Slacker Radio is my new favorite. Pandora has been removed from my iPhone now. The main advantage it has over Pandora is that it already has preset stations for different music tastes. You can still create your own station just like on Pandora.
I couldn't agree more. Slacker.com blows Pandora out of the water, it's not even close.

The customization of the stations logic when you create your own is great too. As are the pre-made stations that actually list what bands are played on it (as mentioned by CTHP). Highly recommend it.

Just playing around with Slacker- it is prety darn cool.

My one question- how do I get it to play a mix of all my favorite stations?

I know this has been discussed before, but the search isn't working, and new Apps come out every week. My servitude to Verizon expired last week, so I switched to ATT and got an 3G 8gb model. So, veteran iPhoners, what are the most useful, well designed apps I can install on my new phone?

Never mind.
I got it.
Apologies,

Totally agree except for one thing. I loved the ability to specify a number of songs, create custom stations and then do a QuickMix. Right now, I don't see a way on Slacker to create a mix of songs from the Jonas Brothers, Bushwick Bill and Dinosaur Jr. I'd have to keep switching channels.

Still, I left Pandora in the dust. I just wish it had that single function.

Yep that's the reason I stick with Pandora. It needs a Mix

yeah, i don't get the love for the new ones. i can tune into a radio station i like via aol radio or just over the web. i love listening wwoz out of new orleans, for example, or kkjz here in l.a.. but pandora seems to do better in re creating user defined radio. i have a david bryne/davie bowie rock station which is pretty good. and a jazz station based on doc cheatham, brad mehldau, christian scott and...er, someone else, that I really love.

I downloaded Darkroom last night. There's a free app that basically serves to help steady the camera so you don't have blurry photos; then there's one for 99 cents that has additional functionality such as ability to take 'brighter' pictures without flash, adds a timer.

I just downloaded the free version and there's a timer countdown that for a photo and if the camera shifts before the timer expires, it restarts so you're more likely to get a clean photo.

For those outside of Boston, the WEEI Mobile app through flycast is pretty cool. You can listen live, but it also allows you
to filter through all of the different shows and select from past days (with descriptions of who was on and what they talked
about), and has a specific link to the past and present whiner lines. Pretty cool. You just type http://weei.flycast.fm into
your mobile browser on the Iphone and follow the instructions.

Two apps that I am loving.....

First the new MLB app. For $9.99 you get the equivalent of ESPN's Gamecast for the entire season, along with highlight videos. But they have thrown in radio feeds of the games for the same price.....MLB Radio included for $9.99. How could you go wrong?

Second, ooTunes. Like the Flycast app, this is about streaming radio feeds. But for $3.99, you get virtually every radio station that streams along with many internet based feeds. So now, when listening to music, I can pull up Pandora, sort through my library, or tune in WBRU in Providence, or 107.1 The Peak in NY. There are additional features for additional money (access your desktop/iTunes from a remote location for a subscription cost) but I've only wanted the radio feature to date.

Does anyone know when the 3.0 software is coming out? I've heard there will be a subscription model for apps as well, anyone know any details about that?

it's coming out this "summer." I'd guess august. there will basically be an in-app payment system, so you can add onto the app as additions are needed: buy extra levels in-game, buy new city coverage for travel guide from within app when you're in a new city, etc.

Just saw that there's an app called Ports of Call. It's basically an international maritime strategy game from 20 years ago. Last time I played it must have been early 90s - will give it a try for nostalgia's sake.

Does anyone know if there are apps available that link up to ESPN or Yahoo fantasy baseball rosters for stat updates? I can manually input rosters in Sportacular but it's proven to be very tedious...

There is a CBS Sports App if your fantasy team is on CBS- but haven't seen one for any others

what app are you working on? I don't have direct experience, but have heard it's very simple.
Really? I have literally zero coding experience, so I doubt very much that it would be simple for me. It's a sort of social networking platform.

Something called Y! Fan (http://www.yfanapp.com/) has been working well for me so far.

I thought you meant actually submitting once you had a finished app. Yeah, I don't think it's simple unless you know how to code in Cocoa already.

So, I purchased the MLB app. While I love what it is asble to do, I have found two issues. When checking scores etc, the app closes down every time I move from one game to the next. Is that common? How can I fix? If I try to re-install, will I get charged again?
Also, is there anyway to keep the gameday audio running in the background as I do other things i.e check e-mail etc. If I listen to a game, the audio is gone as soon as I try to do anything else. Thanks

Make sure you power your phone down and start it up again. You should do this after any app install. Hope that helps.

also, if you keep having problems, delete from your phone (hold icon until shakes, then hit X"). It will still be in your iTunes, so you can re-install. If for whatever reason, you can re-download from iTunes again and not be charged (it will warn you, and allow you to DL).

