I'm in on the X. It's exactly what I've wanted. Actual size between 7 and 7+. Viewable screen maxed out. I don't care about the features really. But I think this is a sweet spot for size.

I missed the demo - how do you call up Apple Pay with FaceID? I already find it harder to use Apple Pay than to just pull out my credit card

For someone who doesn't take many pictures and doesn't really play games on the iPhone, is there any reason to buy the iPhone X over the 8?

Edit: In case it's not clear that's a legitimate question, not snark. In the market for a new phone because I smashed my iPhone 6 screen a few weeks ago - leaning towards the iPhone 8 as opposed to X as the extra features don't seem to be particularly worth the $300 difference (although I suppose as more AR apps come to market that could change).

You double tap the side button and then hold the phone up so you can authorize payment with FaceID. I'm surprised that you find the current Apple Pay hard to use. You just touch your phone to the payment terminal and touch the home button. I use it all the time.

The 8 also supports AR

I'd pay the extra monthly just for wireless charging on the X. I may have to look into switching companies because I'm only a year into my contract on two phones.

On your current phone you should be able to just tap the home button twice quickly from the lock screen and it's good to go.

Couple questions for you all. My wife has long been an Android/LG/Samsung user and has long had issues with her phones. Since leaving Blackberry I've had I-Phones and she sees me using my phone without issue and wants to switch.

1. Any possibility that Verizon or Apple will offer specials to get customers to flip to one of the new versions of I-Phones?
2. What's the most storage space for an I-Phone? 160gb?
3. Is there a way to transfer data from an Android phone to an I-phone? Would the store do it or would she need to?

TIA

1. They pretty much all offer some kind of deal to get her out of her contract, but she'll pay the same as anyone.

2. 256MB

3. Yes, depending on what data you want moved over. Certainly contacts, pics etc.

The nice thing about releases is that the previous models generally drop way down in price. She could prob pick up a 7 series for cheap once the 8 is on the shelves.

I actually wish TouchID used the side buttons like FaceID. I always forget to use one of my non-TouchID registered fingers and it takes a little longer to lock the phone, use a knuckle or whatever to get there. It's not bad, but it's not as fluid as it probably can be.

Wireless charging has been around forever. No one, and I mean no one, uses it. Charging pad sales are shockingly low.

Well, that's disappointing. Performance issues? I know there were cases you could buy to use the tech, but it always seemed clunky to me (I like my phone slim, wouldn't use a case at all if it was possible). Built in would be awesome but if it sucks, then I guess there's no point for simply that feature. I'm just tired of cables and ports and dust and all that jazz.

Many Android devices have it built in and people still don't care. It really doesn't solve for anything. The charging pad still needs to be plugged in. You've saved the half a second it takes to attach the wire to you phone. Who cares. Also, charging rate is slower and positioning the phone on the pad, while not the least bit difficult, isn't as simple as tossing it on.

There are much better wireless charging technologies than Qi, but they either cost more or don't have the marketing that Qi has. Qi sucks.

Obviously Apple knows better than me when it comes to marketing but I don't see the point in having the 2 new 8 models at all. Its basically the same design they have been using since iPhone 6 (3 years old) and looking at it next to the S8 and some of the other flagships it looks outdated. Also disappointing that the new camera features are not available on the 4.7". As mentioned above, the X hits the sweet spot on size/screen. I would like to have seen them make the X the base flagship to compete directly with Samsung S8 pricepoint and then introduce a larger ProX version similar to Note that could have some of the features found on iPad Pro (Apple Stylus, multitasking, improved specs, etc).

I'm surprised there isn't more concern about the all glass design. They are marketing it to imply that its necessary for wireless charging but other phones have had wireless charging with all metal designs. All glass basically guarantees a case is necessary. How will that effect charging?

