I have a question about iRemote. I've seen this highly recommended by several people (on this site and others). From what I understand, it connects to your home wireless network so you can access your iTunes library from anywhere in the house.

Is that correct?
Does it do more than that?
Most importantly, can I use it to access my iTunes library via the 3G network instead of my wireless network? In other words, can I listen to my library while on vacation or in the car without having to load down my internal memory with the song files themselves? I don't think it does this, but that would be incredible and certainly a reason to save a few $$ on a smaller sized unit (8GB instead of 16 or the rumored 32).

As for AOL Radio, Flycast, etc. The stations most important for me are CNN, Fox, ESPN, and Radio Disney. I rarely listen to any of the other XM/Sirius stations in our cars. Obviously, RD is for when I'm taking the kids somewhere, although my wife listens to it a lot when she's alone and driving to and from work. I'd like to be able to pick up WEEI from time to time (trade deadlines, etc.), but it's hardly important. I've been out of that market so long I couldn't tell you who is who in terms of on-air personalities.

I never pre-purchase movie tickets, so that feature of Fandango is completely unimportant to me. If a movie is going to be so packed that I may not get a ticket when I arrive, I'd rather hold off and wait until the theater isn't as busy. I don't NEED to be the first to see anything, unlike many of my friends. I just want something that will give me the names and starting times of movies playing in my vicinity along with brief descriptions and maybe some reviews - from actual people, not critics. Critics loved The Piano. I want those critics who convinced me to see it to die. That's only one example. :rolling: Normally, I use hollywood.com on my home computer for this, but I'm open to better suggestions and will check out the app CTHP listed above.

Skype - If I'm on vacation out of the country and I walk into an Internet Cafe, library, or wherever else they have wi-fi access, am I to understand that I can use skype to call family and friends in the U.S. and not incur the outrageous international roaming charges (as in, the calls would be free)? Are their limitations to this (like I can't call land line phones or something)?

I had seen Saving Benjis on several lists but I agree having Amazon Mobile makes that app pretty redundant. As it is, when on my desktop computer, I always check Amazon for price comparisons anyhow, so having the mobile version of that site on an iPhone would be great. I can't tell you how many times I've called the house and left voicemails for myself to check prices on certain products I stumble across to see if the price in store is any good and to check the customer reviews. Having that information on hand would save a lot of time and effort in that respect.

StepTrak Lite - I saw a couple of pedometer apps and wondered how accurate/good they were. I need to drop another 50lbs or so and this app might be nice to have even if it's only remotely accurate.

I couldn't find ePocrates RX, only epocrates. I'd like to get this one for my wife - the pharmacist. She loves apps like this and she could probably use it at work as another reference source.

You've got a ton of apps listed that I hadn't seen. I'll give each of them a quick look over the next few days.

Thanks for sharing. Hopefully more people will do the same as I'm sure these lists benefit more than just me.

sox311, thanks. I'll have to check a lot of those out as well :rolling:

edit: one more app I've looked for but can't find. Is there anything that will record phone conversations? This might be a privacy issue that Apple would prefer to avoid, but I try to send most of my important correspondence (such as the back-and-forth between Geico and myself regarding an accident in which a Geico client slammed into my car last summer) in written form (e-mail) but the other parties often call me back instead and I have to take notes. Having a permanent record of what was said would be extremely handy in those instances.

Also, in my quest for more information about the iPhone, I keep stumbling along the phrases jailbreak and unlock. My understanding is that jailbreak means to manipulate the OS somehow so that you can use 3rd party apps that aren't available via iTunes App Store and that unlock means to make your iPhone work on other carriers instead of only AT&T.

I'm an AT&T customer anyhow, so I'd have no interest in unlocking my phone (unless I'm missing something) and I'm a bit leery of trusting anyone that Apple vetted and found unworthy of the App Store. Maybe they're safe and solid applications, but they could just as likely be something that will render my future iPhone useless.

Are either of these things illegal? Is it worth it to do one or both to an iPhone? If yes, specifically why would you recommend it?

That's what she said.
Recording conversations - I don't know of any.

Unlocking - No reason to do it if you are on ATT, I don't even know if you can unlock the iPhone 3G yet.

Jailbreaking - Some people love it, me I don't care. I like how easy it is to use the iPhone to all its stock features and to update it easily when new software comes out. I know a few people to have jailbroken their phones and they love it, video recording, NES emulators, other things.

