Good for him. I don’t know a lot about NFL contracts but the AAV seems about right. $21M guaranteed feels like a pretty big win for Jakobi.

That seems really reasonable and I'm disappointed to see him go. Did Bill really value him that low? Or was there any indication Jakobi wanted out of NE for non-football reasons?

Patently absurd that they wouldn't match or slightly exceed that. His production in the past three years makes this contract an absolute bargain. Continuity is important for an offense and he has been the go to guy in crunch time for three years now. Yeah, not a great player, but also a guy that would've benefitted from more talent around him. New OC, new receiving corps, another year of major change surrounding Mac.

If he wanted out, he wanted out. If he was willing to sign the same deal with us and we said no, that's kind of insane given what's out there.

Raiders skill positions are scary good.

That’s really not that bad of a contract. They were talking $15m+ a year for him. I believe the pats could have and should have done that same contract unless he really just wanted out.

He already won the Raiders a game last year... might as well get paid for it.

But seriously, I thought he was a solid #2, and our team is worse now.

Consistent, tough player who got open at a good rate. Doesn’t give you anything in terms of YAC or a downfield threat, so I’ve been agnostic about paying sizable dollars to keep him.

This doesn’t seem like sizable dollars to me. If there is a Hopkins trade or something in our future, then fine, but losing Meyers’ steady if unexceptional production is not great. It’s not so much that I love Meyers, it’s that replacing him isn’t a slam dunk in the short term.

I think the Pats absolutely need to trade for Hopkins now. Otherwise, there's nothing left out there to fill the Meyers void.

Completely reasonable deal, but I'm not broken up about it. While he was their best receiver, he simply isn't a difference maker.

Trade for Hopkins, draft JSN at 14 and sign Orlando Brown Jr. Basically the only pathway for their offense not to decrease in talent from an already depleted unit last year. Pretty feasible, let's see if they do it.

BB's handling of the WR position in the latter stages of his career has been pretty rough to watch.

I'd be less upset by this if I had any faith at all in the team's ability to evaluate WRs in the draft.

To piss away the amount of money they did on useless entities like Jonnu Smith and Nelson Agholor and then hold tight on an actually productive guy in Meyers doesn't make any sense to me.

The whole spending spree that off-season seemed to be Kraft reacting to Brady winning in Tampa, no? It certainly didn’t work and I suspect the Pats are back to their old model of trying to find value. Of course, without a great core and the GOAT, I’m not sure how compelling a place to play New England is anymore.

Outside of a couple of nice Randy Moss years, what's different in the latter stages of his career? Bill has never spent money on this position.

BB would rather have the draft pick compensation?

Jakobi must have really loved McDaniels, because that's not a particularly big deal and he's the first WR to sign despite a consensus he's either the best or 2nd best guy on the market.
Weird. Usually you only sign early if it's a great deal (Christian Kirk). Signing a below estimates deal early?

I think it's a bad approach in 2023. Just look around the league, what are the young thriving QBs that don't have top tier weapons around them? Can't build a roster as if you had Tom Brady with Mac Jones going into year 3.

I just think they should do whatever is in their power to not have "is Mac the guy?" discussions as the time comes to make a decision on picking up his fifth year option/extending him. You won't find out what you have by constantly shifting pieces and coaches around him without paying guys.

Yeah, less than I thought he might get but tough to get too worked up over it. Good for him though.

Meyers was nice, but he was here last year and everyone still agrees the offense needs a makeover.

Go get Hopkins or Jeudy, maybe JSN in the draft.

From undrafted pick out of college to $22mm guaranteed, potentially $33mm. Very happy for Jacobi.

Also very happy to not tie up $11mm on the production that seems like it can be replaced at a cheaper cap cost.

OK but he was the best receiver in 2021 and he was pretty good with Cam in 2020 too. He'll help out any offense and this is not crazy money. Obviously nothing to do if he wanted to leave but I'm upset.

