Anker makes a bunch of charging blocks. They definitely have multi-iQ ones. I’ve got both of these which look to fit the bill:

Ah this lead me to the updated version of your 2nd link: View: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07PWC32ZD/?coliid=I2I29VQRYT8F8X&colid=2WIV9Z4ERM2IC&psc=1&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it

This should work, although I’m tempted to buy a bunch of USB-C to lightning cables just to be uniform even if the iPads wouldn’t benefit at all.

Obligatory "its ridiculous that Apple continues to stick with the lighting connector that has no advantage over USB-C" comment.

I'm an iOS newbie, so I'm just going to ask a bunch of questions in various forums until I don't hate it anymore.

I know the app is dead/long live the app, but how do people read SoSH? On android, I had a homescreen shortcut to the Federal Politics subforum, then I would hit new posts. I was able to do something similar with Safari, but there's an issue. When I enter a thread, the back button at the bottom of the screen is inactive. The only way to go back is to hit the arrow in the upper left corner, which is not ideal for one handed surfing. If I then go from my shortcut URL to New Posts, I'm fine. Any suggestions?

That's odd. I use safari on my phone and the back button works fine after having clicked on a thread. I use 2 bookmarks, one for view new posts and one for V&N. Never really ran into a problem with it from a browsing perspective.

It's because if you save a page to your home screen, it doesn't actually open in Safari so anytime you click on a link it opens a new browser window. Once in that new window you have no "back" button because there's no Safari history.

I use Google Chrome on my iPhone 8 to access SOSH, no issues at all.

No, I get that, but this is the issue. I click on my shortcut, and it takes me here:

But then I click into a thread, and the back button at the bottom is grayed out. You would think that there's history in that I'm returning to the initial page? The only way to go back is to hit the "Untitled" in the upper left, just under the time.

What you posted is what I said - the first screen isn’t safari technically. The second is a new Safari tab, so no history is there.

Do you have a direct launch to a page you want to go to, or just open chrome, then a bookmark for SoSH?
I just use Chrome for SOSH, nothing else, so it's there when I open. I just refresh. Same with my iPad.

I wouldn’t like this for one reason only. Headphones. I still use Apple’s ear buds while I’m listening to podcasts at work. I have Bluetooth headphones for when I go to the gym, but I don’t want to have to own two pairs of wireless headphones and keep them charged, or have to transport headphones.

Also car charging and connecting to older non-bluetooth enabled cars.

The port has been the first thing to go on a few of my phones, so I’m open to this change if they can figure out how to execute wireless charging without fucking up my user experience (which includes the ability to use a case that holds my driver’s license and a credit card).

By the way, I thought that the port had gone out on my phone, but it just had a lot of lint in it. I used a toothpick to clean it out, and now it works again.

Last time the port crapped out, I brought my phone to the Apple Store and they vacuumed the dirt out of the port. Did the trick. But the time before, the port was legitimately fucked and uneconomical to fix, so it is in some cases a failure point.

Be careful/gentle - I messed up the lightning port on a previous phone doing this. I think I bent or deflected one of the pins.

I love my case that holds 3 cards. I haven’t carried a wallet in about 4 years because of it. Sucks they don’t work with Qi.

Im against removing it completely due to the car unless they have some better system than Qi I’m in the car constantly, often 5-6 hours a day and need to charge my phone. Also many cars don’t have wireless CarPlay. Putting a phone on a Qi pad isn’t viable.

I think the real news here (assuming the report is accurate) is that Apple anticipates major advances in wireless charging in the next couple years. Apple isn’t afraid to make consumers buy new accessories (as evidenced by the switch to Lightning and the elimination of the headphone jack), but demanding that consumers change their behavior to continue using their flagship product is a different matter. I can’t imagine they’ll go there until solutions exist for the challenges you’ve identified, except maybe the issue of compatibility with older car stereos (which seems to fit in the “upgrade your accessories” bucket).

I’ll stay on hold until I see how I’m supposed to charge on the go. That is a major dealbreaker for me.

My wife's new (2018) Honda Odyssey has a Qi charging spot right in the center console. No support for wireless CarPlay though.
Yah but you can not hold your phone and charge it, and that charging spot might not be convenient for your location in the car/house/etc.

Something needs to change in the charging game for me to be willing to not have a charging port on the phone.

Yeah, a wireless charger in my pocket/jacket/bag isn’t really going to work. And that’s a high use case for me. It won’t be that hard for me to switch to a Pixel if that happens.

The only way they can feasibly drop a hardwired charging port is if wireless long-distance charging (like NFC, but longer fields) is widely available.

It's not. I don't see how they can drop the charging port. It'll be USC C, not lightning, I'm sure though.

I doubt that it'll be USB-C. Apple likes the lock-in of their own connector, and the control they have over the "standard" such as it is, and then they make (made? in 2015 this was true so could be less now) $4 per connector in MFi fees which isn't chump change.

They've moved to USB C for their Macbooks and iPads though.

Europe's making noises again about a mandated common charger (which would be USB C) for all new phones, too, so they may be planning around that being the case.

I think (?) that is because USB-C with PD can do much higher power delivery (20V @ 5A for USB-C PD, vs Lightning which I think caps out 5V @ 2A, but I know there is some weirdness with USB-C to Lightning cables that might go higher) which is good for charging up big batteries as you would have in a laptop/iPad Pro. On the Macbooks I'm sure they are also happy to eliminate USB-A completely for connector thickness reasons. I have definitely heard people complain about not having the magsafe connectors anymore though.

It will be telling to see if the next non-pro iPads use USB-C, if that's the case then probably they will give up lightning.

One should not underestimate the NIH factor within Apple engineering, which is one of the other reasons they love their proprietary connectors so much. But if the Euro regulators push them maybe that will win out.

I’ll throw this out there because I love it, despite the price: https://masoncases.com/products/super-thin-iphone-x-case-m5-aramid

Its a perfect mix of durability and thinness.
So I got one of these for my iPhone 11. I was a galaxy active true believer, but they stopped making them with the s8 (rumors of an enterprise version based on the s9 are out there, but it's now a 2 year old phone and still exclusive to AT&T which I was happy to abandon). My clumsy ass still was able to crack the screen and I replaced it with an $18 spigen that has a lip that will protect the edge.
If anyone here would like an $85, 3 week old case that feels like riding bareback and isn’t a complete klutz, let me know and I’ll drop it in the mail.

The lightning iPAd charger does 12.1 at 2amps but your overall point I agree with.
https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MU7T2LL/A/18w-usb-c-power-adapter

FYI, I think that one is 12W or 12.1W (so ~2.4A @ 5V), the thing I am wondering about is this 18W USB-C brick with a USB-C to lightning cable, which would suggest you could get 3.6A @ 5V through lightning, but there might be some lower limit, over 2.4A but less than 3.6A.

I can't find any good technical analysis of the amperage, but this review does seem to indicate my suspicions are true - the functional cap is somewhere between the capability of the 12W and 18W adapters (and that a 29W adapter adds nothing).
