I'm sure the team that played Amendola and Edelman concomitantly for years could find a way to fit a more twitchy slot guy and Meyers on the same field. Bourne isn't that guy either, he fits that profile even less than Meyers. Not a "get open quick in space" guy.
First, I think Amendola and Edelman were effective together for that first season together. That's about it. The rest of the time one was either hurt and/or just not very effective (Amendola).

The fact that Bourne isn't that guy either is kind of the point. Assuming BOB is looking to add a fast twitchy slot guy, I can see them letting Meyers go. Now for that contract, I wish the Pats kept Meyers(assuming they had the chance) but can see why they might want to go in a different direction. I'm willing to wait to see what BB and company do.

This is fair. I just think they could have used the continuity. You have a guy that's a proven commodity for Mac, even if you draft ay Flowers/JSN and they turn out to be very good players, I think odds are very high they won't reach Meyers' production as rookies and you used a high pick that could have gone towards finding your LT of the future to replace a slot receiver. And then it's February 2024 and you have a decision to make on Mac's fifth year option. Will you have a true gauge on who he is as a player? I just think that contract is a nothingburger.

Yes, you will. How a player plays in less than ideal circumstances is usually the best way to evaluate them... lots of guys can do pretty good in a perfect situation, then you trick yourself into paying them a salary that means you can't afford the perfect situation anymore.

Okay, so as long as we set a "no excuses" bar for 2023 I'm game.

it’s not. They literally should have stripped the entire thing down after Brady, bottomed out and built it up again with high draft picks but they didn’t. They are now stuck in the worst place to be in the league.
Agree. They look like .500 team so far for next season, unless they pull off a few good off-season moves.

AFC East getting tough. Fish making a lot of good moves, Jesters going all in, Bills already all in, and the GOAT coach trying to stop them all. Almost no way this division can live up to expectations.

Belichick's too competitive to tank. He'll just get 31 other teams to go all in in 2023. There's a Chuck Norris as GM meme here somewhere.

I expect them to play good ball. Just a question if the other teams can play better. AFC going to be crazy. Getting to be like NBA West vs East from a while back. Lamar could even things out a little if he goes to the NFC.

Who is going to be bad as of now in the AFC?

AFC south except Jags
And that’s all I got.

And there's a chance two of those bad teams come out of this draft with Bryce Young/Anthony Richardson.

AFC definitely looking stronger than the NFC but you know a couple injuries and things change in a hurry. Some team that we all think is great is going to be awful next year, etc etc.

For all the talk how the AFC was supposed to be so much better last year, the NFC won interconference play by two games.

No way. The floor is about 7 wins. They always find a way to play above their talent.
The schedule is a bear. The Jets started garbage at QB for two of their wins last year, and now they have Aaron Rodgers. They are top to bottom one of the least talented teams in football, and they just got worse.

They have a tough schedule. Their upside might be .500. I think they’re a 4 win team as of right now.

They could go 5-4 @ home. They could go defeated away, but probably win 2. I always do a plus minus. Looks like 7-10, 4 -13 would shock me but I also think 10-7 would be very surprising. So 7-10 +/- 2 seems reasonable.

I agree completely. I thought he'd get north of 15mil/per, and considering we've heard no smoke about him meeting/talking to other teams, haven't heard about interest from other teams, I think there's a real possibility he told Rosenhaus "get me the best deal you can in Vegas, I'm going there."

Anything else makes no sense. He had the opportunity to set the market for WR's in FA this year, the Pats were in a no-leverage spot and as much as I think BB is a disaster when it comes to the WR position, I'd be shocked if the Pats weren't willing to beat/match that offer, even given their history at re-signing UDFA's in the past (JC Jackson, Butler, etc.). This just seems like a guy who wanted to go to a particular place, play with a particular team and coaches and he took it. Good for him.

I also don't think Jakobi is a #1, and in Vegas, he'll be the 3rd, 4th option in that passing attack, which is what he should have been here.

