Are Achilles injuries as devastating long-term in the NFL as they are in the NBA?

He's still expected back for regular season

We will see ...fell in draft due to problem with knee then had procedure on same knee....may have no issues going forward or he may join his other Bulldog buddy who had knee issues in college and is no longer with the team....it is a crap shoot.

Yeah, the Patriots rolled the dice--a top 10 talent that slid. That's the downside.

What a kick in the pants. Wynn was going to play an important role for this team. Have to hope he can come back healthy next season. What a terrible way to start a career.

Michel or Wynn??? Michel was far from a top 10 talent. Drafted exactly where he was expected to be drafted, late 1st -mid 2nd. Multiple draft profiles and scouts/GMs had him going then. For an RB to be a top 10 talent they need to be pretty special. Michel is intriguing but far from polished. His fumble rate alone would keep him out of the top 10.

Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy. Well this fucking sucks. I get that they take some guys with injury histories. Wynn had a shoulder ailment. The injury bad luck is brutal. We need a Greek goat sacrificing cleansing ritual. As the resident Greek here I’ll be happy to do it next weekend.

The Football gods have been malakas lately.

They roll the dice a lot with guys who had injury concerns coming out of college.
Yup. Sometimes it works out, of late it has not.

Some in the game thread were all over this possibility last night. Was there a tweet from our beloved $10 in real time?

Edit. I now see the tweet was from Chao.

I'll gladly take all of those for 1 Richard Seymour, though.

He really doesn't have an injury history, at least not more than just about everyone who plays football-yes he had off-season shoulder surgery but he only missed one game in four years of college. (Also pretty hard to say that an achilles injury has anything to do with a shoulder injury).

Sometimes guys just get hurt. It sucks. Except for Mason and Brown who now have much better chances to get paid to stay here because it's hard to figure out if Wynn would be a competent starter in 2019.

Yup. No red flags on him.

Plus the bubble wrap argument had better not surface unless the proponent has a persuasive argument for how a rookie can start at tackle with no preseason games under his belt.

It just sucks.

Timeline that may be entirely coincidental:

Jon Robinson promoted to Director of College Scouting

2008 Mayo
2009 Chung
2010 McCourty
2011 Solder
2012 Hightower

Robinson leaves to be Director of Player Personnel with Tampa

2013 released
2014 bust/released
2015 pick had his option declined

Reports are that Wynn is a high character guy and a genuinely big-teddy-bear type off the field. I didn't mean it in a sarcastic way.

Yeah that was the point though. I didn't directly say it but yes they do draft some guys with injury histories but... Wynn wasn't a huge concern minus his shoulder which did get some attention pre-draft. Even if you don't count that injury as part of the normal wear and tear of the game, and I am fine with discounting it heavily, he was not a major injury concern. It just is shitty luck. So basically what you said.

The fuck you mean the achillies bone don't connect to the shoulder? I have a college degree in anatomy and recreation so I know what I am talking about.

The OL will be fine. Brown, Thuney, Andrews, Mason, Cannon is a very strong group.

But this still sucks. Man.

Nothing much to add other than this really blows. Hopefully he's our only major injury this year. It's been rough the past couple years.

If the 2 starting tackles don;t miss much time, then things should be OK.

so we're right back where we started with no improvements to the OL?
If the Patriots play D- defense in the SB they’d be preparing for a Thursday night game in a couple weeks. OL was not as is not a problem (knock on wood, etc).

I forgot about the Trent Brown trade.

Still disheartening the team has no luck on draft picks and injuries.

Forgive my naivete, but is there ANY way this could have been prevented? More stretching maybe? Hot/cold therapy, muscle work for the surrounding area, more hydration? Or are there no preventative measures for blowing an Achilles?

Presumably there are always things you could do to lessen the risk if injury to any specific part of the body. But this then leads to the question of why should Wynn have suspected or even knew to suspect that his Achilles was at risk?
