An immense tragedy has happened in the hockey world. The Humboldt Broncos ( Sask) Junior A team bus travelling to a playoff game was struck by a transport trailer causing 14 deaths and 14 seriously injured. The were 28 on the bus including the driver. Thoughts and prayers go out to all the families and friends involved in this horrific accident.

Reading about this a little earlier. So sad.

These things happen to sports teams every once and a while and it always seems to add a bit to the tragedy.

There were players from 5 different Canadian provinces and 4 different States on the team. A tragedy affecting both our countries. One of the players' fathers posted this photo of his son and two teammates recovering in hospital.

Only one fatality identified so far, the head coach's death was revealed my his sister via twitter.
Head coach Darcy Haugan of Peace River died. The father of one of the surviving players was interviewed on CBC TV, his son suffered a broken back and at present has no feelings from the waist down.

Globe and Mail with an article too.

A few of you know I'm from Saskatchewan. Our local team, the Estevan Bruins were waiting for the outcome of the Humboldt vs. Nipawan series to play the winner in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League final.

Our town is also currently hosting an annaul 40 team rec tournament and the goalie for our team is also an assistant coach with the Estevan Bruins. A lot of the players in this tournament are former SJHL players. The Humboldt coach that passed, Darcy Haugen, is a former player for the Estevan Bruins and his former billet family said he was one of many former players they kept in regular contact with.

Normally these nights during the tournament are about having fun and catching up with friends. Last night had a hugely different feel. This is going to take a long time for Humboldt and the league to recover from.

Shitty day

The Prime Minister’s statement:

“An entire country is in shock and mourning today as we learn more about the tragic bus crash involving the Humboldt Broncos that claimed the lives of 14 people, and injured many more.

“We are heartbroken knowing many of those we lost had their entire lives in front of them. We grieve with those facing news no parent or family should ever have to face. And our hearts go out to the community that has lost teammates, coaches, friends, and mentors.

“This is every parent’s worst nightmare. No one should ever have to see their child leave to play the sport they love and never come back.

“Our national hockey family is a close one, with roots in almost every town – small and big – across Canada. Humboldt is no exception, and today the country and the entire hockey community stands with you.

“I thank the first responders – the RCMP, the Provincial Response Team, and medical personnel – who worked tirelessly through the night, and continue to respond to this incredibly difficult situation with courage and professionalism.

“To the entire Humboldt community: We are here for you. As neighbours, as friends, and as Canadians, we grieve alongside you.”

This is the slightly cynical part of me talking, and I'm absolutely willing to be proven wrong with evidence.

When I see GoFundMe (and other similar services) spawn up within 24 hours of a tragedy, I'm always worried that instead of being an actual benefit to the people named, that most or all of the donated funds will instead be squandered, fraudulently obtained, or inefficiently used. I'm not opposed to croudfunding relief efforts, but I'm just worried about the effectiveness and accountability of the current solution. I want to be able to contribute to the recovery (an intentionally generic term) of these human beings, their team, their families, and their communities, but I also want to ensure that what I do donate is used to make as much of a difference as it can.

I like Charity Navigator when it comes to nonprofit foundations to help with that kind of accountability. Is there a similar things for GoFundMe campaigns?

Between here and everywhere.
For anyone who wants to help contribute - but may be a bit wary of the GoFundMe (understandable), Violent Gentlemen Brand Clothing is selling both a T-Shirt and Hoodie with 100% of the proceeds going to the families.

For those of you who don’t know VG - it’s a clothing/apparel line started by a dude and a couple former pros (notably George Parros) and does some pretty cool stuff.

They’re a bit on the pricier side, but I have already have some of their stuff and it’s incredibly high quality.

Here’s the link to the hoodie - if you’re interested.

There were moments of silence for Humboldt at all NHL rinks tonight but the brief ceremony in Winnipeg was different and special. In a demonstration of unity and support the players stood around the centre circle for the moment of silence and the National Anthems.

The hockey community rallies around their own like no other. This is just heartbreaking. Partner was by the office today where the Junior rangers out of Tewksbury plays and they were all at center ice on one knee doing a team prayer. I'm not a religious man, but he was telling me about that and man it got dusty. Definitely grabbing a few of those hoodies from VG. We're trying to figure out how we can help/contribute.

So true locknload, regardless of nationality or favourite team when there is a an event like this the hockey world is one. I remember when the young woman, Denna Laing, who played on the Boston Women's Pro team suffered a devastating injury, the hockey world came together in support of her.

One of those killed, Tyler Bieber who is an on-air personality and announcer for the hockey team, was a huge Patriots fan who visited Gillette for the first time this fall

As bad as the first photo of the bus was, this one is simply unbelievable. The bus was literally torn apart, split in half right down the middle. It is remarkable anyone survived.

Amazing to see 2.6M already raised on the Gofundme page though I'm sure it is very little solace to those impacted.
Just a terrible, terrible tragedy.

Looks like the scene from a Michael Bay movie. I didn't even know you could split a bus like that.
Amazing people survived.

Not true, but likely conflated with the billet family that had three players perish

Looks like the semi ran the stop sign. Bus was on the main road, Highway 35, going north. Semi was heading west on Highway 335.

There is an aerial video showing the intersection of the accident
