I have a free update for this OS but haven't upgraded.

Pros/Cons/Thoughts on this system?

This is just a personal Mac that I use at home, if that helps. Currently run OS X 10.8.5

There's no reason not to update if it's offered. (Security fixes won't be offered for Mountain Lion forever.)

Seconded. Few weird regressions, some very nice improvements.

Unless you really like the fake leather stuff in apps, I see no reason not to upgrade. They ditched some of that stuff.

Just got it at work and it seems fine. If you run expensive operations and your hardware can't handle it expect it to slow down a ton.

Some games or programs (Civ V comes to mind) always slowed down for me on my '08 Macbook when I was on Snow Leopard, but it sped up noticeably after upgrading to Mavericks. Your mileage may vary with other programs, but it let me put off a computer upgrade for the time being.

If you're on 10.8, then I concur with the "no reason not to" crowd.

I will say, that I was running 10.6 at work until recently, went to 10.9 and had A) some hidden memory leaks which took me a while to track down and B) issues with Rosetta support (which, admittedly, had been gone for a while (since 10.8?)).

I think it's still a touch slower than 10.6 but all of my Macs are 2010 or older so it could be a hardware thing.

Really like the Tabbed Finder windows feature. No idea why it took so long to do this. Otherwise, feels about the same as any other recent Mac OS.

Yeah, tabbed finder is great. So is the continuously scrolling Calendar. Haven't used Maps very much as it's been a bit buggy (e.g., grey screens) on my Air.

Much more obvious no-brainer since 10.9.1 came around, at least speaking as a multi-screen user. The ability to full-screen independently on each monitor is big for me. None of the other changes are that big a deal on my end, I really use approx zero of the built in stuff anyway.

Oh yeah, I forgot how much nicer the multi-monitor stuff is. If you use OSX that way Mavericks is a must.

I still miss my 2D grid of spaces though, but that's tweaky nerd complaining.

Yeah, I have a macbook pro from 2008.  It's a 5,1 and the specs exceed the minimum requirements by a little bit, but I made the decision to not upgrade from 10.8.6 after reading about some of the issues people with older macs have been reporting.  As is, I can barely run the programs I need to run well enough to be effective when editing something in Final Cut.  If my performance drops even a little, I worry that I'll lose the ability to keep using the machine for what I bought it for.
