This guy seems fed up with the landscape of college football right now. Does Khan want to try and reunite Lawrence (and Etienne) with his college coach?
for those who can’t see the tweet. It’s a pic of Dabo Swinney complaining about the landscape of college football.

Wow, Shad lowered the boom!

"...regaining our trust and respect was essential. Regrettably it did not happen."

Damn
Seriously. Not even the usual boilerplate “ We thank Urban for time and effort, but it’s in the best interest of the organization to move on” blah, blah, blah. Shad’s going to the mattresses, and I hope Urbie doesn’t get a cent of his future contract money.

I thought the last sentence was the most telling that Khan is perfectly well aware how much damage has already been done. Imagine watching your operational management team destroy value so comprehensively in such a short period of time. What a mess.

So great to see Meyer exposed for the classless piece of shit, phony, arrogant prick that he has always been. I hope the Jags get to keep some of the money owed to him.

Like others, I would love to see Lawrence get a competent HC and see what the kid can do. I would hope it is not McDaniels though. . . .
I think the issue with Lawrence is that he needs a competent offensive line in order for us to see what he can do.

Having said that, a head coach who doesn't (appear to) hate his job, his coaches and his players would also be helpful.

I think this shows the increasing value of special teams as Meyer basically floated until it came out that he kicked the kicker. And you just can’t do that. The modern slang would note this as “Kicks or it didn’t happen.”

Merged the two threads on this subject. Also copied (rather than moving) a couple posts to the new coaching carousel thread, as they are germane to both discussions.

Have to say I expected him to be fired but only after the season. This isn't college football, there's no real upside firing coaches during the season.

Will say that I would expect the Jags to go after an NFL retread. McDaniels maybe?

Treating your players like absolute shit isn't really seen as a negative in college, it's kinda what the whole system is built on.
Yet, a coach needs to be able to walk into a recruit’s home and tell his parents, with some credibility, that he’ll take care of the young man. Urban Meyer was able to do that for years. I don’t see how he will be able to do it now. Keeping up appearances is important, and Meyer failed to do that this season.

Talk about a situation where players TRULY hate their coach!

I have friends who are Ohio State fanatics - some are alumni, some just live in Ohio - and they swear by Meyer. I mean, I guess I get it...he was hugely successful there, and if winning is all that matters to you, yeah. But these stories - and as I read more about him the more I see stuff that happened in Florida and Ohio State and now Jacksonville - are very disturbing. I didn't know much about him other than that he won a TON in college and that these Ohio State fans thought he walked on water.

But man...what a disaster. Probably he should be completely done with coaching, but I bet some desperate college program gives him one more try. And I bet he finds a way to win a lot more games.

I suspect that my sarcasm detector is on the fritz, but I don’t think kicking the kicker was the tipping point. However, the fact that the (former) kicker was speaking on the record about the incident was probably foreshadowing a torrent of shit about to flow down on the Jags. My guess is that Kahn knew this and decided to move.

I don’t know, it could be seen as Meyer assaulting a player. That might have been the kind of contractual “out” that Khan felt would let him shitcan Urban and not pay him another dime.

Kahn made he right choice, but as far as his reputation goes, it doesn't matter. If the Jaguars continue to struggle, he'll be remembered as the owner that hired Urban Meyer, not the one who fired him.

Still, fuck Urban Meyer. Usually a person has some redeeming qualities. Pretty hard to find a guy so dislikeable in all aspects of his life.

I am amazed at how quickly and completely Meyer has destroyed his reputation. I guess anything is possible, but it's hard to see any college team hire him. And he certainly will not be on ESPN again, they wouldn't touch him with a ten foot pole.

This guy was a champion at two schools. And now he's absolutely a joke.

Seems like "kicks or it didn't happen" was the tell. You need to upgrade the OS of your detector. It's wildly out of date. :)

Swinney is upset that his (and most head coaches) power and authority in the game is being eroded by the changes (players gaining more freedom and autonomy). I can't imagine he's anxious to move to the professional ranks where the head coach/GM has even less control/power. College "ball coaches" like Swinney and Meyer get off on having unchecked authority. Dealing with grown men who don't have to supplicate themselves to their whims is not their wheelhouse, as Meyer's disastrous stint has shown.

Agreed, except soon he’ll be running hisgame back on teenagers desperate for a break and on coeds in his next college nest. College football can really be an abomination

Swinney is as odious as Meyer. He's a fake spiritual jerk who is both two faced and weirdly defensive about everything. And it is really funny he's complaining about the NIL because, as you say, it now levels the playing field that I have no doubt Clemson was abusing to their advantage. Swinney also needs to show he can win without Trevor Lawrence.

Landing the #1 QB prospect in the country probably will help with that.

But also...he won the national title with DeShaun Watson as his QB, so he's already "won without Trevor Lawrence".

I'm not sure. Petrino had a pretty spectacular flameout at Arkansas and still managed to claw his way back to a prominent coaching gig. Hugh Freeze is building Liberty towards respectability and already has a top 25 finish after an even bigger scandal at Ole Miss. There's always going to be a smaller program willing to take the hit to their rep by hiring one of these guys.

The only really bad part of this saga going forward is the poor college that hires him for another job next season. It will be one of those schools that's perennially towards the bottom of a Power 5 conference and think he'll make them relevant again and don't have the scruples or high academic standards. He won't go back to the Big 10 and the Big 12 is falling apart. My money is on Arizona.

