How many people (not companies/groups/organizations) have sued the NFL? Al Davis, Brian Flores, and Jon Gruden. Am I missing anyone? Perhaps, but either way, it would be fitting.
I thought it was a Tom Flores reference, the lawsuit thing is also funny

I was a bit depressed when Brady left. Sad when Bill left. But I would fucking love Bill coaching for Tom.

On a year to year contract, LOL.
Reports they were at odds and didn't care for each other. Strange that the media got this one wrong.

It's perfectly possible that they were in fact at odds and the relationship had soured by the end of Brady's Patriots career, but with some distance they've reconnected and have recognized those years weren't representative of the entire experience.

I may be in the minority but I feel like this could be a lot of fun for BB. He has total control, he is likely going to paid more than any of his players and if he succeeds he will beloved by a whole new set of fans.

Wrestling with the NFL machine has its own charms but at this spot he can implement his vision fully. Given what we have seen to date, it doesn't seem like any NFL teams would offer him that sort of power.
I agree with you. The talent acquisition piece of CFB has become largely, purely ,transactional, essentially like pro football, which BB obviously has tons of experience with. In terms of the culture building and X/O coaching part of it, I think he comes into it with a significant advantage. Throw in the fact that he’ll be competing in a weak conference like the ACC, and I think he could run wild, and have a lot of success fairly quickly.

The Bears’ public interview list is 13 long, not counting the denied request to speak with McCarthy. Apparently all first round interviews are virtual (so they should be done by Sat) before in-person meetings with select candidates.

I get the old Al Davis “interview a bunch of smart coaches and pick hero brains about your team.” But at some point they’re pulling in unqualified or unserious candidates.

The list:
  • Aaron Glenn
  • Mike Vrabel
  • Brian Flores
  • Arthur Smith
  • Pete Carroll, former Seattle Seahawks head coach
  • Ben Johnson, Lions offensive coordinator
  • Mike McCarthy, current Dallas Cowboys head coach (request denied)
  • Thomas Brown, Bears interim head coach
  • Anthony Weaver, Dolphins defensive coordinator
  • Mike Kafka, New York Giants offensive coordinator
  • Drew Petzing, Arizona Cardinals offensive coordinator
  • Todd Monken, Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator
  • David Shaw, Broncos senior personnel executive and former Stanford head coach
  • Matt Campbell, Iowa State head coach

I think that some of the interviews are less about being their Head Coach but potentially being a coordinator. So like maybe they find their HC and let him know that they really liked X, Y or Z for OC or DC.

Got a kick out of a report on NFL.com saying the Jaguars may be interested in BB. If that happens, I imagine Mac is cut from the team in a heartbeat.

Perhaps clearing the way to offer BB or another big name full roster control.

Vrabel? I think Vrabel in Vegas is really interesting. They have some trench pieces, and without a top QB expectations will be reasonable

I know it's been talked about and mentioned in the media, but with the Raiders starting over yet again would Brady walk away from his Fox gig after the Super Bowl and become even more involved in running as Vegas. Not as GM, but more of an everyday presence

Tom doesn't strike me as one of the world's great intellectuals, but I don't think he's dumb enough to give up on a $375m contract unless it's taken from him.

Seems like it has to be, right? Telesco seemed solid. Or at least as solid as one could be after one season and one decent draft.

I'd like to know what @Gunfighter 09 thinks of this.
As ESPN put it:

Telesco, hired in part for his success in drafting, nailed the Raiders' top three picks last spring.

He went with the best player available, rather than picking to fill a need, with the No. 13 pick and selected tight end Brock Bowers, who set an NFL rookie single-season receiving record with 112 catches and was named to the Pro Bowl.

In the second round, Telesco drafted offensive lineman Jackson Powers-Johnson, who started games at both left guard and center.

And in the third round, Telesco took DJ Glaze, who settled into a starting role at right tackle, which had been the Raiders' top position of need entering the draft.