No, you can't run in the background unfortunately. Most apps can't (and no 3rd party ones).

That's what she said.
That is the biggest part of software 3.0, allowing apps to run in the background.

I feel there will be a lot of RAM issues though. I have gotten the memory error a few times while using apps, with multiple running, there will be more.

Probably will be optimized for the new phone launching with 3.0. I know already that my EDGE iPhone won't do basically any of the cool stuff in 3.0.

I still have the EDGE iPhone as well. I still love it, and don't need the 3G really, I also carry a BB Bold issued from work.

I have a trick up my sleeve though... I have Apple Care that is active until January. When I can't wait any longer I will call in and tell them about the two warranty covered problems I have with my phone and see if they will swap it out for a 3G model, which I have been told can happen.

3.0 is not supporting background processes, so I don't know that this will fix anything. There will be background push notifications, which will allows apps to push notices while not running, but if the app cannot continue to run in the background, I unfortunately don't think audio can continue to stream.

Question about the new MLB app: Does Gamecast Audio work over a cellular data network, or do you need to be on a wireless network for it to work?

The fact that it won't run in the background is already pushing me away from buying it.

Ok, I think I'm finally about ready to make an iPhone purchase (two actually, one for me, one for my wife). The only thing I'm hesitating about is the June rollout of the new iPhone. Other than adding more space on the HD, I want to make sure they aren't adding anything that will make me regret buying now - I could care less about the slide-out keyboard that has been rumored.

That said, after doing some research in the App Store, this thread, the general iPhone thread, and the Dr. Bluetooth thread (not to mention countless google searches), this is what I'm currently thinking of getting in terms of apps and accessories:

Sheet2
Apps
Name Price MB
1 Bulbous Ventures LLC - Baseball App MLB stats 2009 edition $1.99 26.1
2 MLB at-bat $9.99 0.7
3 USA Today free 1
4 WEEI free
5 Jott - turns voice recording into to-do list free 1.1
6 G-Park $0.99 0.6
7 Sportstastic - can't find it in App Store free
8 AOL Radio for ESPN radio and more free 0.4
9 Google Mobile free 2
10 Skype - can I use this at wifi hotspots around the world for free calls? free 2.7
11 Epocrates - for Pam free 1.6
12 ooTunes - radio stations from basically everywhere $3.99 1.1
13 Shazam - song identifier free 0.6
14 Snow Reports $1.99 1.8
15 EverNote free 1.5
16 The Weather Channel free 5
17 AccuWeather free 2
18 CBS Sports Mobile free 0.4
19 Weird Facts $0.99 0.3
20 Save Benjis $0.99 0.3
21 Flight Track $4.99 0.8
22 Fandango free 0.7
23 Bank of America free 0.2
24 WebMD Mobile free 1.1
25 Around Me free 3.1
26 Amazon Mobile free 0.9
Total: $25.92 56MB
Accessories
1 Zappp Invisible Shield - full body $24.99
2 or Bodyguardz - same material as above, but two for the price of one $20.00
3 Switcheasy Capsule Neo $29.99
4 ThumbTacks microphone $12.99

Anything above (other than the two types of skins) seem overly redundant or useless? If I'm going to throw a couple of movies and 3-4GB of music on this thing, do I need more than the 8GB unit? The apps total only 56MB, but I'm sure there's a lot of space taken by pre-installed items as well.

Thoughts?

I strongly don't believe the fold-out keyboard rumor fwiw, however I think there is a good chance of an improved camera in the next version. If you can wait, I'd be inclined to wait. I think there will also almost certainly be more internal RAM and possibly a faster processor, so the new iPhones may ultimately run everything a bit better/quicker.

who is the most trusted source I should be reading/watching when it comes to iPhone rumors? I can't believe how many bloggers/reviewers/etc there are out there and I know absolutely NOTHING about their track records.

I can wait, but I'm getting amped up about getting one of these the more I read about them :rolling:

well, Daring Fireball is maybe the best source, but it's not really a news/rumor source--but trustworthy reporting and analysis. Mac Rumors is pretty good as well. There's not necessarily a specific go-to "source" on this stuff, but when it comes to the iPhone a lot of it originates from leaked info from Asian manufacturers, etc.

As far as being, amped, yeah it's basically a life changer.

Guys/gals, what about the apps and accessories I'm looking at (post 91 above)? Anything on the list not as good as I'm expecting it to be? Any other "must-have" apps that I'm not aware of? Any other thoughts will be greatly appreciated.

Yes, you can use skype for free wherever there's wifi. It's really cool.

Must add Pandora.

