One annoyance is the availability of the MagSafe charger. Apple store showing delivery the first week of November. At least my clear case arrives tomorrow in time for the new phone.

Got the Max Pro in today. Love it so far. Beautiful phone (Pacific Blue)

Stupid question I’m sure, but can I plug the lightning cable into my MacBook Pro charger or is that too strong for the phone?

No. It’s fine. I backup my phone to my MacBook Pro and use a usb c to lightning.

My Pro Max arrived last night. I’ve never upgraded to a new iPhone since I was always an Android guy. I was pleasantly surprised by how seamless it was. Took maybe fifteen minutes from the time I opened the box to having it fully set up. I like this design a lot better than the 11 Pro Max that has the rounded edges. This feels more durable and secure in my hand. I did get a clear case because I have young kids but it felt really solid without it and I wouldn’t be nervous carrying it naked in most situations. Now to wait for the MagSafe charger.

The pacific blue is a really pleasant change after nothing but black and gray.

Agreed 100%. Switching from Galaxy to this phone was a breeze.

I am on the IUP so I went from an 11 Max to the 12 max and the biggest change for me is getting a phone with 6GB of ram. I can easily see the speed improvements over the 11 max.

I'm 6'0" 145lbs and it works well for me.
Thanks. Now to figure out a color. I had no idea there were so many options!

Do you find it useful and worth the cost/extra $10 month (assuming Verizon)?

I'm rarely out without my phone so for me it's not worth the extra expense for the cellular version of the watch plus the $10/month. YMMV.

That was my thought as well, though it appears the stainless steel versions are cellular only

Generally speaking, do you (or anyone else who has an Apple Watch and might read this) find the watch to be useful outside fitness/health tracking capabilities? I've been pondering getting one, but it seems like it excels at fitness tracking, which I don't need. I do like the idea of not missing notifications, and the haptic feedback for on-foot navigation would have been great when I was able to travel. I cannot see myself ever sending a text or something from a 44mm screen. I'm definitely not going to speak into it like I'm Dick Tracy. It's also yet another thing I would need to keep charged.

I really wish they made one that was round. The square shape is definitely part of my hang-up with the whole thing.

Coming from a 7, this 12 mini feels like a damn hot rod. Loving it so far- huge upgrade, bigger screen and an even smaller phone. Perfection!

My job gives me a Fitbit inspire to wear and they pay me for getting x steps. I get all my notifications (texts, emails, caller ID) to that and it works wonderfully. Can’t respond, but I on ow what the notification is. Like you I have little need for fitness tracking so I couldn’t justify the watch, as beautiful as it is.

I’ll also add for anyone with a Roku, AirPlay works seamlessly for HBO Max and I’ve been watching with no issues.

Yeah was debating the FitBit Sense. I don’t need the cellular service Apple Watch for sure and mainly I’ve always worn a FitBit for the fitness tracking. Just not sure saving $100 is a better option than getting the Series 6.

Sort of related... has anyone updated to iOS 14 yet? It's been a month. Are we past the initial buggy release window or is it worth sticking with 13.whatever for now?
So I ran the 14.1 update on my 7 almost 3 weeks ago, and it has been a complete disaster for my battery life. I had put in a new battery about a year ago, and it was performing fine until I(in hindsight, stupidly) ran the update. The phone is also now running hot. I have no desire to shell out for a new phone yet, as the 7 provides all the bells and whistles I need. Is there any fix for this? There is no mention in the 14.2 update about one, so I'm not running that just yet. Are these criminals up to their old shenanigans, blowing out old phones to force the purchase of a new one? My contempt for Apple is growing by the day.

14.2 includes fixes for three different 0-days with in-the-wild exploits. Most enterprise customers are mandating a push to 14.2 (over 14.1) to remain a policy-compliant endpoint device.

I have no idea about the battery life conspiracy issue - it's quite possible that the new OS does run hotter though, which will degrade your battery life (or just straight up has worse power consumption - a lot of security fixes end up that way, annoyingly).

How good is Non-Verizon service in the Boston (Dorchester, to be specific) area? We have Verizon and it is less than ideal service. Apparently our closest cell phone tower is inside a Churches bell tower and to upgrade it is risky because any damage to the school's property will be billed to Verizon. They haven't upgraded it in years. It is not unbearable, but there are the occasional dropped calls and at certain times there is no service from our back deck. With Black Friday coming up, we are looking to other providers (T-Mobile and AT&T). Cross posting this in the Android thread...Wife will be going with the iPhone, I like Androids. Any help is appreciated.

Bump.

I currently have an X. My contract ends in 6 days and I am eligible for an upgrade through work.

Work will pay for up to $250 of the cost.

My options are:

11 Pro for $249.99
12 for $199.99
12 Mini for $99.99
12 Pro for $399.99
12 Pro Max for $499.99

I'm not getting the mini. So basically I can get the 11 Pro or the 12 for $0 out of pocket, or I can get the 12 Pro or 12 Pro Max for $150 / $250 out of pocket, respectively.

Thoughts on the 11 pro vs. 12? I don't use my phone a crap ton. I take pictures but not nearly as many as my wife. I am leaning the 12 since it is newer but I could be convinced the 11 Pro is a better option. Should I be considering the 12 Pro or the 12 Pro Max for any reasons? I don't see a need to pay anything out of pocket but again could be convinced otherwise.