Fair enough. But, of course, that further proves the point that Dabo can only win with generational talent QBs.
You don't know that to be true. All we know is that he's won two national championships, both with great quarterbacks. Doesn't mean he CAN'T win without one. We have to wait and see. But now that he's got the #1 QB prospect, if he wins another title in the next few years, you will still be able to say this, right?

But more to the point: Who cares? A huge part of college coaching is recruiting great players, and if he's able to recruit top QB talent and then wins national championships with them...good for him (I guess...I've never been a Clemson fan so I'm not exactly rooting for this).

And it takes a lot of talent to beat programs like Alabama. Including QB talent.

Boorish sexual behavior will be forgiven after an appropriate period of time if you can win. (Even Rick Pitino is back in coaching.) What won’t be easily forgiven is that Meyer treated his employees and players like they were his servants and he refused to take any responsibility for his failures.

Still, based on what we know now, I agree that he’ll coach again if he wants to. The unknown factor is what we will know in a week or two.

I think this is right. The plaid sports-coat booster crowd will justify it with "that was the NFL, with their spoiled thugs who reject authority."
Too bad UMass already decided to bring Don Brown back. (I think I'm kidding.)

It’s a weird thing to ding him for being able to both recruit and win with generational QBs. It’s not like he lucked into the first pick or anything. Plus college football is full of coaches that squander the careers of that level of player.

Agree with everyone saying he’ll get another crack at a college coaching job. But as also noted, it will very likely be middle to lower rung power 5 programs, with delusions of becoming a national champion contender. But the days of him being at or near the top of the list when one of the major, prestigious jobs becomes available, are, I think, over. Pitino is a good comp.

I'm not sure if Lamb going to the press was the final nail in the coffin or the justification. When Lawrence said that the drama needed to stop it was subtle/not subtle implication that Meyer needed to go (not that it wasn't clear long before). He could have been shit canned before that for any number of reasons, particularly after kicking a player, not traveling back to FLA so he could get drunk and grope 20 year olds, or threatening retaliation against employees, but coverage of the assault seems to be good cover for making your generational talent QB happy. Regardless, good riddence, fuck Meyer and everything he pretends to stand for.

I understand that this is Urban Meyer’s thread, but please explain exactly how was Clemson ‘abusing [it] to their advantage,” and if they were, how it was different from any other power conference college. Feel free to start a new thread if you don’t want to clog up the Meyer thread.

Insert eyes rolling back in head emoji HERE.
Clemson has had talent on both sides of the ball for the better part of a decade. Take a look at the success of Clemson football players in the NFL for further evidence. Isn’t that one of the things a quality program wants out of a coach(ie., ability to recruit)? I don’t have much stomach for Swinney’s wearing his religion on his sleeve, but that’s his business. He has built a quality program. So, maybe give some credit where it’s due.

Except that according to the reports, the Jags were informed in real time about the incident. While the publicity surrounding the incident is bad, the incident itself, by itself, cannot be the cause. Of course, it can be lumped in with the other conduct that when considered in its totality constitutes cause.

My brother texted me saying the Jags should hire Brian Daboll. I think that would be a pretty good choice given his pedigree and how he has helped develop Josh Allen. Bieniemy could also be another good choice, although his star may be falling due to KC's struggles this year.

A bully and a coward. I bet he wouldn't have tried kicking one of this linebackers. He is a loathsome cur.
This is just so unsurprising. He is one of the coaches that would berate student newspaper reporters for asking difficult questions. To me, that attitude presaged what happened to him here. As did "I have to get out for my heart so I can live for my family" until Ohio State came calling.

Reading the accounts of the story it was brought home how difficult and unpleasant the job of general counsel of the Jags must be. I hope it pays well. It sounds like she probably tried to handle it all the right way but is inside an organization of children that does what they want and was quick to let her hang out to dry. Again, she’s probably highly compensated, but that seems miserable.

Byron Leftwich would be my first choice

Played there and learned shit from Tom I bet. And (also) has a coaching ring. League could use more minority head coaches, too.

Don't sleep on Josh McDaniels. I know it seems far fetched, but he would be starting in a place with a young QB who was thought highly enough to be drafted #1. Unless McDaniels thinks Trevor is a bust (and he may), he may view the job as a chance to go to a place where he'll have a couple of years to develop Lawrence while working with the GM to rebuild the OL and defense.

Byron Leftwich seems like he should be at the top of the list, IMO. He has a ring, plus a history with Jax. And to my knowledge, therehavent been any rumblings of any negatives in his closet.

When I think of Leftwich, I always remember that game when he was at Marshall where he was so injured that his OLinemen were literally carrying him down the field during the 2-minute drill of some important comeback (maybe a bowl game??).

Anyway, after the clownshow/shitshow that was Meyer's tenure, bringing in someone who will naturally command respect and will give it in return will be key to revitalizing that franchise.

Meyer has shot his way out of the SEC, B1G, and the NFL, but I do think there are remaining P5 schools that will sniff around after a year or two, especially the increasingly irrelevant Big XII and Pac12. Oklahoma? Oregon? UCLA (if Chipper doesn't go back to Oregon)? Washington? Oregon St.? West Virginia? Even Kansas... there are plenty of state schools who will take him on, warts and all.

P.S. 31 players arrested in six years at Florida? And tOSU took him on enthusiastically? Big universities will overlook almost everything.

That's really something. I mean, with all this public information about Meyer and his actions it is amazing that his kid wrote this. I can only imagine what we do not know.

Some of the replies are great.

"Urban Meyer is the highest paid kicker in the league at $4.5M per year."
Maybe his next step is a trip to Tuberville.