But hey, we basically took Agholor from the Raiders for the same money that the Raiders just gave Meyers, so there's that, or something.
this is definitely some armchair psychoanalysis but reading the quote from Meyers it seems like he wanted to go to Vegas but it also reads ,to me at least, that the Patriots didnt match the Raiders offer

Schedule is hard to predict, how many times have they faced teams devastated by injuries to some of their best players in the last few years? I still can't see them losing more than 10 games.

Rosters only, 3-14 is on the table. BB is a great coach is what has me at 7-10. If he gets 10 against this schedule without QB injury Armageddon, he should be the COY.

Buffalo, Miami, KC, Philly are all loses as this team is currently constituted. I doubt they beat the Jets with Rodgers or the Chargers. That leaves Washington, New Orleans, Indy. So they win those, and win one on the road. 4 win team.

Meh.. guys will get hurt, they'll win games they shouldn't. Plus there are still some bad teams on there:
WAS doesn't have a QB
IND doesn't have a QB
NO doesn't have a QB
LV probably downgraded talent from last year
PIT isn't good
DEN is spending a lot of money, but were bad last year

Plus more than half the rest are a QB injury away from bad. That's the NFL. I'd expect the Patriots to win at least 6 games, probably more.

Edit- also I expect the Patriots to be better. They upgraded playcallers, all their young guys have another year of work, they're losing minimal talent (Jakobi and McCourty who was already declining) they'll add draft talent and still have money to spend. they already added depth at one of their weakest spots last year.

They clowned the Chargers in LA, right? I think they could beat them at home. I’ll believe Jets win when the clock hits zero. Took OT with Favre against Cassell. Hoodie always breaks out his best shit against us but I think he is an AR fan so maybe not so spite motivated that week.

Clowned is a little strong, they won a 3 point game in which Herbert threw a pick six with a lead.

I could just be overly pessimistic on their roster, or still pissed that they thought last year’s offensive coaching plan wouldn’t be a complete disaster, but I don’t see them winning too many games next year. I hope that I’m wrong.

Meh, NO has Carr which is a fine QB, Denver will very likely be a lot better, who knows what Pickett will be in his second year (probably better), the Raiders are about the same. I think the Colts and Commanders are probably gimmes, but not these other teams.

there are no gimmies, but a lot of winnable games. Have to admit I already forgot Carr signed with NO, truly the wonderbread of Qbs

Those are all winnable for sure, I just think 4 out of those 6 teams are looking at the Pats and thinking they should win that game. Still a whole lot to go down and a lot of talent to be acquired, but as of now coaching is 90% of the reason for my confidence this team will be respectable in 2023.

They didn't really play both of those guys though. Once Edelman became the guy Amendola hardly played unless Edelman was hurt.

According to Curran, only one other team besides LVR was even mildly interested in pursuing Meyers. The league clearly views him as someone not worth investing big money into, and that makes sense. Great story, seems like a great guy, but he's a really nice #3 WR to have...and how much do you want to invest in a #3 WR? All the talk about him getting $12-$15m/year was pretty clearly agent talk, and I think it warped fans' perception of his actual market and value.

O'Brien generally seems to prefer vertical slots anyway, and that just isn't Jakobi's game. I think the question is less "How will NE replace Jakobi's production?" and more like "Was Jakobi a good scheme fit for what NE wants to do moving forward?" I'm not worried about them replacing his production because it's not going to be a 1-for-1 "replacement"; I'm more interested in seeing who plays the vertical slot role. Thorton? A Mecole Hardman type? A Josh Downs? Whatever ends up happening, I'm guessing NE moves in a more dynamic and explosive direction...as they should.

I'd rather go 3-14 next season than 7-10 personally.

Give me Caleb Williams or give me the playoffs.

It's a strange approach to BB and Kraft's final years to bottom out and rebuild. I would rather they try to GFIN and then have a few years of wreckage once BB retires. The team seems to be a bit directionless. If the best case is a 6/7 seed, they are not really doing much of anything.