While I'll admit to not knowing the logistics of pad position and charge rate, I'd rather have a pad plugged in full time then have to deal with connection tips and ports getting worn out or balled up with lint from my pocket. And the presumable static position of a pad seems to eliminate the issue of cables wearing out from bending at the plug. I would imagine automakers would (I think they already do right?) start implementing the pads in the center console, which would be great.

I don't doubt you, but it's something I would want to test drive myself. Or it's just an excuse I'm making for a new phone.

I think wireless charging will catch on more now that Apple has introduced it to their product line. Not placing any kind of judgment or anything on that, that's just what's going to happen.

I think in general wireless charging will be pushed more and more in the future: less ports = less points of failure.

Looking for some advice: My iphone 6 seems days away from shitting the bed, so a new one is necessary. Obviously it's nice to have the new shiny model, but the 7 has dropped in price. Will there be a drastic difference between the two performance-wise? I realize that the 8 offers some features that the 7 won't, but how obsolete has the 8 made the 7? I don't want to buy a phone just bc it's $150 cheaper if it's going to quickly become outdated...

How long to you plan on holding on to your phone? Either the 7 or 8 will be fine for the next 2 years, unless you're the kind of person who notices imperceptible speed/processor/camera bumps in quality.

(I am that kind of person)

I look at it this way: I use my phone (as I suspect many of us do) more frequently than any other computing device that I own. I unlock it dozens, if not hundreds, of times a day and am an unabashed gadget fiend. I'm gonna pay that extra $150 to get the best possible device I can considering how I use it. On the other hand, my 62 year old father just got rid of his old 4s (released Oct 2011) less than 6 months ago. It's all in how (and how much) you use it.

AT&T, TMobile, and Verizon have all announced that adding the watch to a line will be $10 per month. AT&T and Verizon are waiving activation fees. Big Red and TMobile are offering first 3 months free. Unlike Tim Cook, I'm not blown away by those offers.

I didn't care before the iPhone 7. I have a damaged 6S, so I've been slumming it on a 5S for a couple months now (waiting on an upgrade), and my one major issue with the loss of the headphone jack this meant I could no longer listen to podcasts at work while charging without a headphone adapter.

Now I still think wireless charging is an inefficient mode of charging compared to a plugged-in cable, mostly designed to save people from the excruciating step of plugging said cable in, but there's actually an everyday scenario in which I'd find some value in it. I'm curious, though, if the technology Apple is using is any more efficient than other products on the market.

I'm rarely in the lock screen in situations where I have to pay - waiting in line at the supermarket, for example, I'm probably checking my phone to pass the time - so to get to my ApplePay wallet, I would have to lock the phone to get into the lock screen just to double-click.

Also, I have "Rest Finger to Open" on, because I love Touch ID and the ability to unlock the phone by just touching the home button. So If I don't double-click quickly enough, I unlock the phone by mistake and then the double-click gets me the app switcher. And yet when I didn't want it, I always seemed to end up popping up the wallet by mistake.

In the end I hated the whole ApplePay tap-twice-from-lock so much from a usability standpoint that I had to disable it.

You're probably right, which annoys me as someone who moves around a lot for work. It's going to be a pain in the butt if they take away the actual charging ports. Instead of carrying a charging cable around, I now have to carry a charging pad around?

There's no need to open Apple Wallet to use Apple Pay. Just rest your finger on the Home button and touch your phone to the payment terminal.

I've been using a very nice wireless charging system with my iPhone 6S for a while now. 3 components:
  1. this case, which is slim, good-looking, grippy, plugs into lightning port (but the connector can swivel out if you need to pop in a lightning cable in a pinch), enables Qi charging and also has magnets mounted inside the back.
  2. this cradle for bedside charging, which props up the phone so you can see it at night (you just kind of drop it in place), charges quickly, and - this is important, because some Qi cradles and pads suck - doesn't constantly stop and re-instantiate charging once the battery is full. A bunch of docks get up near 100% and then your phone will constantly bzz-bzz on and off every few minutes while the phone basically idles at close to full charge. This one doesn't do that.
  3. this vent charger for the car. It supports Qi charging and it's magnetic, so I just pop the phone on there and it holds in place and charges. Just grab and walk away when you're done, nothing to unplug. It's worked well, and I haven't found anything with the same mix of characteristics out there.
I went through a ton of stuff that didn't work well or didn't quite fit my requirements, so I'm happy where I am now. Even with 8/X getting Qi charging, the phones won't be magnetic so my setup won't really work. Maybe there'll be a way to deal with that, but for now I'm holding tight to this system.

