I've done some looking through the forum and haven't found anything. Be happy to delete if this is addressed elsewhere.

Situation: iPhone 5. Runs smoothly for all applications. Nothing using remarkable resources.

Only when using as a phone (god forbid)...unit overheats noticeably within 1 minute and battery drains at a remarkable rate (like 90% in 5 minutes).

Searched Google and came across lots of Apple forum complaints (spanning many years and many models), but none limited to phone use only. Suggested "solutions" were bullshit.

This must have something to do with cell towers, right? It happens in all locations, whether or not Wifi or 4G are available.

Carrier: Verizon

LTE: Enabled

Cellular Data: Enabled

Roaming: Voice Only

Call Time: Current Period (??) 5.4 GB / Current Period Roaming 23.8 KB

Use Cellular Data for:

App Store
MLB At Bat
Calendar
Clock
(Password App)
Find iPhone
Google
Google Maps
Mail
PayByPhone
Safari
Settings
Weather

Battery Usage (last 7 days):

Phone 25%
Home & Lock Screen 21%
Safari 21%
Mail 12%
(remainder minor)

It would be really nice if Apple actually had their own support site instead of reading what the general public has to say. Fortunately I have SoSH.

Should I just dip it in ice water before calling someone?

First thought is, is your iPhone 5 in the battery replacement program? I'd search your S/N there. Apple may give you a whole new phone if it is and you explain your other problems.

The first thing I would try is to reset all network settings, it should be under the various reset options in the Settings app. Disregard if you've already tried this sort of thing, but if it's having weird cell network behavior that's the first thing I'd try.
