth keeping in mind that they planned last week for White to be there, so there wasn't much reason to integrate White or Stevenson into the 3rd down packages. When White went down, it made sense to turn to Bolden because he has extensive (albeit ineffective) experience in that role and in the offense in general. But with White out for a long time, they can prepare differently this week and in coming weeks - hopefully with Taylor or Stevenson (or even Harris) taking on more of that role. There may be some scenarios, at least for the time being, where it still makes sense to use Bolden; I'm thinking of no-huddle stuff.

Who is the better passing back, Taylor or Stevenson?
In the near term, it would seem to default to Taylor since Stevenson doesn't have a year's worth of coaching on running NFL-quality routes in the Pats system.

Well that's ridiculous. Why would you say that? Yeah, he made some mistakes, and yeah, BB can be too stubborn by half at times, especially when it comes to young players and stupid mistakes, but that would be crazy. Cutting him??? A guy with that much potential and talent on a team with that few weapons/playmakers (young or otherwise) on either side of the ball? I don't see it.

@Super Nomario - I know it was in slack and not here, but I'm still claiming a short teem victory. I said that I didn't think the Pat's would miss White as much as people were making out. They seem to be chugging along just fine, good sir.

The offense was great today - it hasn't been all that great much of the season. I think the jury's still out on this one, though I would agree Bolden has done fine for the most part.

Bolden’s stats from NO through today: 24 rushes for 135 yards, 5.6 yards per carry. 27 targets, 25 receptions for 227 yards and 1 TD, 9.1 yards per catch. 362 total yards in 8 (7.5) games for 45 yards per game. 2019 White (so second best year) gave them 61 yards per game. White gave them more as a receiver but overall the production drop off from Bolden isn’t a drastic downgrade. He’s a fine and capable backup. They still need to find a third down/receiving back for next year and could double dip with a FA and through the draft.

Funny i was abut to look this up, since he reminded my of White today, not breaking anythng but getting few more yards than you expect.

Belichick was really effusive in his praise of Bolden yesterday in BB's press conference. The question was asked about Bolden stepping up for JW and Belichick went on and on about how good Bolden has been, particularly in light of the fact that Bolden has kept all of his special teams duties and is performing really well there too. Belichick explained how much information Bolden has to process as a 3rd down back, 1-2 down back and special teams, and how well he's doing it. Belichick showed genuine admiration for the guy.
