If not Revis, then who?

If we lose out on the sweepstakes, the Patriots will have some extra cap room. What would be the best way to use it?

Personally, I'd offer Harvin a 1 year make-good contract with incentives, sign Helu for 2-3 years, maybe bring back Wilfork on short money for another year, and try to win back Browner's broken heart.

I mean, I love me some Darrelle too, but if signing him to an enormous contract is going to create problems extending Collins/Hightower/Jones etc. down the road, then shouldn't we be thinking about all the options?

Bad news: we just lost both our corners.

Good news: we suddenly have money to spend.

What about Suh? He is yet to be signed by Dolphins. He will command more money, but worth the risk? Totally throwing things out there.

Uh, I'd think not. If the Patriots balked at 40 million guaranteed, I doubt they'd be game for over 60 million guaranteed for a defensive tackle.

It's not complicated.

-I'm not sure Browner will cost a whole lot, at least vs. the cap this year. He's older than Revis and has multiple PED violations in his history. If he indeed liked it here, I think he comes back at around what his cap hit was, say $5m. I'd look for some bargains on the market but I'd be fairly happy with Arrington covering the slot or quick matchups and then mixing and matching Browner, Dennard, Ryan and Butler on other receivers. If Dennard returns to form or Butler steps up that's not bad.

-I like Harvin a lot so if the price is right and you think you can handle his personality I think the reward is worth it as long as he's relatively cuttable. Helps your return game immensely and then Edelman can stop running the fly sweeps for ~6 yards and instead Harvin can break some big ones.

-Add a pass-catching back; Helu seems like a good target.

-I'd love to improve the pass rush but I don't know how.

Those would be my main goals at this point. They have space to work with and can make some more if needed.

Helu signed with Oakland for 2 years and 4 million.

If you get Harvin it lessens the need for a true third-down back. When Hernandez was here, the Pats often used a 2 TE / 3 WR group in passing situations. If the other team really sold out to stop the pass, they could hand the ball to Hernandez. Harvin gives even more of that element; he has 140 career rushing attempts.

I have a sinking feeling that Harvin is the Patriots' Julio Lugo.

Sheard. Havin if you can get him on a "show me" deal. Veteran CB (Culliver seems fine). Some other depth signings (Helu would be nice). Draft the trenches. Go to war.

Is there a trade that can bring both McCourty twins to the Pats?

I actually really like this idea.  Jason is only signed through 2018 for reasonable $$ and TN is not going to be competitive before the last year of that contract at best.  TN can eat any cap acceleration on a trade and we have the young assets to send back to TN or draft picks.

Jason was pretty vocal in January that he wants to play in the playoffs at some point.

Here
Any chance they move McCourty back to corner and let him wander a bit like Samuel? McCourty got burned when they made him turn his back to the ball and took away his biggest strength (vision), but maybe they could scheme a bit differently this year. Probably crazy, but just throwing an idea out there.

Which young assets would you give up? Harmon, Ryan, Dennard yes. Maybe all three. Hell, you can take Dobson too. I'd balk on Butler, but maybe that's my homerism speaking for me.

Cromartie called Brady an a-hole in print.  I can't see that transaction happening.

I fear Keyed is right. They're going to go back to the zone defenses we saw pre-Talib. There isn't a #1 corner to be had unless the Broncos want out of that deal or something else crazy and unlikely. In BB I trust and all that but I'm really sad for the 2015 Patriots pass D and ultimately their chances in the playoffs.

Bill clearly needs to improve the pass rush if he can't improve the secondary. Maybe this also paves a way for VW to return.

Edit: by playoff chances I meant chances in the playoffs. Not making them. My bad.

Fixed.

The only way Browner is coming back to the Patriots is if they offer the most money.  He's got two rings and but he hasnt had a real payday contract.  He's made less than $5M total in NFL earnings and this is probably his last chance to make a real contract splash.

deep inside Guido territory
The hyperbole is a bit much around here tonight. let's take a deep breath. This team just won it all a month ago. The offense is still elite, Bill Belichick is still the coach, and there is a lot of moves to be made on defense before September 10th.

Who is this directed at? Me?

In BB I trust. Their long-term future is secure. So happy they won. This is the NFL. Still have TB12. Yadda yadda.

But if you don't think their Super Bowl chances for this upcoming year took a hit you're kidding yourself. That's a little sad.