It's $300 less for the base model, which is the main reason. They also won't be able to make enough X's. There's also a lot of people who love the iPhone and don't want a drastic shift.

I am going to get an 8. I wouldn't trade in my 6 for a 7 (which i had the option to 8 months ago).

I'm pretty excited for the 8. I don't need a new form factor but a fresh battery, better performance, better camera and better screen are all I really need. I was all in on the X yesterday, but i'm going to pass for this round.

I'd rather have the 8 and a Series 3 Apple Watch for $999 than a $999 iPhone X, which is my plan.

I use wireless charging on my android every night. Just lean it on the dock and it's good to go. Can view the dimmed clock and grab it quickly if I need to check something during the night. Also good when I'm streaming from phone to TV in room.

Use it occasionally during the day as well. Charge isn't quite as fast as plugging in but still pretty fast.

I'd guess Apple will probably be slightly improved since mine is about a year and a half old. I think they've been waiting to get better efficiency.

Blind people can use touch screens just fine. They just aren't using the same interface as you. You can swipe across the screen and get audio/verbal feedback if you are using accessibility features.

Yes, despite Apple pricing its new iPhones as high as $1,149, not a single one of the new iPhones will come with a fast charger as standard. This is because Apple will continue to bundle the Lightning to USB-A charger regardless of model or storage capacity and fast charging will require a more powerful Lightning to USB-C charger.

Needless to say, that don’t come cheap.

Apple currently sells three different Lighting to USB Type-C chargers, the 29W A1540, 61W A1718 and 87W A1719 and they retail for $49, $69 and $79 respectively. Furthermore the chargers all have mixed reviews on Apple’s site. Why? Because none of them come with a cable.

Wait, I can charge my iPhone 6S quicker using my standard iPad charger.
Yes. The iPhone 6 can accept something like 8 watts of power. The standard iPhone charger supplies 5 watts of power. The iPad charger supplies 10.5 watts of power. Electronic devices only accept the power they can handle so no need to worry about the iPad charger being too strong.

Unless you're someone who either always has to have the top-of-the-line iPhone or really wants one of the X features (enhanced front-facing camera, etc.), I really cannot see any reason not to just go with the 8. I ordered an 8 Plus last night. I have no problems with the plus size, I never use the front-facing camera and since the internals are pretty much the same, I really can't justify paying the higher price for the X. If they come out with a plus size edge-to-edge screen next year (and hopefully reduce the size of the top notch), I'll upgrade, but until then, I'm happy to live with Touch ID and bezels.

Yep, put in an order for the (regular) iPhone 8 earlier this morning. The one thing that mildly annoys me is the all-glass design (though I understand the reasons behind that) which means I will probably finally have to bite the bullet and buy a case - I've long resisted, and the iPhone 6 was actually really sturdy even without a case when being dropped I found (I dropped my phone all the time with only with small scratches until my most recent drop where the screen cracked quite a bit).

I just pre-ordered the 8. Time to say goodbye to my 16GB iPhone 6. Question though, especially with an all glass build - when do they usually come out with cases? I'm only seeing otterboxes for iPhone 7's (will that fit the 8?)

Had this same question and my understanding is that the iPhone 7 cases will also fit iPhone 8. If you go on Amazon some of the cases have already been re-labeled as "iPhone 7/8."