The post I responded to specifically talked about Bill not willing to spend at WR, so I'm not solely talking about Meyers. But while Meyers wasn't a difference maker, he was basically forced into being a number one option because the team lacked talent at the position. Wouldn't surprise me in the slightest to see him have better production on a similar number of targets in an offense that throws the ball more often and has an alpha at the position to pull attention away from him in the slot. Meyers is a good player, he's the best receiver they had, if you let him go you better pay/draft at least two guys that are better, otherwise you're stuck in mud. And it's not even a given that said players would gel with Mac/the system as well as Meyers did. He had more yards in his first four seasons than Deion Branch, I think the guy is severely underestimated, 65-80 catch 750-850 yard receivers don't grow on trees, not even at his current contract.

And to think some thought he might get Kirk money. This was far more in line with reality.

I may be in the minority here but i want nothing to do with Hopkins. Been injured the last 2 years and is entering the age range when WR’s begin their decline. To top it off he and O’Brien have had a rocky relationship at best. I would much prefer to trade for someone younger with less baggage.

Meyers / Renfrow could be a very, very cool combination. I was with a few SoSHers when we missed out drafting him, getting Meyers instead. I loved the converted QB to slot receiver story, it was like Edelman 2.0. Alas, it was never quite the same and now both Meyers and Renfrow will be running like little bees catching passes from whoever is replacing the injured Jimmy G that game.

This is definitely an underpay honestly, Kirk money wasn't likely, but if he held out for the best offer he probably gets $15M a year with $20M+ guaranteed from someone. This deal both in $ and timing certainly indicates a guy who wanted to play in a certain system for certain guys.

At this rate Hunter Henry should be a 2nd round pick in fantasy because Mac isn’t going to be able get the ball to anyone else

happy for Jacobi and Josh

Just want to note that ESPN's player tracking metrics have Meyers 10th in the NFL from 2020-22, with the same score as Hopkins and Cooper Kupp. Main difference is Meyers doesn't produce YAC.

I don't think he's that good as this doesn't quite pass the smell test, but it might not be a slam dunk upgrade to switch Meyers for Hopkins.

Clearly left money on table but how much, who knows. Disappointing for Pats since it impacts comp picks, no?

It feels low. I know Jakobi is a bit of a weird player in that his production feels replacable and he had trouble getting open when defenses focused on him, but he was often the only guy you could trust on the field to be productive, he clearly had a good rapport with Mac Jones who is going into a make or break year, and NE is going to have a new offensive coordinator this year - familiarity is kind of important there.

We'll see how they spend the money Meyers didn't get and maybe Jakobi just wanted flat out of New England but if he brought 3/33 back to NE and said "I'll stay if you match" and they didn't? It feels like a bad decision to me.

I wonder whether Meyers would have matched Edelman's production if he'd had Brady throwing to him (other than his first year). He did alright given the QBs he had.

This is a very reasonable deal, especially when compared with the Agholor signing. NE has cap space, not only this year, but gobs of it next year. Some of that in 2024 will be eaten up by likely extensions for Dugger/Bentley/Onwenu, but something isn't adding up here. NE may not always spend the actual dollar outlays in a given year, but they're always pretty close to the cap. Maybe I'm wishcasting, but not signing Meyers to a completely manageable deal (and one that they basically aready did with Agholor), strikes me as them needing the room for something else, and there isn't much else out there that is particularly exciting at this point in time.

Lamar is coming.

100% agree. Would prefer they target Jeudy.

EDIT: forgot that Moore was already moved to the Bears.

Amusingly 7th is.... Kendrick Bourne (4th if you just do his 2 years as a Patriot)

Looking deeper, Jakobi doesn't stack up in yards per route, because he gets open and gets catches short, but has no explosiveness after the catch or to get many deep balls.

I don't love Hopkins from a price/age/injury standpoint but he's probably the best option. I also don't love Jeudy at his likely price, he doesn't produce, particularly he doesn't catch the ball well enough.