The final option would be to wait it out for a bit until the 13 drops. I have no issues with my current phone, so I could be convinced this is the best option as well. Guessing the 13 will hit the market this fall?

Edited to add: I am upgrade eligible every 2 years, so if I pull the trigger now then I'll be able to get a new one in spring 2023

If you can hold until October amd not have any negative issues (battery life, etc) I’d just wait. The 13 will be out and that means the 12s will be cheaper so even if you don’t need it you’d save money. That’s six months though, so ymmv. I’d wait I think, esp if you don’t take many photos that you use in other places.

Thanks, I have no real issues as of right now. Battery life isn't stellar but it's not horrible either. That said, based on past experience, when the 13 comes out I am guessing the regular version will be listed at ~$400 through work, so I'll have to pay ~$150 out of pocket or whatever if I want it, and not sure I want to go down that path.

Were I you, I'd either go 12 or 12 Pro (or Pro Max if you like that size). By 2023, 5G may be viable depending upon where you live. I have a 12 (non-pro) and have never turned on the 5G which doesn't exist in CT, but I think that might be a reason to get it over the 11 Pro if you're looking forward a bit since the 11s don't have a 5G modem.

The 12 Pro models have LIDAR and some additional photo functionality over the base 12. If you print photos from your phone, being able to handle the RAW files might be good for editing, etc. I am a terrible photographer, and would never use those functions, so the regular 12 works for me.

The 13 will likely have a higher refresh rate screen, better battery, may have a fingerprint reader, and some other marginal improvements (as well as the newest chip, I think the A15). You probably won't be able to get one until November or so, though.

Thanks. I'm leaning with just going for the 12 right now, because I am guessing when the 13 drops, my company will price it above $249.99 and I'll still have to pay out of pocket, which makes no sense to me.

I went from an 8 plus to the 12 Pro recently. I was between the 12 Pro and Max and regret not going for the Max. Love the phone--took a couple of days to get used the lack of a home button, but otherwise the transition was super smooth. My concern with the Max was that it was going to be too big compared to the 8 plus, but I think I got that wrong. I'll try and work a trade-in for Mrs. Zoso's phone, give her the 12 Pro, and get the Max for me.

Depending on when you bought it, Apple (and Verizon and AT&T) has a 14-day return policy.

Link.
Thanks, I'm frankly too lazy to go through a return and repurchase. More likely to do a trade in of her 8 for the 12 Max, then switch the sim cards/user accounts/profiles. I think that should work, but if you're aware of any reason why it wouldn't please let me know!

Kind of a dumb question iPhone 12 question here. My wife and I are Sprint customers. With Sprint becoming TMobile, we were sent new SIM cards. I swapped mine out easily, no issue took about 30 seconds. Figured I'd change my wife's as well. Couldn't get the new SIM card to fit in the holder. I think it the perforated edge on the card is to blame, but I also don't want to fuck with it too much or jam it in and cause other issues. So instead of messing with it in the middle of the day I decided to put the old one back in and deal with it later. The old one fit right back in, but her phone isn't reading it. She can't make a phone call, everything fails.

Any ideas on how to resolve this? I tried restarting the phone, taking the card out and putting it back in, etc. No dice. She made an appointment to go to a TMobile store this evening to have them straighten it out but if there's anything I can do to avoid that hassle, I'd appreciate any guidance.

I would shave off the perforated edge on the new card so it fits better. Compare it to the working SIM card you have.
You should also try putting your working SIM card into your wife's phone to confirm that there's not a problem with her SIM slot.

Verizon just sent me a text. I could turn in my XR for a Mini with a 2 year contract for no cost.

I plan on staying with Verizon and my XR battery is starting to get short. Would it be worth it to switch?

I can't help with your question, but I am amazed at how fast my XR battery went to shit. It started about a month ago, and now it barely gets through the day with light usage. I bought this phone in Dec 2018, so it took about 28 months.

What does your battery health show?
I don't trust the battery health reports. I have encountered a handful of phones (from 6S to XS) that have battery health reports in the mid 90s and yet they drain almost completely by the end of the day (or earlier) with only light usage (and I have thoroughly examined them for the usual app culprits, zombie GPS usage, email push, etc.)

That's actually the reason I was asking.

My wife and I are thinking about upgrading to these, I have a 8 plus and she has I think a 6. She doesn't like facial recognition because she still plans to wear a mask sometimes, there is no alternative, right? All of the 12s unlock via facial recognition, no choice? What did people do when you were out with masks during the pandemic? Thanks...

I have an 11 and Apple has you set up a passcode even if you use facial recognition, so if it can’t read your face it just defaults to the code. I assume it is the same for the 12.

Yes, it is the same. If you're masked, it will show as unrecognized and then you have the option of entering your code.

If you or your wife have an Apple Watch, you can also unlock using the watch when a mask is detected. It’s automatic and seamless, similar to unlocking a Mac with the watch. But if you don’t have a watch, passcodes still work.

I have a recently apple.com-bought Apple 12 and I’m not using facial recognition. Did have to use 6 digit pw (have mine set at 15 minutes but you can change that)
Facial Recognition was an option but I didn’t choose it

(I don’t have an Apple Watch if that matters)