I don't care to void my warranty and spend more time with the phone when I need to update the software, so I won't ever do it. Others that have more time and like to mess with their gadgets, go for it. But the iPhone is plenty of fun and useful without jailbreaking it.

Yaz, the iRemote app works as a remote control for the iTunes library you have it connected to, so all it can do is control the commands, but it doesn't actually play music. For example, I have it connected to my roommate's computer, which has Airtunes that feeds music to the soundsystem downstairs. So I can change songs, skip, pause, etc while I'm downstairs listening to music, rather than having to manually make the changes on the computer itself. Very very handy, but does need a wireless connection.

What you are looking for is SimplifyMedia. This is a program you download on the comp, and it syncs with your iTunes library. Then, you download the app, and through it you can stream the music from your library (and any of your friends that have it) without having to have the songs on your iPhone. You can do this over Edge and 3G (and wireless, of course). The one caveat is that the comp has to be on and iTunes must be running for it to work. Hope this helps.

Wow! I just visited the SimplifyMedia website and watched the two minute video about the product. That's awesome. I could buy the 8GB iPhone and have access at all times to hundreds of GBs of music on my computer (I probably have 10GB or so, but still). I notice that it won't play any files purchased through iTunes, but most of my files are .mp3 anyhow and I can always try to convert the iTunes purchased songs to .mp3.

Does this product (or another) work the same way for video files? I've got a ton of kids movies and several for myself on my home computer. Being able to access them remotely would be nice.

Thanks for the info, Four Peters!

Figured it would be best to revive this thread for something specifically about apps rather than the phones or data plans themselves.

1. Anyone know of an app that I can sync with my Microsoft Money 2007? I'd like to have my checkbook register with me, if possible, but I haven't used a paper one for years now that I keep it all in Money. I know Nip and others love Mint - would something like that work? I know there are checkbook apps, but I've got years worth of data in my register that I'm too lazy to recreate and was hoping to find something that would sync so any changes I made while out would appear in Money the next time I synced my iPhone.
2. I asked this several months ago, but many new apps have come out (and some of you are more in tune with rumored apps than I am), any word on an app that will record conversations?
3. password apps - I know there are several that allow you to store all of your passwords (banking, credit cards, e-mail accounts, website log-ins, etc), do any of you use them? Are they secure? I would definitely want one that allowed me to wipe my information should I lose my iPhone, of course.
4. I'm anxiously awaiting the TomTom app, but I also know that G-Map is pretty popular. Anyone have experience with iPhone navigation apps on a 3G or have any inside scoop on the release date and pricing of the TomTom app and the mount they'll sell separately?

Please bear in mind that my 3G iPhone is not jailbroken or unlocked and I really don't have much interest in doing so - bit of a fraidy cat, I guess.

Figured I'd bump this thread again, rather than starting a new one or adding to a more generic iPhone thread (seeing that this is app specific).

I'm gearing my Back to School App search toward my oldest (rising 8th grader) as she's likely getting an iTouch in the coming months (waiting to see the new line I've read about).

Right now, I'm focusing on flashcard apps and I can't believe how many there are to choose from. It's almost overwhelming. Most of the apps I've found are specific to a certain subject (sign language, spanish, geometry, LSAT, etc) so I've whittled through those and come up with a list I'm still considering.

  • Mental Case - $2.99
  • Cram - $6.99
  • Flash-Me - $3.99
  • Touchcards - $1.99
  • iFlipr - $4.99
  • StudyCards - $9.99
  • Flashcardz - $.99
  • Study Aid - $1.99
  • Study & Me - $.99
  • Study Flash - $1.99
  • Notecards - $1.99
  • Flashy - $.99
  • iCards - $.99
  • gFlash Pro - $4.99

The above list is in no specific order, just how they came up with a recent search.

I'm leaning toward Cram, but I was hoping to hear from any of you who might have experience using one or more of the above (or another app I may have omitted/missed).

Things that are important (or at least desirable) include:

  1. The ability to generate cards online, rather than just via the iPhone.
  2. If it requires a separate computer-based program, that program should be Windows as I don't have a Mac. I've seen a few that require Macs with no Windows options available.
  3. I don't care about the ability to add photos or sound (for now). I guess it's a nice feature, but it's not vital to my search.

Also, I'm looking for a good graphing calculator app. I'll be honest in that I've never used a graphing calculator before, so I have ZERO idea as to what is vital and what is fluff on the graphing calculators I've seen in stores and the apps I've seen online. Free is great, of course, but I don't mind paying for a good app for her. Remember, this is for an 8th grader, not a college student (if that matters in terms of necessary functions). Her school sent out a supply list at the beginning of summer and suggested a TI-83. She currently has a TI-34II (from a supply list a couple of years ago). I believe the TI-83 would run me about $90 anyhow, so an app that does what it's capable of should still save me some money.

