Tommy John is likely I would think. Kind of a shame to see, even if he is a dirty, godless, commie Yankee.

Would have thought him on the shelf had more to do with a  neck strain from watching those 42 home runs he gave up last night leave the park.

These partial UCL tears almost never respond to rest and rehab - have to think a visit to Jimmy isn't too far off

Not familiar with their SP depth. Who gets the call here?
Nuno. Starting for them today, almost certainly keeps it as long as he doesn't suck today.

Not so sure about this...Phelps would be the logical guy, despite his bullpen role (in which he's been shaky). It was down to Phelps and Pineda for the 5th spot at the end of spring training.

Yes and probably not.

I said this to a friend on Facebook who is lamenting the (probable) loss of Nova for the year... This might end up not being terrible for the Yankees long term.  The chances that the team was going to stay healthy enough to be a serious contender were always a bit slim.  That's just the nature being an older team.  For Nova, getting this surgery out of the way early means they should have a good run of healthy years from him from 2016-2020 or so and that means they will be (hopefully for Yankees fans) building around a trio of young, very solid pitchers, making constructing a playoff contending roster a bit easier.

Jeff Niemann is a mildly interesting name on that list, anyone know the latest on him? His surgery was in April 2013.

Or, if you are like me and never thought much of Ivan Nova the pitcher, then it is great loss because they just lost his age 27 season and he will likely continue to get worse as he ages.

Well yeah, obviously overall it's never good when a pitcher gets seriously hurt.  But if we operate under the assumption that his elbow was going to go at some point (and no, we can't be absolutely certain it would), it's better to get this out of the way now rather than later, when they may have a roster better suited for a sustained run.

Nuno pitched decently but his stuff just isn't that impressive. Phelps' isn't either, but I'd take still take him over Nuno. Will be interesting if he struggles here, on in the 6th.

As a dirty godless commie, I would like to protest this association.

Nova will be a free agent after the 2016 season. He entered 2014 with over 3 years of service time. So this will be a lost year, then the Yankees will pay him Arb2 money to hopefully come back around the start of May (if he decides quickly to get the surgery, could be longer if he tries rehab and then delays surgery)  and pitch for 5 months next season working back into form, and then they'll probably get one good season from him in 2016. Honestly I wouldn't be shocked if they just decided to nontender him. He's already making $3.3M this year and he'll probably get a raise in arb 2 even if he's on the shelf. Paying him inflated 2nd and 3rd year arbitration salaries to hope he comes back from TJS and happens to give you one of his good years isn't necessary a great gamble.

What would happen if you tried to sew up or tighten the partial tear, keeping his natural tendon in place? Is it always better to go for the new tendon?

Maybe not Jimmy.

When Kazuhiro Sasaki needed elbow surgery when he was pitching for Seattle, he opted to have it done in Japan.

If I had the choice of waking up from surgery in a hospital full of ignorant foreigners who couldn't understand a word I said, or waking up from surgery in my home country, I'd choose home.

Good question.  It would never work - the ligament that is left is too attenuated and shitty to make it work

So... Nova should have his UCL reconstructed in the Dominican?

Hmmm...

This is only for a very small set of home countries.

Any affect on pitching rotation order?

The only tricky thing will be that they won't really have a long man until Nuno is ready to pitch again. Robertson will be activated on Tuesday, and if it's Marshall that goes back down, they'll have to keep their fingers crossed that they get some innings from their next few starters.

They lost their closer, 1Bman, backup SS and backup catcher, so I hardly think its their first challenge this year.

I think SP depth is actually one of the Yankees strong points, so expect they should be able to survive 1-2 injuries to the rotation.

I don't like their depth at SS or 1B though, but every team has a couple of positions where they are vulnerable to injury

If they want to stretch Phelps out they will since I imagine he gets the first call if needed.

Probably a good bet Tanaka, Pineda and Kuroda give them innings against Boston (hear tell CC he is being skipped over and pitches Friday). Red Sox have struggled against RHP'ers this year (13th in AL in OPS)

You called it - Nuno is the 5th starter. A bit surprised but I'm open to it. I feel like he might have some initial success but not when the league gets a book on him.

Yeah, I don't think he'll last all season either but he did well enough to be given the chance to run with it.

Also it frees up Phelps to be the long man this week, otherwise neither would have been available except in emergency for at least tonight and tomorrow.
