Well, my wife took the phone to the Apple Store. I'm getting a new one. Apparently the Lightning port is shot, but they don't know why. They couldn't even run a diagnostic. Odd that until last night, it would charge intermittently. Then it seemed to quit charging altogether. I was more inclined to think it was a software issue...

My port on my 6s is touch-and-go, too. The car chargers don't work because of the jostling around, and I have to wiggle the power cord in right to make sure there's a charge when I'm at work or at home. About 25 percent of the time, I wake up in the morning to a dead phone or with 15% battery because the power connection was lost when I put the phone down after plugging it in. Counting the days until Sept. 12...hopefully the rumored manufacturing issues aren't so bad that the new ones can still ship this month.

Is anyone else having issues with battery lately? I'm literally having to hard reset my phone every couple days, otherwise it won't take a charge. Will plug in, battery light goes green and it sits there and drops %. I'm assuming it's a software glitch as they usually have a new version when the new model hits, but I don't recall doing any updates recently. Just wondering if I should be planning to move to the 8 and this might be a hardware issue.

I've had other people running 10.3.3 say the same thing. When I have seen these the bugs in the past it usually centers around something using your location 24/7 when it shouldn't be. You can go to settings -> privacy -> location check what apps are using your location. I strip away anything from using location unless it's totally needed (waze). I also make sure virtually nothing has always access to my location.

Also settings -> battery will tell you what apps are chewing up your battery.

I don't have that issue, but my battery has declined noticeably over the last month or so. I'm sure it's a software thing as I have a 7 Plus that isn't even 12 months old yet.

Same issue on my iPhone 6 the past few weeks. It's only happening with Amazon lightning cables for some reason. Never had any issues with them before now.

I had this problem on my 2 year old 6 a couple of months ago right after an iOS update. Charging and battery drained completely in about an hour. Brought it in to the Apple Store and they ran a diagnostic that said my battery was shot - they rate the battery for 500 recharge cycles and mine was about 750 - which seems about right for having for 2 years. Got a new battery and problem solved.

What did they charge for that?

I think it's a combination of my cord and software glitch. Plugging into a different cord on my laptop, it charges fine. My consumption is still above normal, but I'm now leaning towards the cord being shot and software issues compiling.

Your battery will last much longer if you don't charge above 80% and don't let it get below 20%. Doing a full cycle in the way described in the previous article may help the OS give a better estimation on the battery capacity, but it's not actually good for the battery at all and will wear it out quicker.

Your phone's going to die or be obsolete long before that makes a noticeable difference.

I'm not sure I agree with you. Phones last for years now without becoming obsolete. The battery going is usually the reason people replace their phones now since the batteries themselves aren't easily replaceable. Taking care not to overcharge should noticeably extend its life.

The biggest reason I swap phones every couple years is I feel like software updates (likely intentionally, at least by Apple) turn older phones into a slog. Especially with the way contracts are structured now for upgrades, I don't see any reason to stay in a phone for much longer than that. Even if you buy instead of lease, as someone made the point in the 8 thread, when the new ones come out, the resale market is so aggressive you usually can get 60-70% of your value back, especially if you get it unlocked.

I'm not super concerned about my battery, my phone is only a year old and I see it get glitchy and have power issues every time there's a new update coming. I was just curious if I was imagining things, if it was my cord, etc. I don't ever really intend to keep a phone long enough for a 40-80 type regiment to be relevant. It won't be truly 'obsolete' in a technological sense (though software issues arise with processing), but if I can trade it in and get the newest model every two years, it's obsolete in my view. I don't even use my phone for work and I can't imagine trying to stay within the boundaries that article cites. I basically have anxiety set in if I wake up in the morning and it's not at 100%.

I use an iphone 6s which is now coming up on 2 years old and it still works perfectly fine with no issues at all. I honestly see the battery failing before the phone itself is obsolete. But everyone's experience and usage is clearly pretty different. It seems odd to me that you would have those issues with only a year old phone.

It could certainly be a hardware issue, but generally every time a new phone or update is coming ive noticed something, be it battery problems or glitches. Charging it I think now was certainly the cable, usage I think is software but it's easy enough to find out when they inevitably update after release of the 8. I've been thinking about switching from AT&T to save some $ anyway so if it's hardware I'll use it as an excuse to swap us to sprint and take advantage of their promotions for early cancellation reimbursement.

Sprint also has a promo for free unlimited service for a year (you pay taxes which comes to about $4/month) if you switch to them which seems like a pretty good deal. Not sure if that can be combined with the cancellation reimbursement promo but could be worth looking into.