Lastly, I'm looking to get her a microphone to record her classes. IMHO, her study habits are abhorrent and I'd like to work with her on note-taking skills, among other things. I've seen two in particular that I'm interested in - the Mike and Brando Mini Capsule. Big difference in price between the two (although the Mike is about $20 less on Amazon than on their site), so money possibly saved on the calculator could go towards this.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. If you're a developer and don't have a Lite version of an app (some/many of the above do), a promo code would guarantee an iTunes review from me (if positive) or an e-mail/PM with suggestions/comments (if negative).

Yaz, what flash card software did you end up buying? I bought NoteCards this morning, but now I'm looking for an app that lets me put pictures on the cards as well. Have you come across anything like that?

cutman - gFlash Pro (and the Lite version with banner ads) will allow you to add photos. I'm pretty sure a few others will as well. Overall, I still like Cram the best, although gFlash seems to get better overall reviews (at least in terms of volume). I'll likely play with both and see which works best for her.

np, glad I'm able to help out once in awhile, instead of just reaping the benefits of this forum.

btw - Study Flash is free today. It's VERY basic, but may be all you need. I just downloaded it myself - what they hell, it's free. If they make a nice improvement in an upgrade, hopefully all owners will be grandfathered in and get it free :)

Also, Stacks is a great program, but only if you don't want to make your own cards. I spoke with the developer last week and he told me that this may be a future upgrade, but he likes having control over the cards to insure integrity of the app - understandable, but I'd love to use that incredible UI with my daughter's studies.

Napkin - no reason not to buy from Wal-Mart

HOWEVER -- I'd suggest holding off for one month. The rumor is that in September, the newest iTouchs will have not only a camera, but a videocamera with microphone. The mic would be incredible for using Skype, if that interests you. The other part of the rumor I heard is that the prices will be the same as the current models. I'm holding off on buying one for my daughter because of this information. I hope it's more credible than most of the Sox trade threads on the Main Board every July :)

rage - are you hearing the same things I've heard? Anything to correct/add to what I responded to Napkin?

basically yeah. I hadn't heard about video, but I could see that. I think it will depend on the hardware/memory that's included. The iPod Touches already ran faster than that iPhones (pre-3GS), so it's definitely possible. Camera seems highly likely, as does mic. I'm sure pricing will be the same, if not even slightly lower. 9/9 is the day that I am hearing kicked around, and unlike the iPhones, the iPod refreshes seem to be available sooner.

Even if the camera/mic rumor doesn't pan out (which I think it probably will) it's still worth waiting at this point.

Hmm. Interesting, thanks. I'm going on a trip Sept 12 and kind of wanted to have it for that, so if it's out 9/9 that'd be all kinds of awesome.

Quick heads up for golfers out there with an iPhone. View Ti Golf, a pretty damned good program (although I'm still waiting for Golfshot Pro: GPS to drop in price for a full comparison) dropped today from $24.99 to $1.99. Get it before it jumps back up again.

Lastly, go with the invisible shield imho. The bodyguardz films are similar, and you get two for one, but they aren't as anti-glare as the IS's are. It got on my nerves after a little while, and I switched my bodyguardz out for the full-body Zagg IS.

CTHP- Took the plunge and got an Iphone this weekend, my life is changed forever! Do the Zagg IS cut down on glare? I purchased a silicon cover for the back of my phone but need something to protect the touch surface. The front shields that Apple sells are the same price as the Zaggs front shields, however the former is marketed as "anti glare" thanks Jay

The cradle of the game.
The new MLB At Bat 2009 app update allows a la carte purchasing of out-of-market games for $0.99 per game. Also includes customizable notifications.

Now I can be a hotel room hermit and watch the Sox live when I'm on the road without having to get MLB.tv. Very cool.

so how do these things work? there's a rumored "media event" on Sept 9 for the new touch announcement, does that mean if it's announced then that they'll be available that day? I fly out Sept 10 at 6, I'd love to be able to pick one up the night of the 9th or the morning of the 10th. And yes, it is all about me. :)

I wouldn’t count on it. If I remember correctly, even when they’re “available now” sometimes it takes a few days for all stores to have them. Oh, and the event is confirmed for 9/9, but that’s no big surprise.