Injuries wreaked havoc with the Raiders' roster this season as, per the team, 31.8% of their Week 1 starters spent time on injured reserve (tied for the highest percentage in the league) and, with the second-youngest roster in the NFL (average age was 25 years, 344 days), 37.6% of the snaps played were by first- or second-year players (the third-highest mark in the league).
Like, what the hell more were they expecting from him? Getting that right is the #1 job requirement, unless tensions with the head coach become unmanageable. If Eliot Wolf had had that draft, Jerod Mayo might still be employed. Probably not, but it would have meaningfully affected his chances. And at least, we'd have been thrilled to continue to have him around.

The Raiders may have gotten the shit end of the stick with losing Jon Gruden for non-football reasons (to put it mildly), but they sure seem to have too little patience with their football decision-makers. No one has made it through as much as a 4th year as HC since Gruden went 4 from 1998-2001. Since then:

Bill Callahan, 2002 - 2003
Norv Turner, 2004 - 2005
Art Shell, 2006
Lane Kiffin, 2007 - 2008 (fired 4 games into his second season)
Tom Cable, 2008 (interim) - 2010
Hue Jackson, 2011 (Al Davis dies midseason, Mark takes over)
Dennis Allen, 2012 - 2014 (fired midseason)
Tony Sparano, 2014 (interim)
Jack Del Rio, 2015 - 2017
Jon Gruden, 2018 - 2021 (resigned midseason)
Rich Bisaccia, 2021 (interim)
Josh McDaniels, 2022 - 2023 (fired midseason)
Antonio Pierce, 2023 (interim) - 2024

That is a monument to impatience. Since 2002, only Del Rio (2016, lost WC) and Gruden/Bisaccia (2021, lost WC) have made the playoffs. Not that it bought either of them any more rope from Mark Davis.

There's an analogy here to "if everyone you meet is an asshole, maybe you're the asshole".

I didn't think of Tom Flores, but as you suggest, it's funny either way. After all, this is the same franchise who brought back Art Shell in 2006, after he was no longer coaching, and made Tom Walsh, who hadn't coached anywhere in 6 years and was running a bed and breakfast and serving as the mayor of a small town, their offensive coordinator, so bringing back Tom Flores doesn't seem too far of a reach.

I would guess Telesco got fired because none of their top coach targets wanted him to stay

Agreed. Also, there’s something to be said for having a new GM, new head, coach, and potentially your QB of the future all aligned.
Agreed on both. It's still a raw deal for a guy who put together a pretty good draft and yet only got one year in Vegas. He never got to hire a coach, either, since AP was hired before him and now he's not part of this round (although the last coach he hired as a GM was Brandon Staley, and that was a horrible hire).

I can’t link it but The Athletic Football pod had a good coaching openings one yesterday with Robert Mays and Mike Sando. Sando is definitely an “establish the culture” guy over the “nab the hot OC” type. He had some interesting things to say about the openings and how they might be viewed by candidates.

Most interesting to me was how they saw the NO opening, which most of us would see as bad as fans because of the cap situation and talent on hand. He said candidates would look and see that’s a situation that could be cleaned up in a year and an ownership group that gives its coaches time (citing how patient they were with Dennis Allen). He thinks Aaron Glenn might be their top target because he coached there for years and they like to hire coaches familiar with their operation.

He absolutely dunked on Woody Johnson and the Jets. I did not realize that Woody’s 18 year old son is involved in the decisions there because Woody wants him groomed to take over. Sando said something like, “You think Mike Vrabel wants to deal with an 18 year old?”

To Sando, these candidates will look at ownership meddling and organizational instability as redder flags than a bad roster and/or a bad cap situation. The latter things are temporary and mutable, while the former things are not going anywhere.

Is Telesco a guy you might allow to hire his own coach? Or a guy your coach might bring in to do the GM stuff?

I hope he has a relationship with Vrabel, and it is a good one. (They can kick Wolf to the side.)
Vrabel's list is basically public, it's Cowden at the top. As to Telesco... kind of doubt it, no history there, and Vrabel's comments/actions strongly imply he wants to run the show and the GM works for him... you usually do not hire an experienced guy for that role.

Yet another reason why BBs decision was so odd: timing. The UNC job would likely have been open to him in Jan/Feb if he continued to feign interest. And he could have gotten an actual feel for his NFL market instead of speculating. So strange.
I don't see any way UNC just sits with the job open through a transfer portal window while waiting for him to strike out with the NFL.