Twitteriffic is a great way to get news on your iPhone. In a way it makes twitter make sense by allowing you to easily scroll thru news feeds.

Flickster is pretty useful for movie times.

Some of the apps you listed are redundant. For example, Flycast is a radio feed app that contains both espn radio and weei, along with many others. I find it to be the best overall live radio feed app by far. I also see some apps that I have tested and found to be somewhat useless. Save Benjis is useless to me, seeing as though amazon mobile will most likely beat (or at least be equal) the same prices you'll find through the program. If you're going to have amazon mobile, I wouldn't bother with save benjis. Also, downlaod the movie showtime app named Now Playing, as it contains live Fandango links for showtime purchases within the app, saving you app space without needing to download fandango as well. I could go on, but I'll just list mine, and maybe others will chime in with some of their others.

Here is my list of apps after testing thoroughly (in no particular order):

1. iRemote
2. The Weather Channel
3. Google Mobile
4. Bank of America
5. Evernote
6. Sportacular (thats the name, and why you might not have found it)
7. MLB.com at Bat 2009
8. Simplify Media (share iTunes libararies with friends remotely)
9. Flycast (best live radio feed)
10. Slacker Radio (better than Pandora IMHO, but it's preference)
11. BeeJiveIM (IM client for all protocols)
12. Twitterific Premium (trhe pro version of twitterific)
13. Twittelator Pro (I like the interface better, but it sometimes doesn't refresh. I'm waiting for an update to give a verdict between them both)
14. Facebook
15. Easy WiFi (an automatic wifi login app for AT&T hotspots)
15. WiFiTrak (finds wifi networks wherever you are, even if hidden)
16. eBay mobile
17. PayPal mobile
18. i.TV (a mobile tv schedule listing app that you can manage your netflix que from)
19. Record (for audio notes you can email yourself)
20. Ocarina (turns your iPhone into a flute - the nephews and nieces love this one)
21. Shazam (tells you the name and artist for a song you don't know by listening to it)
22. Backgrounds (free wallpaper app)
23. Eventful (lists all events in your area that are upcoming and holds live links to ticket purchases)
24. G-Park (find where you parked - though not 100% accurate)
25. Yelp (sort of a yellowbook for everything with reviews- coffee places, restaurants, gas stations, etc.)
26. Amazon mobile
27. Open Table (makes reservations from your iPhone at local restaurants)
28. Local Eats (lists those sometimes secret places that the locals love for any genre of food you ask of it)
29. Upcoming (keeps track of birthdays, anniversaries, etc. for your contacts)
30. Free Memory (if your phone is sluggish, it frees up some RAM to make sure it's over 20MB at any time)
31. Air Sharing (store files remotely - an FTP client)
32. ePocrates RX (awesome wealth of drug info)
33. Ambiance (soothing noises for whenever)
34. All Recipes
35. BigOven (another recipe site, as they're both equally awesome)
36. ColorSplash (make only certain parts of photos appear in their original color - cool photo app)
37. iTranslate (for any language, but pricey)
38. We The People (pocket constitution - just cool to have)
39. StepTrak Lite (keep track of how far you've run/walked as well as caloric burn, etc)
40. Skype for iPhone

~There are a few more, but they're games for fun only, and not necessary. I have also deleted about 40 apps over the last 6 months that sucked IMO. Can't remember all of them, but my current list is one I'm now very happy with.

Lastly, go with the invisible shield imho. The bodyguardz films are similar, and you get two for one, but they aren't as anti-glare as the IS's are. It got on my nerves after a little while, and I switched my bodyguardz out for the full-body Zagg IS.

That's what she said.
I have probably 60 apps on my iPhone, some I haven't used since the day I got them, but keep they there just in case, and others that I use everyday.

I have many pages, but the following is a list of what I would recommend.

First page
1-Instapaper - Awesome!
2-Facebook
3-MLB At Bat 2009
4-Her - Calls my girlfriend with the touch of an app icon.
5-Dad - Calls my dad with a touch of an app icon
6-Wikipanion
7- myFavorites - I have this set up to get to the text message conversations of some of my contacts(GREAT!)
8- A webapp called Springlets which has a quick search link to IMDB.

Second page
1-iPhlix - may be changing to a different netflix manager soon.
2-ESPN
3-Shazam
4-Fanball Fantasy News
5-TwitterFon
6-Twitter Trends
7-ShopShop - Great shopping list app
8-Fandango
9-Y! Fan Pro

Others I recommend
1-MMS
2-MySpace
3-FlyCast
4-Trulia
5-Converter
6-DirectTV
7-Convertor
8-Free RSS
9-You're #1(another speed dial)
10- SuperDial

The ones on my first page are all great, hook them up.