Not happening. I say that with 99.9999% certainty. Also, the title of the invite is a Stones song “It’s only R&R but I like it.” Would have made sense, but I think it’s actually more of a coincidence.

I think there's a good chance you'll be able to pick one up on 9/9 if you have an Apple Store nearby. It's not uncommon at all for Apple Stores to have new products in stock the day they are announced.

The good news is there's an apple store about a block away from me. The bad news is they may not be ready yet
A wealth of evidence and a number of anonymous tipsters have indicated the likelihood that Apple will upgrade the iPod Nano and iPod Touch to include cameras. AppleInsider claims there have been technical issues when testing the camera-equipped iPods, which may delay Apple’s announcement at the event.
While it’s indeed plausible that the cameras are experiencing technical problems, we don’t feel this would delay the announcement. Even if there are issues to resolve, Apple will likely move forward with the announcement, then release the iPods to customers on a later date.

I guess we'll know soon enough...

So here’s the run down: the iPod touch is getting faster with OpenGL. Prices have been reduced to $199 for an 8GB model, $299 for 32GB and $399 for 64GB. What happened to the 16G model? Looks like it’s been sent to the scrap heap. It’s no longer on the Apple Web site.
The nano gets a camera, a pedometer and a FM radio. There are some new colors and some price points as well: $149 for 8GB and $179 for 16GB.

Damn. So now what do I do. The camera was going to be a nice little bonus but is it worth waiting for. Hmm.

I was just at an Apple store in NYC today to exchange my brand new 16gb touch. They don't have the new line in yet, and their prices haven't been updated either - so you're out of luck if you want a new one before your trip.

As for me, I was able to return mine for a full credit (I did have to tell them it was defective, which was not entirely untrue), and just ordered the new 32gig online. Sweet.

In case anyone still cares:

mac rumors
Another interesting possibility found in iFixit's teardown of the third-generation iPod touch was an empty space on the circuit board that could house a camera. The location is consistent with the location of the rumored iPod touch camera and is distinct from the previous-generation iPod touch design.
The finding is also consistent with a report from AppleInsider which claimed that the iPod touch with camera was a real product but had been scrapped about a month ago. The rumor site also believes that Apple is still planning on adding camera capabilities to the iPod touch in the near future.

apple insider
According to those familiar with situation, management gave the green light to equip the latest-gen touches with cams last year. But problems, as AppleInsider reported earlier in the week, began to crop up with the third party camera sensors Apple took receipt of earlier this year.
After several passes through quality assurance were met with less than stellar results in the time leading up to Wednesday's event, an executive decision was made a month ago to pull the cameras from the touches altogether, others familiar with the situation say. This is contrary to reports that suggest the matter unfolded in the final hours.
Nevertheless, Apple reportedly remains committed to delivering camera capabilities on the touch lineup as soon as possible. This update could arrive unexpectedly at existing price points on the 32GB and 64GB models, according to a third person claiming to have been briefed on the matter.

Wondering if any of you I-phone power users knows of a decent app to track money that is owed to me and/or that I owe to people. Not really talking about banks or other "official" type loans. Rather, I need away to track money that is owed to me by deadbeat friends that I have covered Patriots, Sox and concert tickets for etc.
I searched but didnt really find anything that seemed to fit. I downloaded Loan Tracker but it pretty much sucks as it has several missing componets.

I would also love a "most recommended" app update from CTHP and/or some of the others that posted a while back. I was new to the i-phone then and didn't pay much attention. I have very few apps that i use but would love to hear of any that you guys really like.

Thanks

We've come full circle. I asked about a BillMonk type app in the first post of this thread :).

Yeah, if anyone knows a good one please post about it!

We literally have the exact same apps with a variance of maybe 10%. Weird.

For you Starcraft fans "Warzone Incorporated" is pretty good. Not the greatest game ever but easily worth the $4.99

Co-Pilot NA is only $19.99 right now. Definitely worth looking into if you're in the market for a full-fledged navigation app with TBT and other features.

The new Tom Tom app is really good, I tested it this weekend and it is almost as good as my high end Garmin standalone. I wonder if the free Google GPS will get past the Apple Crypt-keepers.

Yes I have. Where I am though, it does pick back up quickly. Charlotte has good 3G coverage. I do lose signal from time to time though. I will look into the TomTom update. That might be better, but I knew a lot pf people were waiting for a significant update a little while back.

Trivial Pursuit is one of the better pass-n-play games, too.

If you buy a navigation app, do you have to pay a monthly fee, or is it just a one time thing?
